Thus, one attains the state of perfect and complete enlightenment. Second, regarding the path of purification, there are two aspects: the cause of purification and the actual purification. First, regarding the cause, there are again two types: the cause of arising and the cause of non-arising. First, the causes of arising are three: pleasing countless Buddhas through long-term service and offerings; perfecting the perfections such as generosity; and being skilled in meditating on non-referential, free from elaboration, calm abiding when practicing the six perfections. Second, the causes of non-arising are four: having not accumulated merit in the past, thus being harmed by demons; not having trained in the lineage of the Great Vehicle, thus not having faith in the profound teachings free from elaboration; not being accustomed to the meaning of selflessness of phenomena, thus clinging to things such as the aggregates; and not having associated with virtuous spiritual friends, thus being influenced by negative companions. Second, regarding the actual purification, there are two aspects: the general explanation of purification and the specific explanation. First, the sutra states: 'Subhuti, the purity of form is the purity of the result; the purity of the result is the purity of the Prajnaparamita; the purity of the Prajnaparamita is the purity of form. Thus, the purity of form, the purity of the result, and the purity of the Prajnaparamita are non-dual and cannot be made into two, they are not different and cannot be separated.' Here, there are three points: the nature of the three bases as the subject of the teaching; the three purities to be proven are one; and explaining the meaning of the four aspects such as proving non-duality. First, the three bases as the subject of the teaching are: the Prajnaparamita is the path of meditation; its result is the path of liberation, the result produced by the uninterrupted path; form and so on are the object or focus of the path of meditation. Second, the way in which the purity of these three is one is: when attachment arises towards an object, it is established as impure, but when attachment is abandoned by the antidote, since there is only one impurity to be purified, there is no difference between the object and the subject with regard to whether or not that impurity arises in terms of purity. Third, the four aspects such as proving non-duality are: non-duality means the absence of both grasper and grasped.

The absence of being made is the meaning of flexibility, which means it cannot become two, that is, consciousness cannot become the two of grasper and grasped. The absence of distinction or difference means the absence of many different natures. The indivisible means the absence of limbs or parts. Alternatively, the first two indicate, and the latter two explain. Second, the detailed explanation of purity is divided into two: the actual difference of paths and the distinction of the ultimate path. First, the actual difference is fourfold: the elimination of the obscuration of afflictions is the purity of the Hearers; the elimination of grasping thoughts, one aspect of the obscuration of knowledge, is the purity of the Solitary Realizers; the purification of the obscurations of the three paths, namely these two and grasping thoughts, is the purity of the Bodhisattvas; and the purification by all aspects of obscurations is the purity of the Buddhas, which is the ultimate or most excellent purity. Second, the distinction of the ultimate path is: although the three, Hearers, Solitary Realizers, and Buddhas, are the same in reaching the ultimate of their respective paths, why is it said that the purity of the Buddhas is the ultimate purity of all aspects, while the purity of the Hearers and Solitary Realizers is partial? That is because of the difference in paths. Because the nine paths of the Great Vehicle, which rely on the nine grounds as antidotes to the nine to-be-abandoned-by-meditation, are the cause for purifying the stains of the to-be-abandoned-by-meditation without exception, therefore the purity of the Buddhas is ultimate. Because that cause is what purifies all stains, its result must be liberation from all stains. The antidotes to what is to be abandoned, the small and medium nine paths of the Hearers and Solitary Realizers, are the cause for purifying one aspect of all aspects, only the obscuration of afflictions, and a small part of the stains of that and grasping thoughts, therefore the purity of the Hearers and Solitary Realizers is partial. Because that cause is the antidote to partial stains, the result obtained by it is also liberation from only one part of the stains. In this case, the basis of both what is to be abandoned and the antidotes is nine grounds, that is, the basis of what is to be abandoned is the nine grounds of the three realms, and there are two different bases for the antidotes. In the Abhidharma, it is said that the peak of existence is extremely unclear, and the desire realm is extremely unpacified, therefore these two do not rely on the uncontaminated, that is, the six dhyana grounds, the first three of the formless realm, and the ninth ground are considered the basis of the uncontaminated, while others consider this to be the Hearers' lack of skill in means.
