Equality of self and others, and realization that Buddha and one's own Dharmadhatu are inseparable, and because one desires that just as one's own suffering ceases, so too should the suffering of others. Third is the distinction between the grounds: on the ground of adhimukti-caryābhūmi (ground of practice through aspiration), it arises from aspiration; on the first seven grounds, pure adhyāśaya (heightened intention); on the eighth ground and the following three, vipāka (fruition); and on the Buddha ground, bodhicitta that has abandoned obscurations. Some say that the Buddha does not have bodhicitta, because if the Buddha had bodhicitta, it would have to exist like a cloud, but it does not. As it says in the Ornament: "The bodhicitta of the princes is said to be like a cloud." If it is said like that, there is no fault, because the princes have bodhicitta, and it cannot be denied that the Buddha has bodhicitta. It can also be understood as the bodhicitta that the princes are to attain. If it is not understood in this way, it contradicts the previous distinction between the grounds, and it would be too extreme to think that even ultimate bodhicitta does not exist. If so, the Buddha would have desire, and if so, that would be conceptual thought, which is not reasonable? There is no fault in that either. As it says in the Moon Lamp Sutra: Although the Buddha does not have a mind with conceptual thought that seeks meaning, he does have a mind without conceptual thought that seeks meaning, or although the intention is conceptual thought on the path of learning, it is without conceptual thought on the Buddha ground. Whichever of these two statements is accepted, there is no contradiction. Fourth is the distinction of tenets: wanting to place all sentient beings in Buddhahood first and then become a Buddha oneself, like a shepherd; wanting to become a Buddha at the same time as oneself and others, like Maitreya; wanting to become a Buddha oneself and then liberate others, like the mind of a king, there are these three kinds of bodhicitta. Third is the benefit: As it says in the Bodhicaryāvatāra: "Once bodhicitta has arisen, in an instant, those miserable beings bound in the prison of samsara are called the sons of the Sugatas, and are revered by the world with gods and men." And as it says in the Mind Commentary: "Without generating bodhicitta, one will never attain Buddhahood, and there is no other means of accomplishing the benefit of others in samsara." Thus, the temporary and ultimate fruits are explained, and in short, in the Śrīmālādevīsiṃhanāda Sūtra: "The merit of bodhicitta, if it had a form, it would fill the entire realm of space."

Those are the meanings of what was said, "That is more excellent than that." Second, there are five aspects to receiving the purifying Bodhicitta instructions: the basis for receiving, from what cause to receive, from where to receive, the nature of what is received, and the boundaries. First, in general, merely hearing instructions is something that even Śrāvakas and Pratyekabuddhas possess. Specifically, within the instructions of the Mahāyāna, there are both ordinary and extraordinary ones, and what is indicated here is the latter. Moreover, if one hears from an actual Buddha, one must sow the seeds of a great accumulation path. As stated in the Ornament: "One obtains direct knowledge from meditation, through the gateway of direct accomplishment. For the sake of offering and listening to countless Buddhas, one travels to all realms." Second, from what cause does one receive? As stated in the Ornament: "At that time, from the lineage of Dharma, in order to obtain tranquility and vast wisdom from the Buddhas, one will obtain vast instructions." Like that, it depends on the Dharma lineage Samādhi. There are three aspects to this: First, the definition is: When one is placed in equipoise, one possesses the memory and Samādhi that are capable of grasping the meaning of the scriptures beyond enumeration from the Victorious Ones. Second, the explanation of the term is: It is the ability to continuously or uninterruptedly grasp the words and meanings of the Dharma scriptures. Third, the boundary is: The extraordinary is in the highest Dharma, and the general is in the great accumulation path. Third, from where does one receive? Some believe only from the Buddha, but as it says, "The Buddhas abiding in the ten directions, etc.," a Buddha and a spiritual friend who can teach the Mahāyāna instructions are also sufficient, like the instructions of the Mother Sutra, because there are many Śrāvaka teachers who practice the Mahāyāna instructions. Fourth, the nature of what is received is: Some say that the words directly taught by the Buddha are unreasonable, because the teacher is not necessarily a Buddha in the special instructions, as previously stated. Moreover, in general, it is not necessarily the Buddha's word, because even in something like the Ornament for Clear Realization, the meaning of the special instructions is fully complete. Therefore, all Sutras and Śāstras that fully explain the path to Buddhahood for those of the Mahāyāna lineage are special instructions. Some believe that both the words of instruction and the practice according to the instructions are instructions.
