Thus it is known. How is the method of alternating meditation, which is the cause of being born in the Pure Abodes? There are two aspects to examine in this regard: the basis of meditation and the meditation that relies on it. First, the basis of meditation: meditate with the mind of the fourth dhyana attained by an Arhat and a Non-Returner. Among these, first, alternate within the three continents of the desire realm, and later, when completely diminished, alternate in the form realm. Second, the meditation that relies on it has three aspects: the practice of alternating, the measure of accomplishment, and the actual alternating. The first is the constant practice of the fourth dhyana of the uncontaminated, then the same with the contaminated, then entering the uncontaminated constant practice, and then gradually reducing it to alternate for two moments. Thus, the first alternating of the fourth dhyana, that fourth dhyana is also workable because it is free from eight faults and because the samadhi is clear. Second, the measure of accomplishment: the Vaibhashika school says that it is accomplished based on moments. Although it is said so, there are thoughts, comfort and discomfort, breathing in and out, ease and suffering. The teacher says in his auto-commentary: except for the Buddha, no one can alternate in moments, so it is perfected by entering into samadhi in three continuous states as long as desired. Thus, first alternate the fourth dhyana, and later also alternate with other dhyanas. Third, the actual alternating: as a result, the cause of being born in the five Pure Abodes, there are five types of alternating meditation, from alternating three to alternating fifteen. It is not necessarily these five types of alternating meditation, because these five only alternate the fourth dhyana, and it is also said to alternate with others. The way these alternate is: including one contaminated between two uncontaminated, that is, alternating three. Then repeat this, for a medium of alternating six, a large of alternating nine, a very large of alternating twelve, and an extremely large of alternating fifteen. Thus, if it is thought that the alternating methods of the others are also no different, and if one can alternate three, then all can be done, then it is not so, in the usual case, one series can alternate three, etc., but cannot alternate others, so there is no fault. Among these, the cause of being born in the Pure Abodes is contaminated, because the uncontaminated cuts off existence. Contaminated and uncontaminated are those that have the aspect of uncontaminated truth, and the contaminated is merely the pure virtue of the world.

Second, going to the peak of existence: Experiencing the taste of all the absorptions, being born until obtaining great fruit, abiding in a pure place, gradually being born in the formless realm, and finally passing away at the peak of existence. Second, nearly going to the formless realm: By the power of exhausting the aggregates of form, not going from here to the realm of form, but taking birth in the formless realm. Here, there is no intermediate state in birth, so there is passing away immediately after birth, and there are four kinds: with action, without action, and upward transference. These distinctions do not apply to rebirth in the desire realm, because the so-called rebirth in the desire realm means that in the previous life, one obtained either of the first two fruits, and thus obtained the non-returner here. Third, considering the basis of these: Do the five nearly going to the form realm and the four nearly going to the formless realm rely on the desire realm or the higher realms? The initial undertaking of these must rely on the desire realm. Second, passing away on that very basis: It is a non-returner, different from nearly going to the form and formless realms. Because this does not arise in the higher realms, and is a non-returner, it also does not arise in the desire realm. If one obtains the absorption of cessation through this, it is called manifesting it with the body of a non-returner. Fourth, there are two kinds of Arhats: First, the one who has entered: With the position of the fruit of non-return, from striving to abandon the first of the abandonments of cultivation of the form realm, up to striving to abandon the ninth of the peak of existence. Second, the one who abides in the fruit position: When the one who has entered abandons the ninth abandonment of cultivation of the peak of existence, he is an Arhat. Regarding this, if we distinguish by the way of abandoning obscurations, if one is liberated from both the obscuration of afflictions and the obscuration of absorption, then it is liberation from both parts; if one is liberated only from the obscuration of afflictions, then it is liberation from the part of wisdom. These two are also called adorned and unadorned. If we distinguish by faculties, there are two kinds: faith-liberated and vision-attained. The Vaibhashikas believe that a dull-faculty person can degenerate from the Arhat state and even regress to the stream-enterer state. But the Sutrantikas believe that it is impossible to degenerate from the Arhat state, and that there is only degeneration in terms of abiding in bliss in this life. The teacher and his disciples also consider this to be excellent. Third, the one who arises all at once: Before obtaining the mind of absorption, one manifests the path of seeing, and then relies on the first preparatory stage of the transcendent path,
