In order to dispel disbelief, the indication of the four pairs of individuals was made. What harms reality is that there would be Hearers, Solitary Realizers, and Arhats who are Bodhisattvas by nature, and therefore the three vehicles would be confused. That was the order of explaining the instructions. Third, the branch of ascertaining the chosen fruit has two parts: the basis for the arising of the path of joining, and the path of joining that relies on the basis. First, the physical basis is: The self-commentary says, "The three only arise among humans and in the three continents. Those who have previously arisen also manifest among the gods. The fourth also arises among the gods." Thus it is said. Therefore, it is necessary to arise on the basis of the arising of the path of seeing. The mental basis is mainly based on any of the six dhyana grounds. Second, the path of joining that relies on the basis has four parts: essence, divisions, examining which is the discriminating wisdom, and distinctions. First, the essence has two parts: common and individual essences. First, the common essence is: definite realization through hearing, thinking, and meditation, of which meditation-born wisdom is the most important. Second, the individual essence is: When a Bodhisattva is in meditative equipoise, he does not see forms and other objects except for the expression of the mind, and only sees the expression of the mind itself appearing as the characteristic of self and generality. This is the samadhi of obtaining appearance, or the first kshanti (patience) of definite understanding of the Dharma, which is the heat. In order to increase the appearance of the Dharma obtained in the heat, one exerts steady effort with non-abiding action, which is the samadhi of increasing appearance, i.e., the peak. Having exerted effort in this way, the appearance of the Dharma increases greatly, and one abides in mind-only, realizing that this appearance as an object is only the inner mind. From then on, the phenomena that appear as objects are only mind, and are not other than mind. Having seen this, at that time one abandons the distraction of the grasped and only the distraction of the grasper remains. This is entering one side of the ungrasped, and because it follows the ungrasping, it is the samadhi or kshanti of entering one side of suchness. Having abandoned the distraction of the grasped in this way, and only abiding in the distraction of the grasper, one also thinks in this way:
