Those of the lineage are to be understood in this way. The reason for establishing these as the path of transcendence is that, although the Abhidharma followers believe that there is no uncontaminated [wisdom] at the peak of existence, the Mahayana believes that there is. Therefore, the uncontaminated aspects of the eight meditative absorptions are established as the nature of the path of transcendence, and thus they are established there. Cessation is necessarily attained through the path of transcendence. Here, there are seven aspects to defining cessation: by whom, relying on what mind, with what attention, what object is ceased, the nature, the time, and in which realm one enters into equipoise. First, by whom is equipoise entered? According to the Hinayana, the Compendium says, "For this, the learner, the non-returner, who realizes it with the body, and the non-learner, both of whom are liberated from their respective parts, also enter into equipoise." This is how it is. The Mahayana, however, can enter into equipoise from the path of seeing. Ordinary beings, stream-enterers, and once-returners who are liberated from their respective parts of wisdom cannot enter into equipoise, because entering into this requires abandoning afflicted mind and attaining the mind of the peak of existence. For the former, there is no first, and for the latter, there is no last. In the Ten Bhumi Sutra, it is said that Bodhisattvas from the sixth bhumi and above enter into cessation. This is because they consider cessation to be in the sphere free from all elaboration, so the names are the same, but the meanings are different. Second, relying on what mind? The Abhidharma followers believe that the mind of the peak of existence is very subtle, and relying on it makes it easy to cease the movement of mind and mental factors, so they rely on it. However, the Mother Sutra says to rely on the ninth bhumi, so the former must be considered to be at the time of the first practice. Third, what is the attention? Because seeing that the gross movement of feelings, thoughts, etc., is not peaceful, it is through attention preceded by the consciousness of abiding in peace. Bodhisattvas are for the sake of combining the power of samadhi for the benefit of others. Fourth, what object is ceased? The six aggregates and the afflicted mind, these seven, along with their retinues, are ceased. If the afflicted mind is not ceased, then there is no difference between cessation and non-cessation between cessation and the non-conceptual absorption. Moreover, this only exists in the desire realm, because in the form realm there is no nose and tongue consciousness, and in the formless realm there are no five aggregates, so the five and two aggregates are ceased in order. The Hearers say that the six aggregates are not ceased.

According to the Śrāvakayāna scriptures, it is said to be a cessation of just the six consciousnesses, but in reality, it is explained as including the cessation of the afflicted mind. Even in that state, there is the ālaya-vijñāna, so it is with mind. Fifth, regarding its nature: Both the Sarvāstivādins and the Mahāyānists consider it to be a "non-associated formation." However, the Sarvāstivādins consider it to be substantially existent, while the Sautrāntikas and above consider it to be nominally existent. Some say: Saying that this is "non-associated" is to accord with the views of the Śrāvakayāna school, but in the Mahāyāna tradition itself, it is considered to be a special samādhi. As it is said in the Daśacakra-kṣitigarbha-sūtra: "Bodhisattvas, abiding in the samādhi of cessation, completely sever the three perceptions and the three feelings," and so on. Also, in the Prajñāpāramitā-sūtra, it is said to be a transcendent samādhi, said to be absorption, and said to be the dharmakāya of enlightened wisdom. Therefore, some say that this is the non-conceptual wisdom of the Mahāyāna noble ones. That is, the noble brothers Asaṅga and Vasubandhu: Not to mention understanding its nature, the Sarvāstivādin monk Dharmamitra also considered that there is an unclear mind-consciousness at this time. If there is mind-consciousness, then contact and feeling, etc., will arise, and this is prevented based on the scriptures. Also, when proving that the Śrāvakayāna school has the ālaya-vijñāna, it is said: When entering the samādhi of cessation, because there are no six consciousnesses, if there is no ālaya-vijñāna, it will become like death, and so on. Therefore, in the brothers' treatises, it is said that in the case of the samādhi of cessation, the ālaya-vijñāna is with mind, but it is not said that other consciousnesses are with mind. There are no other great Mahāyāna treatises that explain it in a way that contradicts this, because one cannot explain the meaning of the sūtras and Maitreya's intention by one's own power, so it is unreasonable to explain the samādhi of cessation as a non-conceptual samādhi. Furthermore, if this is a non-conceptual samādhi, it must be mind-consciousness. If so, in the Thirty Verses, it says: The arising of mind-consciousness is generally said to occur at all times, except for the state of non-perception, the two kinds of absorption, mindless sleep, and fainting. It is specifically pointed out that consciousness does not arise in these five situations, so it is unreasonable. Therefore, that which is attained through the power of the path and
