I am the four right abandonments. Regarding this, it is also as before. First, what is the object of abandonment? It is the four: virtuous purification, and unwholesome afflictions that have arisen and have not arisen. Second, how is it abandoned? It is abandoning the afflictions that have arisen, not allowing them to continue in succession; and not generating afflictions that have not previously arisen in the continuum; and increasing the purification that has arisen; and generating the purification that has not previously arisen in the continuum, that is, initiating diligence as the cause of the fourth. Regarding this, the sutra says: "Generate aspiration, strive, initiate diligence, hold the mind well, abide well." Thus, the four are spoken of in relation to each other. This sutra shows the practice of diligence accompanied by a place, that is, aspiration is the place, because it precedes diligence. Effort is attending to the signs of calm abiding, good holding, and equanimity, these three by attending to the signs, are the time to practice the faultless antidote. Moreover, if the component of insight is greater and the component of calm abiding is less, like a lamp in the wind, the mind is extremely agitated, therefore one cannot clearly see reality, so at that time, attend to the sign of calm abiding. When it is the opposite of the former, like falling asleep, one cannot clearly see reality, so at that time, attend to the sign of good holding. When the two, calm and insight, enter equally and naturally, attend to the sign of equanimity, this is effort. Initiating diligence is for the purpose of eliminating sinking and excitement, because good holding etc. are mentioned after it. Moreover, when the mind sinks inward, attend to the form of the Buddha etc., holding the mind well in a way that uplifts the mind; when it is excited outward, attend to things that cause aversion from samsara, abiding the mind well in a way that settles the mind, these two eliminate sinking and excitement. Third, the essence is diligence. Fourth, for what purpose is it abandoned? The first two cause all unfavorable factors to decline, and the latter two obtain the increase of all favorable factors. Why are these four called right abandonments? Because one abandons the two, what should be abandoned, what has arisen and what has not arisen, therefore it is named by the name of one side.
