It is because of the ground. So it is said. Furthermore, these consider that the sutras with definite locations are of definitive meaning, and the pervasive sutras are of provisional meaning, and they explain that its meaning is considered to be pervasive by reason. Second, there are two aspects to considering the three vehicles as provisional meaning: which sutra to follow, and how to establish them. The first is, in the Laṅkāvatāra Sūtra, it says: As long as the mind arises, there is no end to the vehicles. When the mind is completely transformed, there is no vehicle and no goer. The establishment of the existence or non-existence of vehicles, I speak of the one vehicle. For children, for the sake of provisional meaning, I speak of separate vehicles. So it says. And it follows the sutras such as the chapter on the truth-speaker of the White Lotus Sutra. Second, how to establish them, is how the teacher explains the meaning of the sutra, and how the followers refute the arguments against it. The first is, in the Commentary on the Mind, it says: These two vehicles also, because they arise in the Great Vehicle, for those who are exhausted by the path of existence, the meaning of rest is not that itself. And in the Praise Without Example, it also says: Because the nature of dharma is without difference, although there is no difference in the main vehicle, for the sake of guiding your sentient beings, the three vehicles are spoken of. So it is. Among them, the former is that the hearers and solitary realizers must ultimately enter the Great Vehicle, so the three vehicles are of provisional meaning, and the latter is that if one does not realize the meaning of suchness, one cannot become a qualified vehicle that transcends existence, and because suchness is without difference, for the wisdom that realizes it, there is also no difference in the way of realization. The Lesser Vehicle and the Great Vehicle are shown as provisional meaning by speaking of the three vehicles from the perspective of different ways of realization, and two ways of establishing them as provisional meaning are spoken of. This latter can also become the source of the hearers' and solitary realizers' vehicles realizing the absence of self-nature of phenomena. Second, the followers refuting the arguments against it is that the scriptures quoted by the Mind-Only school will not become harmful, because the three vehicles are spoken of with the intention of temporarily determining them in their respective lineages, not for the reason of permanent determination, because the Laṅkāvatāra Sūtra says: For those who are said to have no lineage, it is also said that sometime, by the power of the Buddha, they will arouse roots of virtue. Reason also cannot prove it, because proof and faith are different ways.

If one insists on the existence of three vehicles, then the methods of practice and inclinations of sentient beings are beyond enumeration, so the number of vehicles should also be that many. The distinction between methods of practice and inclinations is also not established, because some sentient beings who want to benefit others, due to encountering bad friends, etc., seem to become those who particularly enjoy the suffering of others. Those who enjoy the suffering of others will also, due to the influence of encountering virtuous friends, etc., become the opposite of this. From the difference in inclinations, determining three types, and from this determining three vehicles, is also not established. The view that the rebirth of an Arhat is cut off is also unreasonable. In the Mother Sutra and the Ratnavali, it is said that the birth and death of karma and afflictions are cut off, but there is birth and death that is transformed in an inconceivable way, and knowing the exhaustion and non-arising of those is also provisional. Therefore, by abandoning the afflictions of the three existences, one can prevent rebirth in the three realms, but it will not prevent being born miraculously in the lotus in the pure land and abiding in the realm of the uncontaminated. Second, from where do the Hearers and Solitary Realizers enter the Great Vehicle? In the commentary on the Samdhinirmocana Sutra, i.e., the Chinese commentary, it says that they enter from the eighth ground, but most scholars think it is reasonable to enter from the path of accumulation. The way these arise from the uncontaminated realm is as the Lankavatara Sutra says: Having obtained the body of Samadhi, they will not awaken until the end of the kalpa. Just as a drunk person will not wake up if there is no cause for sobering up. Similarly, those bodies of mine have obtained the knowledge of the Buddha's teachings. That's how it is. How long does it take to attain enlightenment? Some say one countless kalpa, and some say forty countless kalpas, which is slower than other Bodhisattvas. Third, is there an end to samsara? Some say that the nature of samsara is infinite and boundless, like space, so there is no end. Others say that like rust on gold, it can be exhausted by the opposing side, so there is an end. From these two views, the teacher seems to agree with the latter. Abhaya argues for an end through both scriptural and logical proofs, but in general, both the end and the non-end of samsara are spoken of by the Bhagavan, and both have reasons to be established, but the fruit
