As it says, "Vast, naturally luminous," in accordance with this, in this Ornament, the Dharmadhatu is spoken of as the lineage. Similarly, in the Uttaratantra, it also says, "In general, the lineage is, the lineage of the Three Jewels, the realm of all seers, that is also fourfold." Here, the four, namely, Dhatu, Bodhi, Qualities, and Activities are also explained as lineage. Specifically, "Like a treasure and a fruit tree, the lineage should be known as twofold, beginningless, naturally abiding, and truly arising, most excellent." Among the two lineages spoken of here, the naturally abiding lineage, exemplified by the treasure, is: "Likewise, within the mind is contained a precious treasure, the stainless Dharma-nature free from acceptance and rejection, due to non-realization, beings constantly experience, countless sufferings of poverty." Here, the Dharma-nature free from acceptance and rejection is clearly explained. Second, the way of becoming a lineage is: In general, in the mind-stream of sentient beings, there is the possibility of generating qualities, and the factor of being able to abandon obscurations, merely considering these as the lineage, both Madhyamaka and Chittamatra agree, and although it can be abandoned, it is because the defilements are adventitious. Regarding the meaning of adventitious, they disagree, as follows: The Madhyamikas consider defilements to be merely imputed by the mind, and in reality, they are emptiness without substance, therefore they are considered adventitious. The Chittamatrins consider defilements to be of the nature of other-dependence, arising from the mind and mental factors. Although they are truly substantial, they are generated by incorrect attention, which deviates from the nature of the aggregates, grasping at purity, pleasure, permanence, and self. Therefore, they can be reversed by refuting the object, and when that is reversed, attachment and other results will also naturally cease, therefore they are separable, so they are considered adventitious. Therefore, the Madhyamikas believe that when one realizes the emptiness of the mind's nature, in which nothing is established, all illusory grasping in conventional terms will be pacified, and all illusory antidotes will arise. Therefore, from the perspective of conventional truth, they impute to the nature of the mind itself, saying, "This is the naturally abiding lineage." The Chittamatrins believe that the luminous nature of the mind is inherently established at all times by its own essence, and that those defilements can be separated from it by antidotes.

Since the more one separates, the more one generates all qualities, therefore, the nature of reality, which is the basis of these two, is considered as lineage. Thus, although it is the same in considering the nature of reality as lineage, the reasons for establishing it as lineage are different because of the difference in whether or not one considers the basis for purifying defilements as real. Therefore, in the view of the Mind-Only school, the statement that defilements are exhausted from the beginning is due to the reasons of reversal, and it is only said in reference to the state of not entering reality. It is not merely said to be a name established by the mind, as those who speak of emptiness of inherent existence do, because that would be confusing. The non-exhaustion and non-arising of defilements is also a characteristic of this later view, so when one thinks like this, merely knowing the nature of what is to be abandoned as emptiness is established as having been abandoned, and one does not consider what is to be abandoned and the antidote as different entities to be real. It is like a magical elephant defeating another magical elephant. Furthermore, conditioned phenomena are established as lineage because they can generate uncontaminated phenomena, and explaining the nature of reality as lineage is merely because focusing on it can generate qualities, that is why it is established as lineage. Thus, it becomes lineage through the two ways of object-condition and cause-condition. Third, the classification of lineage is: the lineage of the three vehicles of Hearers, Solitary Realizers, and Bodhisattvas, the uncertain lineage, and the extinction of lineage, these five are explained in the Laṅkāvatāra Sūtra. The latter refers to being difficult to liberate, not to the complete extinction of lineage. If defilements cannot be abandoned, then it would become the nature of mind, and if that were the case, it would be impossible to transcend saṃsāra, just like the heat of fire. Fourth, the definition of lineage is: as stated in the Ornament, "Qualities are to be known as the meaning of liberation." Like this, qualities arise and originate from this, so it is lineage. Synonyms for the name are: as stated in the Yogācārabhūmi, "Lineage is also called basis, teacher, cause, support, proximity, and from the perspective of the eighth ground, it is also called forerunner and place." Second, explaining the thirteen dependent dharmas is divided into two parts: a general presentation of the thirteen dependent dharmas and a detailed explanation of the twelve dependent dharmas. First, the general presentation of the thirteen dependent dharmas is: the four decisive discriminations that realize selflessness, and the paths of seeing and cultivation, these six are the dharmas of realization, as well as the antidote uninterrupted path, the path of liberation that abandons afflictions, and the aban-
