It does not abide in any of the beginning, end, inside, outside, or middle of the earth. It does not abide in any of the external directions, above, or below of the body. It also does not abide in anything other than those. Therefore, rest evenly in the state of that which is not found. In that way, if the five skandhas are analyzed one by one, none of them are established, therefore the five skandhas are not self. I am also not the five skandhas, because I am not established apart from the five skandhas, and the five skandhas are also not established by nature. Resting evenly in the state of that which does not perceive the self anywhere, one should understand that the self is a dependent arising that is not established by nature. In that way, until a pure ascertainment arises that the self is determined to be a dependent arising, one should repeat the objects of focus again and again and meditate. Meditating on the Absence of Self of Phenomena: Second, meditating on the absence of self of phenomena, as it is said: 'Skandhas, realms, and sources, as well as, elements, derivatives, virtuous and non-virtuous, appearances, emptiness, samsara, nirvana, all phenomena, are dependent arisings without inherent existence.' Therefore, there are two here: meditating on the absence of self in impure phenomena of samsara, and meditating on the absence of self in pure phenomena of nirvana. Meditating on the Absence of Self in Impure Phenomena of Samsara: First, there are two: meditating on the absence of inherent existence of the object, and meditating on the absence of inherent existence of the subject. Meditating on the Absence of Inherent Existence of the Object: First, meditating on the absence of inherent existence of all the five elements, the five derivatives, the skandhas, the realms, and the sources. First, meditating on the absence of inherent existence of earth among the five elements, that is, focusing on any object made of earth, by analyzing its shape, color, and tactile sensation, etc., it is not established as earth. By analyzing its directions and particles, it is also not established as earth. Therefore, rest evenly in the state of the absence of inherent existence of earth. Similarly, one should also understand water. Fire arises dependent on the rubbing stick, the rubbing board, and the effort of a person's hand. If these are analyzed one by one, fire does not arise from any of them. By analyzing shape, color, tactile sensation, etc., it is not fire. Therefore, rest evenly as before. Focusing on wind, it does not arise from any direction, above, or below. By analyzing shape, etc., one by one, it is not established, therefore, it is as before. Space initially does not arise from any direction, etc., and ultimately does not go anywhere. Now, its essence is not established anywhere, therefore, rest evenly in the state that the five elements are not established by nature. Meditating on the absence of inherent existence of the five derivatives, that is, form... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Focusing on something like a vase, its shape, color, touch, mouth, throat, belly, bottom, and inner and outer parts, since none of these individually constitute the vase, remain equally at rest as before. Similarly, sound, smell, taste, and touch, each focusing on direction, up and down, inside and outside, middle, beginning and end, shape, and color, analyzing each one. Sound, smell, taste, and touch do not arise from any of these, and because their own nature is not established, remain equally at rest in that very state. In this way, all conditioned phenomena represented by the five elements and the five elemental changes, such as aggregates, realms, and sources, are by nature free from elaboration; all unconditioned phenomena represented by space are by nature free from elaboration; and in general, both types of phenomena are free from elaboration. Similarly, all phenomena are without inherent existence, free from elaboration, profound, peaceful, and without any inherent existence in any entity, and should be understood as arising dependently. Second, meditating on the object as being without inherent existence: Meditating on the object as being without inherent existence means that relying on the aggregation of the three—the eye sense, form, and the immediately preceding condition—eye consciousness arises. Upon examination, the immediately preceding condition is not eye consciousness. Neither the eye sense nor the object form, nor color, shape, touch, inner, outer, intermediate, direction, up, down, or any direction in the center is eye consciousness. They do not exist in any one of these, nor do they go or come from anywhere, so eye consciousness has no inherent existence. Remain equally at rest in that very state of not finding it. Similarly, ear consciousness, nose consciousness, tongue consciousness, body consciousness, and mind consciousness, each relying on the aggregation of their respective senses, immediately preceding objects, sound, smell, taste, touch, and phenomena, arise as their respective consciousnesses. But by examining each one, because they have no inherent existence, understand as before and then remain equally at rest. In this way, all phenomena of samsara, encompassed by object and subject, appear to exist in their own right when the interdependence is not examined, but in reality, they have no inherent existence and should be understood as being like illusions, dreams, mirages, and so on. Second, meditating on the selflessness of the pure, transcendent phenomena: Second, meditating on the phenomena of nirvana as being without inherent existence is divided into three aspects: meditating on body, speech, and mind as being without inherent existence. First, meditating on the body as being without inherent existence: --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
