Then, regarding the explanation in the 'Ten Realities' by the master, 'Those who wish to know the Suchness, it is neither with characteristics nor without characteristics.' It explains that those who wish to understand the Suchness of reality should not adopt the Suchness of reality in the manner of having characteristics or not having characteristics. In the commentary by Pandit Sahajavajra, a direct disciple of Maitripa: The Sautrantika school of the Hearers, which has characteristics, and the Vaibhashika, which is without characteristics, and the Mind-Only school with both true and false aspects, and the Madhyamikas who practice Yoga, who nominally consider aspects as true and false, it is shown that the views of these schools should not be adopted. Furthermore, it says in the same text: 'Thus, the Madhyamika view of the noble Nagarjuna, the noble Aryadeva, and Chandrakirti, which is the characteristic of dependent origination, will become the way to know Suchness.' It is said that the views of these three should be adopted. Since the venerable Nagarjuna and Aryadeva are the main figures of the early Madhyamika school, other proponents of the Madhyamika view follow them, but there are many different ways of holding their views. The lord Maitripa said that he follows the tradition of the glorious Chandrakirti. Also, in the 'Ten Realities': 'The Madhyamika without the adornment of the guru's words is only mediocre.' It is said that the Madhyamika views of other teachers that are not adorned with the oral instructions of Chandrakirti are only mediocre. Therefore, one must follow the tradition of Chandrakirti to understand the ultimate meaning of reality. The meaning of 'neither true nor false' is as follows: As it is said in the 'Sixty Stanzas on Reasoning': 'Those who, based on dependence, see phenomena like the moon in water, as neither truly existent nor nonexistent, those ones will not be robbed by wrong views.' One should understand that those wise ones who see the nature of defilements and phenomena as arising from their respective causes and conditions, and as being dependently designated, are therefore not truly existent. These do not have even a little bit of inherent existence, because if they had an independent nature, they would not need to rely on causes and conditions. Therefore, one should generate the conviction that there is not even a particle of a target for clinging to truth. Although there is not even a particle of a basis for clinging to truth in grasping at characteristics, all the actions of samsara and nirvana, such as cause and effect, exist without fail like illusions. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Appearing like illusion, dream, and reflection. Therefore, these phenomena are not false like 'a rabbit's horn exists,' nor are they established solely by the inversion of mistaking a rope for a snake. If, for any phenomenon, there is no target for grasping at truth, not even a particle can be found, and there is no understanding of the view of emptiness, and no meditation placed upon that view, then no matter how much one meditates on the path, let alone becoming a Buddha, one cannot even transcend samsara. Therefore, in the Vajra Tent Tantra, it says: 'To reverse self-grasping, the victorious ones have spoken of emptiness.' In order to reverse the grasping at a self of persons and a self of phenomena, the Buddhas have spoken of establishing the view of emptiness. Although the ultimate truth is as previously explained, if, for phenomena that are merely names and designations, in conventional truth, the cause and effect, which are false like illusion and dream, have no definite basis for drawing certainty, so that one's own system cannot establish these, and one must rely solely on the delusions of others, then one will fall into the unbearable abyss of nihilism and denigration. Therefore, a very certain understanding of dependent origination as illusion is needed. Such a distinction of the two truths is needed, as even the great yogi Milarepa of this path said: 'To accommodate the thoughts of you inferior ones, the omniscient Buddha said that all exists.' As for the ultimate truth, there is no obstacle, not even the Buddha himself. There is no meditator, no object of meditation. There is no place to go and no sign of the path. There is no result, no form body and no wisdom. Therefore, there is no nirvana. Merely names and words are designated. The three realms, including the stable and the moving, have not been established from the beginning, there is no birth. There is no uncaused co-emergence. There is no karma and no ripening of karma. Therefore, there is not even the name of samsara. The ultimate meaning is like that.' Thus, having stated that in the ultimate sense, none of the phenomena of samsara and nirvana are established, not even a particle, he then said: 'Alas, if there are no sentient beings, from where do the Buddhas of the three times come? Since there is no effect without a cause, therefore, in terms of conventional truth, samsara and nirvana, all exist, as said by the Thubpa (Buddha).’ Existence, appearing as real things, and non-existence, the nature of emptiness, the two are inseparable in essence, of one taste. Therefore, there is no self-awareness or other-awareness, all is vast union. The wise who realize it in that way, do not see the consciousness, but see the wisdom. Do not see sentient beings, but see the Buddha. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
