It has four kinds of concordant factors: abiding, distinction, and definitive discernment. In sequence, they correspond to the coarse afflictions that follow them, and to the arising of pure and uncontaminated paths of oneself and higher beings. Since there is no higher realm than the peak of existence, the distinguishing concordant factor is abandoned. Secondly, transcendence of the world refers to the four concentrations and the first three formless realms, i.e., the seven that are the basis for the path of transcendence, but not the peak of existence, because the uncontaminated path clearly cuts off its own object, while this realm is because the movement of consciousness is extremely unclear. As explained in the upper and lower Abhidharma. However, Master Senge Zangpo said that when the Shravakas meditate, it is because they are not skilled in means, but when Bodhisattvas meditate on this, they become uncontaminated because they are skilled in means. In general, the preliminary and actual practice of the first dhyana are divided into two types, namely, only and difference, and thus nine types of uncontaminated are explained. Third, explaining their nature, divided into three: the limbs of meditation, the analysis of the object aspects of the formless realms, and the explanation of the fruits of meditating on them. First, the limbs of meditation are divided into three: the difference between substance and imputation, the nature of the limbs, and the way of determining the number. The first is: In general, there are eighteen limbs of meditation from the perspective of names, as stated in the Treasury: The first has five: investigation and analysis, joy and happiness, and samadhi. The second has four limbs: conviction and joy, etc. The third has five: equanimity, mindfulness and awareness, happiness and abiding. The final has four: mindfulness, equanimity, neither happiness nor suffering, and samadhi. So on and so forth. The Vaibhashikas consider these to be eleven substances: investigation, analysis, joy, happiness, sensation, mind, happiness, samadhi, conviction, mindfulness, awareness, action, equanimity, sensation, and the substance of equanimity. According to the upper treatises, joy and happiness are one substance, and conviction is the nature of mindfulness, awareness, and equanimity, so there are nine substances, and the rest are imputed. Alternatively, happiness and so on are also the enjoyment of the wheel of consciousness, and quiescence is one, so it is counted as one substance, becoming eight. Second, the nature of the limbs is divided into four: First, among the five limbs of the first dhyana, investigation is merely seeking the nature.

These two (joy and happiness) for the other three dhyanas, also in the way of being included by the "ground," explain their function through the path of arising from non-existence, with discriminating speculation. Both of these are established on both mind and wisdom. Joy and happiness, in order, are considered by the Vaibhashikas as mental pleasure among feelings and the pleasure of pliancy among mental factors. The reason for thinking so is that if happiness is a bodily feeling, then it is the realm of sense consciousness, and sense consciousness is distracted outwards, so it will not be present in dhyana. Mind consciousness should not be a collection of retinues, because joy is also mental pleasure among feelings, and if the two arise simultaneously, there will be the fault of having the same entity. If they arise sequentially, then the first and second dhyanas will not become the five limbs and four limbs, because the limbs arise simultaneously. This is how they think. Furthermore, the Abhidharmakosha says: Other teachers say that the sense of pleasure arising from the mind is only pleasure itself, and even in all three dhyanas, only bodily pleasure is established as a limb. They say this. That is to say, the pleasure of the first, second, and third dhyanas is only bodily feeling, because the pleasure of pliancy is also present in the fourth dhyana. In the sutra of the third dhyana, it says: The body experiences pleasure, because it is said in one's own words, so it is bodily feeling, not just pliancy, but it should be pervaded by pleasure. This is how they think. The Yogacarabhumi says: The physical body experiences pliancy, and the mental body experiences the pleasure of feeling. The Samgraha Commentary says: From the first and second dhyanas onwards, merely through experiencing the feeling of the mind consciousness retinue, the body that is the basis of the senses is made capable, therefore it is the body; and through filling oneself and the corresponding mind consciousness retinue with joy, thereby doing two actions that benefit the mind, therefore they are established as pleasure and joy in order. This is how it is explained, the latter two are consistent, while these two are inconsistent with the root and commentary of the Abhidharmakosha. Samadhi is to gather oneself and the corresponding mental factors of the mind onto one object of focus. Among those five (limbs), because thought is very coarse, it is therefore regarded as a fault, and through practice, one is not attached to it, therefore it is the special reality of the first dhyana, the teachers explain it this way. Second, among the four limbs of the second dhyana, great joy is: The Abhidharmakosha says: Through samadhi, having great faith in definitely arising from the first dhyana.
