This is called "Answering Difficulties." Reply: Although it is not the actual affliction, the reason for calling it by that name is that it has the same function as affliction. Affliction binds beings to the three realms, and so does this. The reason it does not harm the actual thing is that it cannot truly afflict the mind. As it is said: Bodhisattvas with wisdom like the ocean, with such afflictions of their own nature, bind beings to the three realms, and the three realms also arise from affliction. It is also said: As long as beings are bound to the three realms, they are not truly afflicted by affliction. The necessity of the appellation is: Even if it is not explicitly stated in the scriptures, it should be shown that Bodhisattvas take the benefit of others as their responsibility. In order to benefit others, they bind themselves to samsara, so it should be known that they do not abandon afflictions for their own sake. Secondly, it comes from the Garland of Jewels Sutra: As it is said: World Honored One, just as with the condition of grasping, the three existences arise from the cause of contaminated things, similarly, World Honored One, due to the condition of the ground of the habitual imprints of ignorance, from the cause of uncontaminated karma, the Arhats, Pratyekabuddhas, and Bodhisattvas who have attained power, arise the three bodies of the mind-made body. This also shows that contaminated karma is not affliction. The ground of the habitual imprints of ignorance is, according to the Compendium: It is the subtle evil place of contamination that is said to be abandoned only by the single wisdom of the Thus-Gone One. For this, the ancient interpreters say: Like a container that has been filled with musk, even if the musk is no longer there, the scent can still be smelled, even if afflictions and near-afflictions have been abandoned, the habitual tendencies that serve as their basis still exist. Uncontaminated karma is: The mind that is not mixed with afflictions but becomes the cause of samsara, such as the eight types previously mentioned. Secondly, establishing it through refutation and response, divided into two: Refuting the extreme of imputation, establishing the meaning of existence. First, refuting the extreme of imputation: Some early Tibetans believe that the reason for not abandoning afflictions is that Bodhisattvas must take birth in samsara in order to benefit sentient beings, and this also requires afflictions as the cause, so they keep afflictions like roots and trunks.

And, Aduladashani: Among the four abilities of afflictions to generate suffering, hinder the arising of antidotes, take birth in samsara, and generate their own kind, it is believed that the first two are abandoned and the latter two are not abandoned. How do the Shravakas abandon them? If it is said that it is through familiarizing themselves with the absence of a self of a person, which is contrary to the root of afflictions, ignorance and clinging. Then, above the level of a Bodhisattva, they have also familiarized themselves with the absence of a self of phenomena, and although they want to abide in afflictions, they must also abandon them, because the powerful contradiction has been established. Furthermore, the outflows that are explained as the wisdom of the path being contaminated must also be considered as ignorance and desire, etc., so it must also be considered that the Buddhas also have them, because the wisdom of the path cannot abandon them in all aspects, and there is no other antidote. Furthermore, if taking birth requires the cause of ignorance and desire, etc., then how do Shravakas, Pratyekabuddhas, and Arhats who have entered the Mahayana hold onto samsara? If it is said that it is through the ground of the habitual tendencies of ignorance and uncontaminated karma, then where does that go for Bodhisattvas? Therefore, that of Bodhisattvas is the very root of virtue of compassion, aspiration, and bodhicitta, etc., and that also has the same function as afflictions, so it is established there. What the previous scholar Jamyang Yeshe said is an explanation that understands the key points of the sutras and commentaries. It should also be said in this way: If the cause of taking birth is the nature of afflictions, then the noble Bodhisattvas will have to take birth due to karma, and if taking birth is harmed by the suffering of that and that path, then that is also unreasonable. As the Uttaratantra says: "The noble ones have abandoned death, old age, and disease, and have completely abandoned the root of all sufferings. They are born by the power of karma and afflictions, but since those are absent in them, those are also absent." Furthermore, it is very contradictory to combine the cause of birth explained in the Sutra of the Ocean of Intelligence with the afflictions mentioned here, and to believe that afflictions are not imputed. Second, the meaning of establishing existence is: What is the meaning of the Bodhisattvas and Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas not abandoning afflictions and abandoning afflictions as said by the noble ones and teachers? What are those afflictions? Its meaning is, in general, not abandoning afflictions, and in particular, not abandoning the afflictions that are the cause of taking birth.
