However, there is a difference in whether or not one realizes it in this way through wisdom. Śrāvakas and Pratyekabuddhas lack virtuous friends who outwardly show that all phenomena are without essence, and inwardly lack skillful means. Therefore, they cling to forms and other dependent arising phenomena as truly existent, and thus do not realize the equality of all phenomena. Bodhisattvas, on the other hand, rely on the excellent Mahāyāna virtuous friends as external conditions, possess undistorted instructions, and are skilled in the means of hearing, contemplating, and meditating based on the two truths, conventional and ultimate, as internal conditions. They possess the wisdom to realize the equality of all phenomena. In this context, there are two discussions on whether or not Śrāvakas and Pratyekabuddhas realize the selflessness of phenomena: How it is taught in the sutras; How it is explained in the treatises. The first part has two aspects: The way in which the selflessness of phenomena is not realized is taught in many sutras such as the *Nirvana Sutra* and the *Saṃdhinirmocana Sutra*, but since this is well-known, the sources are not written. The second is the teaching that phenomena are realized as without inherent existence. The *Ten Bhumi Sutra* states: 'O sons of the Victorious Ones, just as a prince born into a royal family, endowed with marks, overpowers all the ministers with the power of the king's blessing as soon as he is born, but not by discriminating with his own intelligence. When he grows up, he surpasses all the affairs of the ministers by developing his own intelligence. O sons of the Victorious Ones, likewise, a Bodhisattva, as soon as he generates the mind of enlightenment, overpowers all the Śrāvakas and Pratyekabuddhas by the greatness of his superior intention, but not by discriminating with his own intelligence. A Bodhisattva who abides on the seventh Bodhisattva ground surpasses all the activities of the Śrāvakas and Pratyekabuddhas by abiding in the greatness of knowing his own realm.' Also, the *Mother of Wisdom Sutra* states: 'Those who wish to study the Śrāvaka ground should also study the Mother of Wisdom.' Therefore, the first case is that the Śrāvakas and Pratyekabuddhas have realized selflessness because they cannot overpower the Śrāvakas and Pratyekabuddhas with realization until they have attained the seventh ground. Otherwise,

Then why doesn't it harm? The second point also shows that the Hearers and Solitary Realizers have not realized the absence of inherent existence of phenomena, because the Sutra itself says that Prajñāpāramitā is the cause of the Hearers' and Solitary Realizers' bodhi. Whether one clings to permanence, impermanence, self, or no-self, it is said that one should not abandon Prajñāpāramitā. Moreover, it is said that the wisdom of the Hearers and Solitary Realizers cannot even match the wisdom of a Bodhisattva who meditates for one day, etc., therefore it will not harm, because the reason for this is that it shows the difference in bodhicitta, and does not show the difference in wisdom. In the Sutra taught to the Hearers, it is also said: Form is like a mass of foam, Feeling is like a bubble in water, Perception is like a mirage, Formations are like a banana tree, Consciousness is like an illusion. This was taught by the Friend of the Sun (Buddha). Thus, if Hearers hear this, it is taught for the sake of abandoning obscurations. The second part has two: the first is the Sutra, and the second is the followers of the Sutra. The first is: The Ornament of Sutras says: How sad it is that those who abandon bodhicitta, abandon the mind of benefiting others and its means, abandon the meaning of the great intention, and abandon the bliss of seeing that ultimate truth, will go to peace. Thus it is said that those who abandon the Mahāyāna bodhicitta are separated from the bliss of seeing that ultimate truth, the absence of self of phenomena. In other treatises of Maitreya, in terms of the literal meaning, apart from a slight difference for the Self-Victors, there is no mention of Hearers and Solitary Realizers realizing the absence of self of phenomena. Following this, in the treatises of the brothers Asanga and Sthiramati, etc., there is also no mention of Hearers and Solitary Realizers realizing the absence of self of phenomena. Among the Madhyamaka masters, the great master Śāntarakṣita and his disciples, and all the masters who are proficient in Prajñāpāramitā, including Ārya Siṃha and his followers, say that Hearers and Solitary Realizers have not realized the absence of self of phenomena. In this regard, there are very many Indian and Tibetan scholars. Although it seems that in this Ornament of the Prajñāpāramitā Sutra, during the stage of application of the Hearers and Solitary Realizers, the aspect of the absence of self of phenomena is taught, it does not conform to the overall view. The second part has three: quoting the words of the masters, explaining the meaning of the words, and refuting the arguments against it. The first part is: The Sixty Stanzas on Reasoning says: If there is acceptance of things, then unbearable attachment and hatred will arise, and wrong views will be held, and from that will arise
