Collected Teachings of Je Tsongkhapa JTs164: A Guide to the Madhyamaka View 15-6-1a ༄༅། །A Guide to the Madhyamaka View ༄། །Preliminary Practices ༄༅།། A Guide to the Madhyamaka View 15-6-1b Namo Guru Arya Manjushri! Through reliance on various interdependent origination, may I show the nature of reality as it is. Take refuge, accumulate merit, purify obscurations. Meditate on the arising and ceasing of interdependent origination. The nature of body, speech, and mind, and the profound instructions, I will now impart to fortunate practitioners of enlightenment. All phenomena of samsara and nirvana, appearance and emptiness, are dependently originated and without inherent existence. Abide in samadhi. The aggregates of body, speech, and mind, are not inherently existent as self. Other than that, there is no self. Understand the meaning of selflessness. Aggregates, elements, sense bases, and the arising and changing of elements, virtuous and non-virtuous, all phenomena of samsara and nirvana, appearance and emptiness, are dependently originated and without inherent existence. Free from arising, ceasing, and abiding, beyond existence and non-existence, affirmation and negation. This freedom from elaboration, indivisible, profound and peaceful, whoever understands it attains nirvana. May the vajra words of the guide to the view of equality between samsara and nirvana be auspicious! Homage to the Guru and the venerable protector Manjushri! Here, I will explain the guide to the view of the equality of samsara and nirvana, which has three parts: preliminary practices, the main practice, and the concluding summary. That is, 'Through reliance on various interdependent origination, may I show the nature of reality as it is.' This is a summary of all the contents. Next, I will explain them in order. First, the preliminary practices are 'Take refuge, accumulate merit, purify obscurations.' To allow blessings to enter, practice Guru Yoga; to accumulate merit, practice the offering of the mandala; to purify obscurations, practice the recitation of the hundred-syllable mantra. Most of these are understood elsewhere. Main Practice Second is the main practice, which is divided into general and specific. General Main Practice First is 'Meditate on the arising and ceasing of interdependent origination.' In order to be liberated from samsara, and in order to recognize that the root of all faults is ignorance, practice the arising and ceasing of interdependent origination. In order to attain liberation and omniscience, one must abandon the view of self and self-grasping, and in order to realize the meaning of reality, one needs to practice the arising of interdependent origination. Practicing the arising and ceasing of interdependent origination, first is practicing the arising of interdependent origination: ignorance... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Grasping at 'I' arises based on the aggregation of the five skandhas (Sanskrit: pañca-skandha, the five aggregates), taking it as an individual and sentient beings. This is because, influenced by the clinging to self, sentient beings grasp at what is without self as self, grasp at the impure as pure, and grasp at what is not happiness as happiness, based on the perverted cognitions of the four viparyāsas (Sanskrit: viparyāsa, the four inverted perceptions that contradict reality). Therefore, they think, 'These are my relatives, friends, companions, and close ones; they have helped me and are my allies,' thereby accumulating immeasurable karma driven by attachment. Furthermore, they think, 'These are my enemies, harm-doers, and adversaries,' thereby accumulating immeasurable karma driven by hatred. Similarly, for those who are perceived as their own people and on their side, they desire to have happiness, fame, wealth, honor, and all perfections; while for those who are perceived as their enemies and adversaries, they generate hatred out of fear of suffering bad names, ill repute, poverty, short life, many diseases, inauspiciousness, and various faults. Thus, under the influence of both attachment and hatred, quarrels, fights, jealousy, harmful intent, wrong views, killing, stealing, sexual misconduct, idle talk, harsh words, divisive speech, lies, as well as envy, competition, contempt, arrogance, and various afflictions arise like a river, accumulating immeasurable sins, leading to the experience of unbearable suffering in endless cycles of lower realms. This collection of formations (Sanskrit: saṃskāra, formations or mental imprints), which is the root cause of unbearable suffering, arises entirely based on the clinging to self. Based on this formation, consciousness (Sanskrit: vijñāna, the act of discerning) arises. Based on consciousness, name and form (Sanskrit: nāma-rūpa, mental and physical phenomena) arise, where name refers to the four aggregates: feeling (Sanskrit: vedanā), perception (Sanskrit: saṃjñā), formation, and consciousness. Form refers to the gradual formation of the embryo, etc., from the mixture of parents' sperm and blood. Based on name and form, the six sense sources (Sanskrit: ṣaḍāyatana, the six sense fields) arise, that is, the aggregation of the root, consciousness, and object gives rise to contact (Sanskrit: sparśa, sensory impression). Based on contact, feeling (Sanskrit: vedanā, experience) arises, which is the experience of suffering, happiness, and equanimity (neither suffering nor happiness). Based on feeling, if happiness is experienced, one does not wish to be separated. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
