Examining the Intention: Showing Other Differences Between Abandonment and Antidote. First: There are two ways to abandon afflictions: abandoning through the aspect of quiescence and coarseness, and abandoning through the aspect of selflessness. Furthermore, regarding the antidote that divides the objects to be abandoned by meditation into nine groups of nine on the nine grounds, the mundane and supramundane paths of meditation are also that many substances. However, the ninth object to be abandoned at the peak of existence cannot be abandoned by the mundane path of meditation. Moreover, the first abandons the manifest ground, and the second abandons the latent ground. The first is also common with non-Buddhists, and the second is the uncommon path of this Dharma. There are also two ways to abandon the objects to be abandoned by the supramundane path of meditation: some Hearers, without distinguishing between realms and grounds, meditate on the selflessness of the person in general, thereby simultaneously abandoning the small, medium, and large afflictions of the three realms; and by distinguishing them, they meditate on the grounds in sequence, thereby abandoning them in sequence. Thus, two ways are taught, without making a different distinction for the Great Vehicle. Second, examining what its intention is: It is said that the path with the aspect of quiescence and coarseness transcends the realms. This is merely taught as a means to gradually lead those who are to be tamed, who see faults as virtues, and who do not engage in the mind of abandonment, those who have not yet become vessels for teaching selflessness, to the meaning of selflessness. Therefore, that path, let alone completely abandoning the manifest afflictions in those grounds, only disparages the mere view of considering those grounds as supreme through attachment, but it cannot prevent all manifest attachment, because it does not harm its cause, the clinging to self and what belongs to self. Therefore, the aspect of quiescence and coarseness merely makes the continuum a capable vessel, and the path that liberates the three vehicles from afflictions is the aspect of selflessness. It should be known that both manifest afflictions and latent afflictions are abandoned by the mental engagement that favors the selflessness of the person and the mental engagement that is the very nature of reality. Third, showing other differences between abandonment and antidote has three parts: abandoning in sequence and simultaneously, the nature of what is to be abandoned, and examining what the meaning of abandoning and liberation is. First, sequence and simultaneity: among them, the objects to be abandoned by meditation that are practiced without distinguishing the three realms

Since thoughts have nine levels of difficulty in being abandoned, they are abandoned by nine corresponding antidotes, large and small. These are also abandoned by the Bodhisattva who gathers the small, medium, and large of the three realms separately and abandons them all at once. That is, by meditating that all phenomena of the three realms are empty of the two selves and free from elaboration, the clinging to things as real is averted. When that is averted, all the grasping and clinging thoughts of the three realms, which are the cause of that, will also cease, like a fire when the wood is exhausted. Second, the nature of what is to be abandoned is: of the two, manifest afflictions and latent predispositions, the main thing is to abandon the latent predispositions. As it says in the Compendium of Determinations: 'If you are freed from entanglement but not freed from latent predispositions, then entanglement will occur again and again. If you are freed from latent predispositions, then both latent predispositions and entanglement will never arise.' Like that. Third, the meaning of abandoning and liberation is: the power of a capable antidote arising in the continuum transforms the mindstream from being a vessel for what is to be abandoned into a non-vessel, so that there is no opportunity for the continuation of what is to be abandoned to arise. Sixth, the signs of attaining the ground are: on the first ground, one sees the universe of the great trichiliocosm completely filled with billions of trillions of treasures; on the second, one sees that world like the palm of one's hand, well-adorned with hundreds of thousands of billions of jewels; on the third, one sees oneself brave, holding strong armor in one's hand, subduing all external adversaries; on the fourth, one sees four wind mandalas blowing from the four directions, with various flowers scattered manifestly on the great earth endowed with all qualities; on the fifth, one sees a woman adorned with all ornaments wearing a garland of champaka flowers on her head; on the sixth, one sees a pond with four steps, strewn with golden sand, clear and unpolluted, completely filled with water endowed with eight qualities, adorned with utpala flowers, kumuda flowers, and white lotuses, and one sees oneself enjoying it with delight; on the seventh, one sees the precipices of the hells of beings on both the left and right sides, and one returns without fear or hesitation; on the eighth, one sees wild animals on both shoulders...
