Because clinging does not pervade, because the statement "I" also appears there, therefore there is self-clinging. That is what it means. Second, the answer to that is: All phenomena of ordinary beings are known to be without self, which is to conceive of self as merely imputed by belief-intention. And the clinging to imputation explained to noble ones is to want to conceive of self as merely imputed by suchness-intention. And the words of the noble ones, such as "I at that time," are conventional truths shown as a means to be understood by others. Since there is no characteristic self-clinging, those debates are meaningless. So, is it not unreasonable that noble ones generate the imputation-clinging concept of a person in the continuum of those on the path of joining, and here also that concept is explained as something to be abandoned on the path of seeing, and it becomes that substantial clinging concept is not accepted as something to be abandoned on the path of meditation, because the first clinging concept is only in ordinary beings and the second is only in noble ones? Because imputation-clinging is made into two through the door of two intentions, it is said that ordinary beings and those to be abandoned on the path of seeing have the latter concept, which is done from the perspective of belief-intention. The intention of what is spoken to noble ones in the root text is directed towards suchness-intention. The term substantial clinging is not used for what is to be abandoned on the path of meditation. Shantipa asserted that these two definitely exist, explaining that imputation-clinging concepts exist in hearers and solitary realizers, and substantial clinging concepts exist in ordinary beings. Third, the answer to refute the debate is: If the clinging concept spoken of here as clinging to sentient beings is a person from the perspective of both person and phenomena? Or is it referring to merely phenomena included in the mind-continuum, which is the basis for imputing a person? If it is the first, then the concept with an object is an afflictive obscuration, so hearers and solitary realizers would also abandon it, which is also unreasonable, because it is an uncommon object to be abandoned on the bodhisattva path, and if these two are abandoned, then the two apprehended concepts can also be abandoned. Therefore, hearers and solitary realizers can abandon all four concepts of grasper and grasped, which is too extreme. If it is the second, then it is unreasonable that the scriptures say to cling to sentient beings and persons, and in the debate response of the Sun Ray, to explain the presence or absence of substantial clinging by the presence or absence of self-clinging. In general, for clinging concepts, there are two types of clinging as a grasper to a person and merely to phenomena, and because both must be abandoned by bodhisattvas, the nature of both must be acknowledged. Therefore, both ordinary beings and noble ones...

Even if one realizes selflessness, there is a difference between manifest and unmanifest. Just as the grasping of these two is established as the grasping of substance and imputation, even if one does not directly realize the selflessness of phenomena, the difference between whether or not one realizes it also makes it possible to understand the two obscurations of knowledge, which grasp at sentient beings and noble ones, grasping at the mere phenomena as the enjoyer of substance and imputation. The reason for dividing the grasping of sentient beings and noble ones into the grasping of substance and imputation is because it is the main reason. Otherwise, the afflicted mind would not enter until the seventh ground, because the grasping of substance pervades the nature of self-grasping. Through this reasoning, one should also know the existence or non-existence of the two types of grasping that are based on phenomena. Second, the antidotes are the two antidotes of grasping at substance and grasping at imputation. First, there are nine antidotes to grasping at substance: First, the Mother Prajñāpāramitā does not grasp at forms, etc., and does not abandon them, which is the antidote to grasping and abandoning faults and virtues. Second, because one does not attend to forms, etc., one's roots of virtue increase, the six perfections are completed, one attains omniscience, and it is the cause of Buddhahood, it is said to be the antidote to the truth of attention. Third, whether or not attending to or not attending to is the cause of the three realms, what is said is both the abandonment and the antidote related to the three realms. Fourth, acting without attending to it, not abiding in all phenomena, is the antidote to abiding by clinging. Fifth, not being attached to its reason, without manifest attachment, is the antidote to manifest clinging. Sixth, attending to the very absence of attachment, and the Tathāgata said that all phenomena were not grasped and that enlightenment was attained, but if one thinks like that, one is far from the Mother Prajñāpāramitā and has fallen away, because the Mother Prajñāpāramitā says that there is no enlightenment or teaching or imputation of any phenomena, it is the antidote to grasping at the reality of phenomena as imputation. Seventh, showing that attachment to the very absence of grasping is also far from the Mother Prajñāpāramitā, that is, saying that it is not spoken of with manifest attachment, is the antidote to attachment to the six perfections. Eighth, the antidotes such as the pāramitās are not separate from them, the antidote and its object are the same, it is the antidote to grasping at the antidote. Ninth, the armies of the wheel-turning king, etc., go wherever they wish, and this metaphor explains that the five follow the Mother Prajñāpāramitā and enter into omniscience, which is the antidote to falling away by going as one wishes.
