Furthermore, some delight in the suffering of others; similarly, some only desire the happiness of existence and perform virtuous deeds; others, on the contrary, strive for their own liberation; and some only think of liberating others and perform generosity, etc., as causes for perfect enlightenment. Therefore, it can be inferred that sentient beings have different desires, because different fruits are produced by different causes. If these different desires do not have differences in kind, then because there is no difference, it is established that the kinds are different. In that case, the fruit, which is the vehicle, is also diverse. Thus it is said. Arhats have abandoned all the afflictions of existence, so they do not take birth there. Therefore, it is impossible to attain enlightenment, which is desired to be attained through many rebirths. This is what it says. Secondly, eliminating the contradictions within it: In the Compendium, arhats do not take rebirth, and the ultimate explanation is that they are of different kinds. In the commentary on the Uttaratantra, quoting the Garland Sutra, it is shown that there are inconceivable deaths and rebirths, and that the two vehicles are taught as temporary paths, and quoting the authority of the White Lotus Sutra, it is said that the Hearers are encouraged by the Tathagata to enter the Great Vehicle, these are contradictory. Answer: It is not contradictory to the first point. In the Uttaratantra, it is said that the transformed Hearers abide in solitude with bodies endowed with power, although they have transcended the birth and death of the three realms, considering that they have latent habitual tendencies of the obscurations of knowledge, and the actions arising from them, and the mental body dependent on these two, therefore it is said that the ground of the habitual tendencies of ignorance, and the mental body born from the cause and condition of uncontaminated actions will take birth, but it is not that the consciousness of an arhat connects to the next life after death. It is also not contradictory to the second point, explaining the fruits of Hearers and Solitary Realizers as temporary, like a city manifested in the middle of a wilderness monastery, because Hearers and Solitary Realizers have not abandoned all afflictions, so saying that there is a nature of nirvana is provisional, it is not explaining the three vehicles as provisional by transforming all Hearers and Solitary Realizers into the Great Vehicle. It is also not contradictory to the third point, in both the Samdhinirmocana Sutra and the Compendium, it is said that the Hearers who are encouraged by the Tathagata to enter the Great Vehicle refer to those who can be transformed, not those who abide in peace, and there is no special explanation here either. Thus it is said.

Thirdly, eliminating contradictions with other sutras: If the Three Vehicles are definitive, then the Lotus Sutra and others state that there is only one Vehicle. Since it is said that the One Vehicle is definitive and the Three Vehicles are provisional, and that great Shravakas such as Shariputra will become Buddhas, how are these to be explained? The Ornament of the Sutras states: Because Dharma and selflessness, liberation, etc., are the same; because lineages are different; because of attaining two thoughts; because of emanation; because of being ultimate, there is only one Vehicle. This is how contradictions are eliminated. The statement of the One Vehicle is based on these seven considerations: The seven are that the Vehicle to be traversed, the Dharmadhatu of the three types of individuals, is the same without difference like space; the Vehicle of the traverser, the three types of individuals, is the same in being without self; the Vehicle for the sake of which one traverses, the results of liberation, etc., are the same; the same in that lineages are different, that is, those of uncertain Shravaka lineage enter the Great Vehicle and become Buddhas, and the two different lineages also enter the same path; attaining two thoughts, the Thus-Gone One, from the first ground, attains equality, the non-duality of the nature of self and sentient beings; some of certain Shravaka lineage, for a while, practice the conduct of Bodhisattvas, abandon that and enter the Shravaka Vehicle, and when they attain its Nirvana, the Thus-Gone One says, 'In the past, I practiced the conduct of Bodhisattvas and became a Buddha.' As intended, they also, through the power of the Buddha, gain the thought, 'In the past, I practiced the conduct of Bodhisattvas and will become a Buddha,' gaining a moment of the same thought; emanation, for the purpose of taming, the Shravaka Vehicle shows the manner of passing into Nirvana many times; ultimate, there is no Dharma more excellent than that Great Vehicle, if it is certain, the necessity of certainly stating the One Vehicle based on those seven points is: As that very text says: Some are for the sake of guiding, and others are for the sake of embracing, the One Vehicle is taught to those who are uncertain. Some refer to Shravakas, and others refer to those of uncertain Bodhisattva lineage. There is no contradiction with the prediction that Shravakas will become Buddhas, this refers to emanated Shravakas or completely transformed Shravakas.
