Because one desires to inquire about the Prajnaparamita Sutra, etc., and because one does not believe in the Prajnaparamita Sutra, possessing the nature of unwholesome dharmas, one does not desire to inquire about the Prajnaparamita Sutra, etc.; and because one gives wealth to others, and because one is stingy with it oneself; and because one desires to give Dharma robes, etc., to the speaker, but the speaker does not accept them; and because one understands when the beginning of the Dharma is spoken, but does not accept detailed statements, and because one understands when detailed explanations are given, and accepts detailed statements; and because one knows the Dharma of the twelve categories of scriptures, such as the Sutras, and because one does not know these; and because one possesses the six perfections, such as generosity, and desires to learn these, and because one does not possess these, being the opposite of this, due to these gatherings, one falls away from Dharma practice. This is the third set of ten. The listener is first, and the speaker is later, combining as before. Being skilled in the means of the Paramitas, and taking skill in means as important, and being skilled in what is not means, being the opposite of this; and obtaining the dharani of not forgetting the meaning of words; and not obtaining these; and desiring everything from writing the Prajnaparamita Sutra to proper attention, and not desiring these; and being separated from the five obscurations of anger, sleepiness, agitation, regret, and doubt, represented by desire, and not being separated from these five. The second part is related to the previous speaker. Because one greatly enjoys being alone, that is, in a quiet place, and enjoys the bustle of retinues; and because the listener wants to follow the speaker, but the speaker does not give the opportunity, and the listener wants to follow behind; and because one wants to teach the Dharma for a small amount of wealth, and does not want to give these; and because one wants to go to a place that will become an obstacle to life; and not wanting to go there. The above eight, plus the two that will be spoken about, relying only on oneself, are the fourth set of ten. Wanting to go to a place where there is famine, etc., and not wanting to go; and wanting to go to a place harassed by robbers, etc., and not wanting to go there; and because the speaker mainly visits the homes of friends, etc., therefore the listener is unhappy. Such a gathering falls away from Dharma practice because both teacher and student first think that if their own wishes mainly agree with the other's wishes, then Dharma practice can be done, otherwise it should not be done, because disagreement will become a fault, that is how it is.

Otherwise, both the master and the disciple, whether old or young, would commit very serious mistakes. Applying "the former" to the listener and "the former" to the speaker is also merely symbolic; if reversed, it would also become a mistake. Second, relying solely on oneself: if one speaks of the suffering of the three lower realms, such as hunger, then for the sake of others, one will not like or be averse to entering the lower realms; if one praises the gods and mere peace, one will be satisfied with one's own benefit of entering the higher realms and realizing stream-entry, etc. These are the two cases of relying solely on the practitioner himself. Second, the antidote that eliminates obstacles: just as a precious jewel has many enemies, the practitioner also has many obstacles, but the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas of the ten directions constantly attend to and protect them, so that the practice will not decline. Just as when a mother with many children becomes ill, all the children will take care of her. The Compendium also says: "With four causes, the Bodhisattva, endowed with wisdom and power, is difficult to overcome by the four Maras and cannot be shaken, abiding in emptiness, and not abandoning the benefit of sentient beings, acting as spoken, and having the blessings of the Sugata." Third, the characteristics of what is to be known have four aspects: the distinction between name and referent, the necessity of knowing the characteristic beforehand, indicating its boundaries, and the meaning derived from the characteristic. First, the distinction between name and referent has two aspects: general distinction and particular indication. First, general distinction: In general, there are many different statements about characteristics, but here it is said that "the characteristic of knowing, differentiating, doing, and essence." From "knowing" to "essence," if each is considered separately, then they will also become their own nature and characteristic, but here, these four must be explained as the characteristic of combination, so relative to this, the last characteristic is nature, while the particular almost always has other meanings, and the knower and the doer symbolize the cause through the result, just as a crow symbolizes a mansion, it is merely known through it. The great chariots of Tibet also consider this to be the meaning of the result symbolizing the cause, which is the view of the root and commentary. Some great translators distinguish the basis of the name from the referent.
