Craving to experience happiness, craving to reject suffering, and craving to remain neutral towards what is undecided – this is the arising of craving. Based on this, there arises the acceptance and undertaking of actually experiencing the realm. Based on this, there arises 'becoming' (srid pa), which causes the suffering of falling into evil paths and samsara. Based on this, there arise all the aggregates of evil paths and rebirths. Based on this, there arise aging and death. Aging is the complete maturation of the body, and death is the complete abandonment of the body. Furthermore, based on the ignorance, action, and consciousness of the previous life, the name and form up to 'becoming' (srid pa) of this life arise, leading to birth and old age and death in the next life. Similarly, based on the ignorance, action, and consciousness of this life, the name and form up to 'becoming' (srid pa) of the next life arise, leading to birth and old age and death in that next rebirth. Understand all previous and future lives in the same way. Thus, the twelve links of dependent origination, like the cycle of a water bucket, involuntarily cause all sentient beings to experience endless and unbearable suffering of samsara. Know that all of this arises solely from clinging to a self. Second, meditating on the reversal of dependent origination: Since all the suffering of evil paths and samsara is by nature clinging to a self, all the suffering of evil paths and samsara will cease by abandoning clinging to a self. As long as clinging to a self is not abandoned, all suffering will arise like a stream of water, because the cause and condition of all suffering, which is clinging to a self, still exists. For example, as long as the great outer ocean exists, streams of water will continue to arise. Then, how can clinging to a self be abandoned? It can be abandoned by the wisdom that realizes selflessness. Then, can't other virtuous deeds abandon clinging to a self? They may temporarily pacify some of the afflictions that are branches of clinging to a self, such as greed, hatred, and jealousy, but they also give rise to pride. For example, having become a great scholar through the merit of hearing and thinking, one becomes proud with the thought 'I am a great scholar,' leading to jealousy, competition, contempt, and disparagement of others... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In all circumstances, afflictions such as arrogance arise from reliance on the qualities of the wise. Some, dwelling in secluded places, cultivate the essence of tranquility and abide there, gaining qualities, whether small or great. They then become arrogant and denigrate wise individuals and virtuous monks who do not dwell in secluded places, generating afflictions such as jealousy. Similarly, whether one engages in giving, upholding moral discipline, practicing patience, exerting effort, engaging in meditative concentration, or any other virtuous activity, these actions merely serve as antidotes to afflictions and bring about some temporary happiness. However, they do not lead to ultimate happiness, liberation, or the attainment of omniscience, nor do they eliminate all obscurations, because they lack the wisdom that realizes selflessness. Therefore, other than the wisdom that realizes selflessness, other virtuous actions cannot abandon self-grasping. As long as one clings to the aggregates, as long as there is self-grasping, there is no possibility of liberation from the suffering of bad rebirths in samsara. As the noble Nāgārjuna (龙树,Nāgārjuna, नागाअर्जुन,Nāgārjuna,龙树) said: 'As long as there is clinging to the aggregates, there is self-grasping. If there is self-grasping, there is also karma. From that, there will be rebirth.' And as the venerable Candrakīrti (月称,Candrakīrti, चन्द्रकीर्ति,Candrakīrti,月称) said: 'Initially, there is attachment to 'I' (藏文:ང་,梵文天城体:अहम्,梵文罗马拟音:aham,汉语字面意思:我), then attachment to things as 'mine.' Like a water bucket going up and down, one is without freedom. I prostrate to the one who has compassion for beings.' Therefore, yogis should not be attached to body, life, wealth, respect, verses, or even mere food and drink. They should exert great effort like extinguishing a fire on their head, engage in immeasurable austerities, rely on a qualified Mahāyāna (大乘,Mahāyāna, महायान,Mahāyāna,大乘) guru, practice profound instructions, realize the emptiness of the five aggregates, and prevent self-grasping. When that ceases, the aggregates of formations cease. When that ceases, the aggregates of consciousness cease. When that ceases, name and form cease. When that ceases, the sense bases cease. When that ceases, contact ceases. When that ceases, feeling ceases. When that ceases, craving ceases. When that ceases, grasping ceases. When that ceases, existence ceases... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
