Merely through the cause of realization, one attains enlightenment, teaches the Dharma, and listens to the Dharma, thinking of oneself as a Pratyekabuddha who does not rely on words. These are the thoughts of those who only wish to attain the peaceful Nirvana for themselves alone. The method is: like children grasping at "I" and "mine," the noble ones ascertain selflessness, thereby becoming the basis for abandoning self-grasping; therefore, it is the basis. All aggregates, elements, and sense bases, the self of a person, and what is grasped are primordially empty; the basis is the auspiciousness of knowing this. The result is Nirvana with remaining aggregates and Nirvana without remaining aggregates, the two kinds of quiescence where afflictions and suffering are pacified. So, what is the difference between these two? There are three kinds of ultimate analysis on this: the view of the Hearers' School, the Mind-Only School, and the Middle Way School. First, the view of the Hearers' School. The meaning of having or not having remainder, what is desired as Nirvana. First, the difference between with remainder and without remainder is: some explain that the difference is that some have completely abandoned the origin but have not abandoned suffering, and some have completely abandoned suffering, but this explanation is not reasonable. Because although an Arhat has completely exhausted the karma and afflictions that necessarily project future existence, there are many virtuous or non-virtuous karmas created in the state of an ordinary being, as explained in the great scriptures. Therefore, although afflictions are completely abandoned, the continuum of aggregates has not ceased, and the continuum of aggregates has ceased, these two are considered the difference, as in the previously cited view in the commentary on the Sixty Stanzas on Reasoning. Both schools believe that an Arhat abandons the formations of life, and consciousness does not connect to future existence, but remains solely in the realm of peace. Second, Nirvana is, of the two, conditioned and unconditioned, unconditioned. On this, the Kashmiri Vaibhashikas believe in two cessations and space, that is, three unconditioned dharmas. The Vaibhashikas of Central India add Suchness, considering it four. Thus, among the four unconditioned dharmas, both believe that the two Nirvanas are respectively analytical cessations. The difference is that the Vaibhashikas consider it to be of the nature of "not other than," therefore it is substantially existent; the Sautrantikas consider it to be of the nature of "not existent," therefore it is nominally existent. Second, the view of the Mind-Only School. The meaning of having or not having remainder is the same as before. The nature is, as the Compendium of Determinations says

It is said to be the nature of extreme purity. In the detailed explanations, it is said to be individually examined and refuted. This system also believes that at the time of nirvana without remainder, the continuity of consciousness ceases. At that time, although the two obscurations are abandoned by the path and are not exhausted, because there is no basis, they will naturally revert. Therefore, there is no difference in abandonment between the nirvana of the Greater and Lesser Vehicles, but due to the power of aspiration and the difference in lineage, there is a difference in whether or not to perform the benefit of others. The third is the system of the Madhyamikas: In general, four types of nirvana appear in the scriptures: the nirvana of self-nature, the nirvana of non-abiding, the nirvana with remainder, and the nirvana without remainder. The first is that the self-nature of all phenomena is free from all elaborations. The second is the nirvana of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. The last two are divided into two. From the perspective of the Lesser Vehicle: When an Arhat has not abandoned the aggregates of life, although he has abandoned afflictions, there is still a remainder of suffering caused by karma and afflictions, which is nirvana with remainder. When the aggregates of life are abandoned, the coarse aggregates of suffering are abandoned, and in a pure realm, one dwells in the lotus bud with a mind-made body, which is considered to be nirvana without remainder. From the perspective of the Great Vehicle: It is the category of entering the three bodies. The nirvana with aggregates, Is established in the two Buddha bodies. To liberate from all aggregates, The Dharmakaya has no aggregates. Thus, establishing nirvana with and without remainder in the three bodies is also in accordance with the meaning of the Golden Light Sutra. The fourth is its rationality: The ego-grasping of a person is the root of all afflictions and suffering. By realizing the selflessness of a person through the base consciousness, ego-grasping is destroyed, and when it reverts, one is liberated from all suffering and attains nirvana, which is reasonable. There are also four points in the second aspect. The basis is: As it says in the Samadhiraja Sutra: This is the path to obtain nectar, abandon the evil path and rely on the right path. After seeing beings with wrong views, they are taught, therefore they are called Bodhisattvas. Therefore, Bodhisattvas refer to those who want to benefit beings until the end of samsara. The method is: To understand that all three paths are unborn in ultimate truth, and to understand cause, essence, and effect in conventional truth.
