. Why contemplate? Firstly, the object of contemplation is: from the body to the Dharma. Among these, the body is of three types: the inner body is the five internal sense faculties that are form. This differs from the 'Great Destroyer' and the 'Collection of Actions by the Six Faculties'. The outer body is the five objects of form, sound, etc., which are not the basis of the senses. The body of both inner and outer is the outer sense base that serves as the basis for the senses, and the five faculties of others' continuums. Feeling is pleasure, pain, and equanimity. Mind is the aggregate of consciousness. Dharma is mental factors other than feeling, non-associated formations, and unconditioned phenomena. The latter three, such as within, are sequentially dependent on those three bodies, or arise with those three as their objects. These four are also sequentially regarded by children as the basis of self, the basis of self's enjoyment, the essence of self, and the basis for self to transform into Samantabhadra, and are the objects of contemplation. Secondly, how to contemplate is: to fully examine the four, such as the body, through the two characteristics of self and general. Among these, the general characteristics are: all conditioned phenomena are impermanent, all contaminated phenomena are suffering, and all phenomena are emptiness and selflessness. The self-characteristic is: the body is the cause of arising, is the arisen, feeling is the experienced, mind is the object-grasping, and for Dharma, it is said to observe what the nature of mental factors, etc., is. Furthermore, in the image of conceptual thought, images of a swollen corpse, being eaten by worms, etc., appear in the mind, and the body of self-nature, that is, one's own body that has not died, possesses such qualities, possesses such self-nature, and does not exceed these characteristics. Thus, contemplating impurity is contemplating equality. These three words are connected to the three bodies of past, future, and present. Feelings are all suffering, minds are all impermanent because they arise differently from different bases and objects, and Dharmas are all just Samantabhadra, devoid of self, thus practicing. This is the common practice. The uncommon practice has three distinctions: object, attention, and attainment. First, Hearers and Solitary Realizers only take their own body, etc., as objects, while Bodhisattvas take both their own and others' as objects. Second, Hearers and Solitary Realizers

The Hearers and Solitary Realizers contemplate impermanence, etc., while Bodhisattvas meditate without fixating on the characteristics of phenomena. Third, Hearers and Solitary Realizers meditate solely to be free from contaminated bodies, etc., while Bodhisattvas do not meditate for either separation or non-separation from them, but to accomplish the non-abiding Nirvana. Third, the essence, as in "wisdom and mindfulness," is the wisdom that distinguishes the individual and general characteristics of the body, etc., and the mindfulness that holds them without forgetting, as if distinguishing them. Fourth, the necessity is to meditate so that one may know the Four Noble Truths, abandon, and manifest them, and engage in meditation. Thus, knowing the body mindfulness as the contaminated body, the nature of suffering of conditioned existence; knowing the feeling mindfulness, that feelings of pleasure and pain are inseparable and are the cause of craving, realizing from the perspective of the result that craving is also the main cause of suffering, and therefore abandoning it; the mind mindfulness is the basis for clinging to self, contemplating impermanence, etc., on the mind, so that attachment to it will recede, and thus there will be no fear of annihilation, so one can manifest the cessation of suffering; the dharma mindfulness, knowing that all defiled dharmas are unfavorable, and knowing that pure dharmas are the antidote to them, knowing that it is a means to avert harm, and thus generating it, in this way one enters the Four Noble Truths. As the Madhyāntavibhāga says: "To abandon the suffering of conditioned existence, to abandon the cause of craving, to abandon the basis of clinging, and to abandon ignorance, one meditates on mindfulness, to enter the Four Noble Truths." Furthermore, to abandon the four inversions of clinging to purity, happiness, permanence, and self, to cut off attachment to the four contaminated bodies, etc., and to obtain the result of being free from those four. Why meditate on these four mindfulnesses? The Vaibhāṣikas believe that, like a child holding a piece of wood, mindfulness, with the power of not forgetting the object, places wisdom on the object. However, the teacher says: Wisdom distinguishes the objects of things, and then mindfulness holds them, so mindfulness abides in the realm of wisdom. This is excellent. Second, the path arising from effort, entering into the objects of the body, etc., from the perspective of individual and general characteristics, abandoning what should be abandoned and adopting what should be adopted, thus diligence arises, therefore this path is also...
