Its selflessness exists, and what is refuted is the three aggregates, etc., or the refutation is made in the distinction of the four truths. The sutra says: "Here there is no self and no sentient being, this dharma arises from cause and condition." So it is said. The second has two: the system of those who speak of consciousness-only and those who speak of no-self-nature. The first is: Other-powered is the basis of refutation, the part of the completely imputed is what is to be refuted, and the part of other-powered and completely imputed that is empty from the beginning is considered to be the thoroughly established. It is said that what is established is the negation of the former. What is constantly non-existent? So it is said. Therefore, the completely imputed is empty of its own nature or characteristics, but the other-powered and the thoroughly established are considered to be empty by imputation, but they never consider their own nature to be empty. In short, the uncommon object of negation in this system is the self of phenomena, and it is only considered to be the completely imputed, and in the treatises of the brothers Asanga and Vasubandhu, there is no proof of self-emptiness in any undisputed place. The second, the system of those who speak of no-self-nature, is: negating the conditioned and establishing the unconditioned, similarly negating the real and establishing the unreal, negating existence and establishing non-existence, negating otherness and establishing selfness, negating emptiness and establishing non-emptiness in its place. In short, it is not a partial emptiness that only negates some parts and establishes others, and does not go beyond acceptance and rejection, but it is the emptiness that cuts off all networks of proliferation. If no dharma is examined, it deteriorates. Although joy appears like an illusion in the face of delusion, in ultimate truth, it is empty of its own nature from the beginning, so it is not perceived as any entity. The Root Wisdom says: If the conditioned is not established, what will the unconditioned be established? So it is said. Second, in the meaning of the limbs, emptiness is the basis of division. The nature of the division is considered to be twenty. First, intrinsic emptiness, the sutra says: What is intrinsic emptiness? The so-called inner dharmas are the eye, ear, nose, tongue, body, and mind. Among them, because there is no constant abiding and destruction, the eye is empty of the eye. So it is said. Here, it is explained by the basis of emptiness, the manner of emptiness, the term of emptiness, and the reason for the term. The first is the six senses. The second, the manner of emptiness, is the meaning of constancy.

The gateway to enter is the meaning of abiding, and by preventing from that, there is no abiding in the assembly of causes and conditions, therefore there is no birth, and therefore there is no destruction either. Therefore, since there is no arising and ceasing, it is said that the eyes and so on are empty of that. In the commentary on the Entering [the Middle Way], it says: Explaining it as the meaning of constantly abiding, not changing. By preventing change from that, in order to dispel the thought that it will abide for a while and then eventually be destroyed, it is said that it is not destroyed. Thus it is said. In the "Subduing Harm" of the Hundred Thousand [Verse Prajnaparamita Sutra], it says: The meaning of the absence of those two is neither permanent nor impermanent, therefore, the six senses do not have entities in the ultimate sense, otherwise they must become the entities of those two. Thus it is said, and this way of emptiness is the same for all. Third, the term for emptiness is: the emptiness of inner emptiness. The reason for applying the term is: the eyes and so on are inner dharmas. Second, the basis of emptiness is the five objects. The term is the emptiness of outer emptiness. The reason for applying the term is: because the mind does not grasp it. Third, the basis of emptiness is the five objects gathered by the senses and their supports. The term is the emptiness of inner and outer emptiness. The reason is that it is grasped by the mind and not gathered by the senses. Fourth, the basis of emptiness is: knowing all dharmas to be emptiness, or as the Entering [the Middle Way] says, all dharmas are without inherent existence. The term is the emptiness of emptiness. The reason is that this pacifies the clinging to emptiness. Fifth, the basis of emptiness is the ten directions, such as the east. The term is the emptiness of great emptiness. The reason is that the shape is extremely large. Sixth, the basis of emptiness is that Nirvana and the basis of the path are the same. The term is the emptiness of ultimate emptiness. The reason is that the meaning to be attained is supreme. Seventh, the basis of emptiness is the three realms born from conditions. The term is the emptiness of the unconditioned. The reason is that it is not established in one extreme, and can be transformed by the antidote. Eighth, the basis of emptiness is the unborn, which is different from arising, ceasing, and abiding. The term is the emptiness of the unconditioned. The reason is that it is devoid of birth and so on. Ninth, the basis of emptiness is the transcendence of the extremes of permanence and annihilation. The term is the emptiness of transcending extremes. The reason is that the reason for establishing an extreme or a part is in the middle.
