It should be known. Thus it is. Second, the reason for establishing the four maras: Why are they established as four maras? They are established as four from the perspective of death. What are the four? Where does one die? By what does one die? What is the nature of death? And what prevents one from transcending death? That is, the arising of the five aggregates and in the elements, with afflictions taking rebirth in future lives, dying after being born, the cessation of the life force of sentient beings, and striving to transcend death, but being unable to completely transcend it, or being able to transcend it only after a long time. Third, the manner of establishing from where: The mara of afflictions does not exist from the eighth ground onwards. Although death due to the power of karma and afflictions does not exist from the first ground onwards, the death and transference of the mind-made body does not revert until enlightenment is attained. Therefore, the mara of death and the mara of the aggregates exist until enlightenment is attained. The mara of the son of the gods also obstructs transcendence from those three, so as long as those three exist, it also exists. The Ratnagotravibhāga also says: "Having attained the state of deathlessness and peace, because the mara of death has no movement." Thus, it is proclaimed that the Dharmakāya of the Able One is the establishment of permanence. It should be known that the latent tendencies of these are destroyed simultaneously with the attainment of enlightenment. In the Destruction of Harm it says: "By abandoning the outflows of desire, the mara of the son of the gods is vanquished. By abandoning the outflows of existence, the mara of death is vanquished. By abandoning the outflows of ignorance, the mara of afflictions is vanquished. By abandoning the outflows of views, the mara of the aggregates is vanquished. From the four maras, obtaining victory is called the exhaustion of outflows." This is different from others. Here, it is said that the four maras are vanquished in the stage of application, which is meant in a coarse and partial sense. The skillful means of abiding without abiding is to abide by contemplating all dharmas as equality, in a manner that does not cling to the extremes of samsara and nirvana. As it is said: "Like a bird flying in the sky, there is no abiding place, but not abiding there, it does not fall to the ground. Likewise, a Bodhisattva acts in the door of liberation, not touching nirvana, nor acting in signs." Thus it is. The benefit of other disciples is to act as if propelled by the force of the aspiration made in the past, which is the accomplishment of the aspiration. In all aspects, having donned armor for the benefit of others, one does not manifest the true extreme until the roots of virtue are perfected.

For example, a skilled archer shoots an arrow into the sky, and other arrows follow closely behind, supporting each other in succession, preventing the previous arrow from falling to the ground. If that person wants the arrow to fall, it will fall to the ground. Similarly, a practitioner of the supreme Prajnaparamita, who practices with wisdom, skillful means, power, and miraculous abilities, will not attain the supreme emptiness until these roots of virtue are perfected. Thus it is said. What is uncommon to Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas is: due to the power of not abandoning all sentient beings, all the ascetic practices that do not manifest the true limit are extremely familiar. Until that very omniscient wisdom is attained, one should understand that the true limit will not be manifested even in the intermediate state. Thus it is said. Not clinging to and not being attached to all dharmas means: being completely pure and not tasting the flavor of white dharmas such as meditation and concordant factors. At the time of that great Bodhi, one possesses the dharmas of the aspects of enlightenment, and they will not be completely lost until one attains unsurpassed perfect enlightenment and becomes a Buddha. Thus it is said. Non-objectification is: by fully meditating on the gate of liberation, emptiness, one abandons the objectification of self and dharmas of sentient beings. These sentient beings have been practicing the four inversions for a long time, constantly perceiving permanence, happiness, self, and purity, so one should practice for their sake. Thus it is said. The exhaustion of signs is: by fully meditating on the gate of liberation, signlessness, one dwells in abandoning the clinging to signs from the form of sentient beings to omniscience. These sentient beings have been practicing signs for a long time, and so on, thinking that one should remove those faults of those sentient beings. Thus it is said. The exhaustion of aspirations or the absence thereof is: by fully meditating on the gate of liberation, aspirationlessness, one dwells in abandoning the joy of craving from the form of sentient beings to omniscience. These sentient beings have been practicing aspirations for a long time, such as being very happy with Indra, Brahma, the world protectors, and the wheel-turning king, and so on.
