Regarding the practice of the generation stage (Kyerim): Generate the pride of being that deity and remain single-pointedly focused on it. When its strength wanes, again strongly generate the pride of the deity and abide in it. By doing this, although at first it is contrived and meditated upon in this way, after a while, when the pride of the deity is stable, it becomes possible to transform the ordinary ego clinging in the mind into the pride of the deity. This should be done continuously during each session. The appearance of the deity and the meditation on the pride of the deity should be practiced alternately from the beginning. After meditating on the special appearance of the support and the supported, when that is remembered, ordinary appearances will no longer arise in the mind, but only special appearances will arise. At that time, one can purify the ordinary appearances in the mind. As explained earlier, when one can transform the uncontrived pride, one can purify the ordinary clinging in the mind. Then, rising from meditative equipoise, when the appearances of the outer world and the inner beings arise, view them as the deity and the palace. In this way, a stable samadhi will arise in which everything appears as the essence of the deity and the palace. Therefore, the generation stage is said to purify ordinary appearances and clinging. This is also one of the vows, as it is said: 'The nature of the three realms is the palace, and all beings are the mandala deities.' Arya Deva also said: 'Know that all these diverse things are the wheel of the mandala, why does your mind still wander?' This principle applies to both stages. In this vehicle, whatever appears is the mandala of the deity, whatever experience is great bliss, and whatever thoughts arise are sealed with non-arising. These need to be cultivated from the first stage. Although the great bliss of the completion stage arising from the life force entering the central channel is not present here, one gains a very stable clear appearance like that of union of father and mother. Therefore, one should combine this method and wisdom, and understand the great bliss of the generation stage arising from blocking the outflow of bodhicitta with the syllable ‘ཕཊ’ (Tibetan, फट, phaṭ, meaning 'cut'). Meditating on the generation stage of the wheel of the mandala is the main method for maturing the mindstream. Next is the practice of the completion stage (Dzogrim): Secondly, regarding the practice of the completion stage, there are three parts: the nature of the basis, the stages of the path, and the manner of manifesting the result. Regarding the nature of the basis: The first part is divided into two: the nature of the mind and the nature of the body. Regarding the nature of the mind: In order to understand the essence of the practice, first, the nature of the mind will be explained. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9-2-12a

9-2-12a To understand which part of the body is suitable as a focus for concentration, the second situation is shown here. First, showing the state of mind, as stated in the 'Two Examinations': 'The essence is formless, it is the seer; there is no sound, nor is there a hearer; there is no smell, nor is there a smeller; there is no taste, nor is there a taster; there is no touch, nor is there a toucher; there is no mind, nor is there anything arising from the mind.' Also, 'For the sake of understanding by the yoginis, the senses, the objects, and the consciousness of the senses are explained as the eighteen realms.' 'The nature is unborn from the beginning, neither false nor true, just like everything is like the moon in the water, those who desire should know like a yogini.' Among them, the five: form, sound, smell, taste, and touch, and the five from the seer to the toucher, indicate the senses from the eye to the body. From the perspective of the aggregates, it is the form aggregate; from the perspective of the āyatana (སྐྱེ་མཆེད་, Sanskrit: āyatana, Romanized Sanskrit: āyatana, literal meaning: place of birth), it indicates the non-self-nature of the ten colored āyatanas (སྐྱེ་མཆེད་, Sanskrit: āyatana, Romanized Sanskrit: āyatana, literal meaning: place of birth). 'Mind' refers to the consciousness aggregate and the mind āyatana (སྐྱེ་མཆེད་, Sanskrit: āyatana, Romanized Sanskrit: āyatana, literal meaning: place of birth); 'arising from the mind' refers to the three aggregates of feeling, perception, and volition, and thereby implies the non-self-nature of the dharma āyatana (སྐྱེ་མཆེད་, Sanskrit: āyatana, Romanized Sanskrit: āyatana, literal meaning: place of birth), which is the object of the mind. Furthermore, the words 'seer' and so on, also indicate the person who sees form, the person who hears sound, and the self and what belongs to me, etc. In short, it indicates the two non-selves of the non-self of the person and the non-self of phenomena. The emptiness of the essence (ངོ་བོ་, Sanskrit: svabhāva, Romanized Sanskrit: svabhāva, literal meaning: self-nature) 9-2-12b is indicated by 'essence (ངོ་བོ་, Sanskrit: svabhāva, Romanized Sanskrit: svabhāva, literal meaning: self-nature) is empty', which means that people and phenomena such as form do not exist with an inherently established self-nature. These explanations are the views of the commentary by the great accomplished Marpa. This refers to the meaning of 'without self-nature' or 'without self-characteristics' that often appears in the scriptures. Not existing in this way, established by self-nature or essence (ངོ་བོ་, Sanskrit: svabhāva, Romanized Sanskrit: svabhāva, literal meaning: self-nature), and being unborn by nature, does not mean that something that did not exist before is newly established through reasoning, but rather that it has always been that way, and recognizing that it is so, is indicated by 'from the beginning'. Marpa said: 'I went to the banks of the Ganges River, and through the kindness of Jetsün Milarepa, I realized that the ground (གཞི་, Sanskrit: vastu, Romanized Sanskrit: vastu, literal meaning: base) dharmata is unborn, the mind abides in emptiness, I saw the primordial face free from elaboration, I directly met the three kāya mothers, and the elaborations of me, Milarepa, were cut off from then on.' It is said that the view of Mahamudra was mainly obtained from Maitripa. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
