If divided, there are four aspects: all non-vipaka dharmas, all vipaka dharmas, all dharmas are without characteristics, and all dharmas are non-dual, realizing these four in a single instant. The eighth is the four dharmas of the Dharmakaya: the essence is naturally pure, and also pure from all adventitious stains, which is the characteristic of the Svabhavikakaya. The Rupakaya that appears only to Bodhisattvas among those to be tamed, which becomes the co-emergent cause of the Nirmanakaya, is the characteristic of the Sambhogakaya. The body that arises from the co-emergent cause of the Sambhogakaya, which tames many pure and impure beings, is the characteristic of the Nirmanakaya. The ultimate wisdom of the completely perfected state of Buddhahood is the characteristic of the Dharmakaya. The completely pure qualities and activities that arise from the Dharmakaya as the co-emergent cause are the characteristics of activity. That concludes the classification of the body. Second, the detailed explanation of the branches is divided into three parts: the three knowledges of what is to be known, the four practices of cultivation, and the detailed explanation of the branches of the resultant Dharmakaya. First, the explanation of the three knowledges of what is to be known is divided into three parts: the detailed explanation of the branches of the Omniscient Wisdom to be attained, the Path Wisdom of the method of attainment, and the Basic Wisdom to be abandoned. First, the explanation of Omniscient Wisdom is divided into four parts: the nature of the path is the generation of Bodhicitta, the acceptance of the instructions for purifying Bodhicitta, the branch of definitive understanding as the result of the instructions, and the actual practice of the meaning of the instructions without error. First, the nature of the path is the generation of Bodhicitta, divided into three parts: the basis for the arising of Bodhicitta, the nature of Bodhicitta that is relied upon, and the benefits of arising from that nature. First, the basis is divided into two: the physical basis and the mental basis. First, the physical basis is as stated in the Sutra of Path Wisdom, where many sons of gods generated Bodhicitta, and in the Sutra Requested by the Naga King Ocean, where twenty-one thousand Nagas generated Bodhicitta. Therefore, it does not require the basis of Pratimoksha vows, nor does it require being free from all states of disadvantage. The mental basis is: faith directed towards the Victorious Ones, compassion directed towards sentient beings, and hearing the benefits of Bodhisattvas, these three. As stated in the Lamp of the Jewels: If one has faith in the Victorious Ones and the Dharma of the Victorious Ones, if one has faith in the conduct of the sons of the Victorious Ones, if one has faith in the unsurpassed Bodhi, then the mind of great beings will arise.

Furthermore, in the Ornament [for Clear Realization], it says: "Its root is regarded as compassion." Like that. Second, concerning the nature of dependent bodhicitta, there are the entity, definition, and divisions. First, there are five views on the entity. Master Asanga considers it to be the essence of aspirational bodhicitta. In the Bodhisattva Ground, it says, "The supreme aspiration of bodhisattvas is the generation of bodhicitta." Master Vasubandhu considers the essence of bodhicitta to be mind, as stated in the commentary on the Ornament. However, in the Ornament, it says, "The aspiration of the steadfast is a mind with desire." Since the mind with desire is said to be aspiration, the views of the two brothers converge. Master Āryadeva considers, "The so-called generation of bodhicitta, mind is consciousness," and he considers the essence to be mind, specifically the five sense consciousnesses that only look outward, as well as the ālaya-vijñāna and the afflicted mind, which are neutral. Considering these, he explains the mental consciousness, which can serve as the basis for all white dharmas and is suitable for establishing the path, as the entity. Similarly, Master Simhabhadra also, when explaining the definition of bodhicitta in the Ornament of the Sutras, [says]: "Great joy and great effort, great benefit and great arising, the arising of a mind possessing two meanings." He thinks that the last line refers to mind, and he thinks that a mind with intention is shown as bodhicitta. Among these, great joy is not being weary of practicing austerities for a long time with armor-like diligence. Great effort is accomplishing the armor as it is with application diligence. Great benefit is for the sake of benefiting oneself and others. Great arising is accomplishing great enlightenment. The first two lines show the actions of a person, the next two show the actions of benefit, and the qualities of fully grasping the result are shown. The two meanings refer to focusing on enlightenment and the benefit of others. Master Buddhadasa considers the desire for benefit itself to be bodhicitta and considers mind and mental factors to be the same entity. Master... considers both mind and intention, saying in the Possession of Qualities, "The so-called entity of generating bodhicitta, mind is mind and intention."
