Thus it is. Secondly, the characteristic is: the mind that arises in conjunction with the desire for complete enlightenment for the sake of others. Thirdly, there are four types of detailed classifications: classification from the aspects of essence, manner of arising, boundary, and viewpoints. Firstly, classifying from the aspect of essence, there are two types of bodhicitta: aspirational bodhicitta and engaging bodhicitta. There are two views on this: the views of other schools and the presentation of a valid position. The first has four different assertions: Yeshe Zhap (Jñānapāda) asserts that aspirational bodhicitta is for all worldly beings, while engaging bodhicitta begins from the Joyful Ground. This is asserted based on whether or not one has attained a ground. The Clear Words (Tsongkhapa's commentary on Nagarjuna's Root Verses on the Middle Way) explains it based on whether or not one has taken the vows. Others assert it based on whether or not one has attained non-retrogression, and whether or not one has made vows regarding the result and the cause. Secondly, presenting the valid position: In the Compendium of Trainings (Śikṣāsamuccaya), it says: "Bodhicitta is of two types: the mind aspiring for enlightenment and the mind engaging in enlightenment." The Sūtra of the Arrayed Tree (Gaṇḍavyūha Sūtra) says: "Son of good family, those beings who aspire to unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment are also rare. Even rarer are those beings who have set out for unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment." It is like this. Furthermore, the Guide to the Bodhisattva's Way of Life (Bodhicaryāvatāra) says: "Bodhicitta, in brief, should be known as twofold: the mind aspiring for enlightenment and the engaging [mind] of enlightenment. Just as the difference between wanting to go and going is known, so should the wise gradually know the difference between these two." Since the views of these scriptures are consistent, it is explained in this way. That is to say, Sher Jung (Śer 'byung) quotes this scripture and says: "Although it does not go beyond the desire for complete enlightenment for the sake of others, the difference in their characteristics can be understood from the presence or absence of actions of body, speech, and mind." Therefore, first, great compassion arises focusing on sentient beings, and then, based on this, the mere thought arises that one must attain Buddhahood in order to liberate all of them from samsara, this is aspirational bodhicitta. After that, by taking vows and so on, even if one engages in just one of the six perfections, the practice of unsurpassed enlightenment, it counts as engaging bodhicitta. Therefore, the essence of aspirational and engaging bodhicitta

Although both have the same thought of attaining Buddhahood for the benefit of others, these two are contradictory because of whether or not they are sustained by the activity of practicing Bodhi. For example, it is like merely giving rise to the thought of wanting to go to that place, and then embarking on the road and being sustained by the action of going. Therefore, aspiration is merely the initial mind. As it is said in the first chapter of the Stages of Meditation: "That which is initially sought for the benefit of those beings is the aspiration mind. That which is subsequently upholding vows, that is, entering into rituals, is the engaging mind." Thus it is said. Secondly, the difference in the way of arising is twofold: arising from signs and arising from the power of meditation. The first is, as stated in the Ornament: "The power of friends, the power of causes, and the power of roots, the power of hearing, the power of virtuous habits, the unstable and stable arising, are explained as the mind generation taught by others." Thus it is said. Among them, the mind generation that is taught by others and arises from the verbal actions of others is the mind generation that arises from taking up signs. There are also many ways in which it arises: arising from the power of friends, that is, from virtuous friends; arising from the power of causes, that is, from the power of lineage and the power of virtuous roots, that is, arising from the flourishing of lineage; arising from the power of much hearing and the power of virtuous habits, that is, arising from constantly listening, holding, and explaining in this life. Among them, the first is unstable, and the remaining four are stable. The second is, as stated in the Ornament: "Perfect Buddhas are greatly pleased, accumulations of merit and wisdom are greatly gathered, non-conceptual wisdom towards the Dharma, because it arises, it is considered supreme. Dharma and sentient beings, and the deeds of the Buddhas, because of finding equality of mind in the supreme, that one is especially joyful and distinguished." Thus it is said. Among them, the first line of the first verse indicates receiving the supreme teachings, the second line indicates accumulating the supreme cause, and the third line indicates the distinction of realizing the supreme understanding, these three distinctions show that the mind generation is the ultimate truth. Also, because the Joyful Ground is attained, it shows the cause of that especially joyful distinction, that is, equality of mind towards the Dharma, sentient beings, the Buddhas, and the deeds of sentient beings, these are in order the selflessness of phenomena,
