On meditating on the appearance of the form body as being without inherent existence: Focus on a single body of the Tathagata (Thus Gone One) as the object of focus. Specifically, observe the various parts of the body such as the head and hands, the senses such as the eyes, the thirty-two major marks such as the crown protuberance, and the eighty minor marks such as fingernails the color of copper. By analyzing each one individually, nothing is established as the actual body of the Tathagata. Similarly, that body is not in any direction, location, above or below. It is not the aggregates, elements, sense fields, elements, changes of elements, things, non-things, conditioned phenomena, unconditioned phenomena, nor the appearance of emptiness. It does not come from Samsara (cyclic existence) or Nirvana (liberation). Therefore, none of these exist with any inherent nature. They do not go anywhere, so abide in that which is free from elaboration and without inherent existence. Second, using sound as the object of focus, recite the three syllables such as vowels (ālikāli) while contemplating. The sound with sixty branches, such as sound, echo, and emptiness like an echo in an empty valley, is without inherent existence. Where does the sound come from? The throat, tongue, teeth, flesh, bones, blood? The inner, outer, or middle of the body? Which direction, location, above or below? Where is it now? Where does it go from there? By analyzing, it does not come from anywhere, does not stay anywhere, and does not go anywhere. Recognizing this, abide in it. Third, using any implement such as a vajra (diamond scepter) as the object of focus. Analyze its inner, outer, and middle aspects, large and small parts, directions, locations, above and below, shape, color, etc., one by one. Nothing is actually a vajra, etc. Since it is not established in any way, it is free from all elaboration and becomes like space, abide in it. Therefore, the body, speech, and mind of the Tathagata are interdependent, and appear to be established in an unanalyzed state, but through intellectual analysis or meditation, it is not established in any way, it is free from elaboration and beyond the object of speech and thought. No metaphor can represent it, it transcends all directions and limits. Similarly, all phenomena of Samsara and Nirvana should be understood, the nature of all phenomena is undifferentiated and the nature is the same, therefore transcending all characteristics of acceptance and rejection, negation and affirmation, grasper and grasped, and subject and object. When this is known, it should be understood that profound and peaceful Nirvana is attained. Until this is known, one should continue to practice. That is, before practicing the selflessness of the person (Pudgalanairatmya), first search for the person; before practicing the selflessness of phenomena (Dharmanairatmya), first separate any phenomenon such as form and search for it; the same is true for practicing the emptiness of Nirvana. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Before Vipassanā (special insight), it is important to seek the body of the Tathāgata (Thus Gone One), and to question and learn about each object of focus individually. Especially during Vipassanā meditation, it is crucial to examine each object of focus, using both scripture and logic, to find evidence that proves Dharmatā (the nature of reality) is Pratītyasamutpāda (dependent origination) and is without Niḥsvabhāva (inherent existence). This is because, unless a firm understanding of dependent origination arises from within, there is no possibility of experiencing Vipassanā. Although there is no extensive explanation of scripture and logic here, a brief introduction will be given. Furthermore, one should combine it with definitive scriptures and pure treatises to gain a more detailed understanding. Following this is the introduction. Third, the introduction is divided into two parts: a brief introduction and a detailed explanation. Brief Introduction: As it is said, 'Whatever is dependently originated is without inherent existence.' Dependent origination refers to that which is caused by causes and that which is mutually dependent. For example, a pot arises dependent on the collection of all causes and conditions such as clay and the effort of a craftsman's hands. If examined individually, it does not arise solely from clay, nor from any other single factor. Therefore, it is without inherent existence. And because it arises dependent on the collection of all causes and conditions, it is dependently originated. Mutually dependent origination refers to the fact that a pot depends on the collection of all its parts—mouth, neck, belly, lip, base, inside, and outside—to be able to perform the function of a pot. If each of these parts is examined individually, none of them is a pot. Similarly, the mouth alone cannot perform the function of a pot. If each individual particle is examined, none of them is any part of the pot. If the direction of that particle is examined from all directions, above and below, the inherent existence of the pot is not established. Therefore, one should understand that the dependent origination of all phenomena is without inherent existence. If something were inherently existent, it would not need to depend on anything, but would be permanent, solid, and unchanging in all ways, unable to be affected by anything, unable to be benefited or harmed by anything, uncompounded, and not established as the nature of a thing. But such dependent origination is impossible. Therefore, Dharmatā can only be dependent origination, and nothing else. As the noble Nāgārjuna said: 'Apart from dependent origination, there is no phenomenon that exists. Therefore, apart from emptiness, there is no phenomenon that exists.' Dependent Origination --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
