It is said: 'Whatever arises dependently is explained as emptiness. It is a dependent designation; that itself is the Middle Way.' And in the Sutra it says: 'Just as relying on wood and strings, and with the effort of hands, when these three come together, sounds arise from instruments like the lute and flute. Depending on these, sounds also arise. If wise people investigate where these sounds come from and where they go, they will not find the sound coming or going. Likewise, all conditioned phenomena arise from the aggregation of causes and conditions. The yogi who sees that conditioned phenomena are empty and unmoving understands that. The inner is empty, and the outer is also empty. Sentient beings are empty of self and without a place to dwell. The characteristic of phenomena is the very nature of space.' And it says: 'If phenomena had some inherent nature, then the Victorious Ones, along with the Hearers, would know it. Permanent phenomena would not pass into Nirvana. The wise never desire elaboration.' Extensive Explanation: The second part is the extensive explanation, which includes: establishing the two truths, and explaining that all phenomena are interdependent. Establishing the Two Truths: The first part is about establishing the two truths, which includes conventional truth and ultimate truth. Conventional Truth: First, conventional truth is the method for realizing ultimate truth. The Buddhas also initially taught about the formation and destruction of the world, the aggregates, the elements, birth, aging, and so on, and the benefits and drawbacks of virtue and non-virtue, and so on. When they are endowed with the capacity for emptiness, they teach the unsurpassed scriptures that reveal the ultimate truth, and then lead the beings to the state of Nirvana. Therefore, it is necessary to rely on conventional truth to explain ultimate truth. If one is not skilled in the distinction between the two truths, one will not understand the essence of the Buddha's teachings, and one will not accomplish the benefit of oneself and others. Because one is not skilled in means, one will fall into the bad view of either eternalism or nihilism. Therefore, it is important not to be confused about the distinction between the two truths. In the Sutra of Meeting Father and Son, it is also said: 'The knower of the world, without hearing from others, made the distinction between these two truths, which are conventional truth and the truth of ultimate meaning.' The noble Nagarjuna also said: 'The Buddhas teach the Dharma based on two truths, the conventional truth of the world and the ultimate truth.' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

is the truth. If one does not fully understand the distinctions between these two truths, then they do not understand the profound depths of the Buddha's teachings. Without relying on conventional terms, one cannot realize the ultimate meaning. Without realizing the ultimate meaning, one cannot attain nirvāṇa.’ As the noble Āryadeva said: ‘Just as a barbarian cannot be tamed with another language, similarly, without understanding the worldly, one cannot tame the world.’ Therefore, here, in order to realize the true wisdom of the ultimate truth, from taking refuge, generating bodhicitta, to the practice of śamatha, the stages of the conventional truth are shown. And to recognize the nature of śamatha, there are three aspects: the nature of śamatha, its divisions, and its opposing factors. First, śamatha is samādhi, which is the one-pointed abiding of the mind on a virtuous object. The ultimate truth. Second, there are divisions by nature and divisions by number. First, the bliss of samādhi expands the elements, leading to physical comfort and other forms of bliss. Based on the extreme clarity of intelligence, there is certainty of direct perception of past and future lives, and non-conceptualization without interruption by other objects when placed in samādhi. Second, the four dhyānas and the formless samādhis are all samādhi. No matter how good the state of abiding alone is, it is not the nature of śamatha until the samādhi of the higher realms is attained, because its cause is the one-pointedness of mind in the desire realm. Third, its opposing factors are the faults of samādhi such as dullness and agitation. Furthermore, some experiences of bliss, clarity, and non-thought are easily confused with vipaśyanā, so one should understand their differences. In addition, if one divides the conventional truth, there are two types: the conventional truth and merely conventional. The conventional truth is so-called because it obscures the true meaning due to ignorance, and its nature appears to be true, which is the conventional truth. And things like the double moon and the yellow conch shell are not true even in the conventional sense, so they are merely conventional. For those who possess the objects of the noble ones and appearances, the conventional appears, but the conventional truth does not appear, because they realize that all phenomena are without inherent existence in all ways, and they have no presumption of being truly manifest. Furthermore, correct view --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
