When the discursive thoughts of desire, which obstruct the path, do not arise, one might think: "Is this something I possess but have not experienced?" Or, "Is it because I do not possess it that I have not experienced it?" Thus, by focusing the mind on the aspect of suffering, desire arises. At this point, one might think: "Is my mind not yet separated from attachment to desire?" Therefore, in order to abandon the remaining objects to be abandoned, one cultivates in a peaceful and intense manner, and this is the discerning application of mind. In this way, constantly examining whether one has abandoned what should be abandoned, and in order to abandon what is manifest but not yet abandoned, the antidote to the three minor afflictions of desire arises, and this is the ultimate application of mind in preparation. However, this is only a temporary abandonment, not a complete abandonment, because the root of the seed has not been extracted, as the worldly path does not have that power. Immediately following this, relying on this strength, one enters the actual state of the first dhyana, and the application of mind that arises in accordance with the actual state is the application of mind that is the fruit of preparation. Thus, the number of applications of mind is fixed at seven because if the objects to be abandoned of the lower ground of nearness have not been abandoned, and the objects to be attained of the higher ground have not been attained, the actual state cannot be attained. Therefore, it is established as seven. In this way, of the cause, essence, and fruit of the path of nearness, the first two applications of mind cause what has not arisen to arise. The first application of mind causes the mind to focus after knowing what should be abandoned and what should be attained, and the second application of mind initiates diligence for that purpose. The fifth application of mind distinguishes what has already arisen, examining whether one has abandoned what should be abandoned, thereby completely removing the remaining objects to be abandoned. These three are the cause. Second, the essence is the third, fourth, and sixth, because they destroy the three great, medium, and small afflictions of the lower ground. Third, the fruit is the seventh application of mind. Second, the explanation of the remainder is the same as this, just as with the first dhyana, so it is up to the realm of neither perception nor non-perception. However, in the common language of the Abhidharma, it is said that when initiating the wheel of mind in the higher realms, one enters samadhi without the wheel of mind, so it is said that in the higher grounds, there is no thought-born in the formless realms and no hearing-born in the form realms. According to this, if one cultivates based on the support of the formless realms, then the first application of mind has both hearing and thinking, and if one cultivates based on the support of the form realms, then there is no thought-born.
