Among all the explanations of the discriminations of the wisdom of the three realms, this is the intermediate one. Second, to think specifically: So, what kind of nature do these discriminations have, refuting or establishing? Most ancient scholars consider it to be a refuting discrimination, but since it is not shown as a refuting discrimination in either the root text or the commentary, it should be considered an establishing discrimination. If it is not a refuting discrimination, then how does this become a distinguishing dharma? Because discrimination exists as a dharma, it has the nature of refuting, but it is not exhausted by the path of seeing and meditation that arises from itself, but rather it is through having the object to be abandoned as its own result. Second, what is the object of discrimination? It is the grasped and the grasper. So, what is the grasped and grasper here? In general, Buddhists have three ways of establishing the grasped and grasper: the sense bases, consciousness and objects of consciousness, and self and what belongs to self. The first way is that the six objects are the grasped and the six faculties are the grasper. The second way is that all material things are the grasped and all consciousness is the grasper. The third way is that the self is the grasper and what belongs to the self is the grasped. Here, the latter is adopted, that is, the grasped is what is used by the self of substance and imputation, and is edible. The grasper is the one who uses it, the eater. Although the latter is explained as discriminating self or sentient beings, those are not real, but rather they cling to the basis of imputing them, which is just the dharmas of the aggregates, elements, and sense bases. That is, although one does not cling to the person who is permanent, singular, and independent as the grasper of the object, the imputation of the dharma that is separate from the self as the grasper arises. And, for that dharma, one also clings to it by considering it as a real substance of ultimate reality, or by considering it as merely an imputation that is not established in meaning, thus giving rise to two discriminations. Third, how to discriminate: How does discrimination cling to those objects? By focusing on the grasped of the common characteristic, in sequence, thinking "This is the grasped that should be completely abandoned," thus giving rise to inconsistent clinging; and thinking "This is the grasped that should be completely accepted," thus giving rise to consistent clinging, this is the way of clinging of the first grasped discrimination. Thinking "This is the path of the Lesser Vehicle, therefore one should turn away from it," and thinking "This is the path of the Great Vehicle, therefore one should enter it," this is the clinging of the second grasped discrim

That's the way it is. Grasping at the basis imputed as a person, and that which is imputed on that basis is merely imputed, this is the grasper or enjoyer of objects. Such clinging is the peak time of the two, grasping and conceptualization. That's the way of clinging. Thus, the sentient beings and persons mentioned here are not just thinking of individuals among the two, dharma and individuals, but merely represent the grasper of objects. Fourth, the distinctions of that conceptualization are: The root is the two, the conceptualization of what is grasped and the conceptualization of grasping. The conceptualization of what is grasped has two: the conceptualization of what is grasped on the side of complete affliction, and the conceptualization of what is grasped on the side of complete purification. The conceptualization of grasping has two: the conceptualization of grasping at substance and the conceptualization of grasping at imputation. Each of these four also has nine: Ignorance that is ignorant of the cause and effect of karma and suchness, and the aggregates of contaminated form, etc., produced by karma initiated by ignorance, and clinging to the four names together with form as self and what belongs to self, and clinging to the two extremes of permanence and annihilation as the object of clinging to the view of the perishable, and not knowing the faults and virtues of complete affliction and complete purification because of such clinging, and not abiding in the noble path from generosity to non-contamination because of such ignorance, and because of straying from the path in this way, focusing on dharmas in a reversed and mistaken way, and because of focusing in a reversed and mistaken way in this way, being attached to one's own side and hating the side of others, and the suffering generated through pure nirvana, that is, the contaminated things that generate higher realms are also the cause of birth, these nine are the objects of clinging of the first conceptualization of what is grasped. The aggregates that are not accumulated in complete purification, and the sense bases that are the meaning of the gate of birth, and the elements that are the meaning of lineage, and the dependent arising that is the meaning of birth, arising from what has not arisen, that is, forward and reverse order, and emptiness that is profound and free from elaboration, and the perfections that accomplish the perfection of the two benefits, and the path of seeing that separates from what is to be abandoned by the path of seeing, and the path of meditation that is the nature of thought form, and the path of no more learning that is the complete training, these nine are the objects of clinging of the second conceptualization of what is grasped. Self, that is, the grasper of objects, the independent one who does not rely on others, self, the unique one without a companion, self, the cause that opens up consciousness, self, from the seer to the knower
