Then, visualize the lama in front of you as your own crown, inviting him through mantra or visualization, and dissolving from the crown. However, in the paternal lineage passed down from Lama Marpa, as well as in the traditions of Tsur, Ngok, and Gya, it appears that they first lead into the generation stage. Lama Milarepa also said, 'In the bardo between appearance and death, in order to train the skill of awareness and mind, one should strive in both the generation and completion stages.' Furthermore, the earlier great lamas and others also hold that both stages must be cultivated. If one does not lead into the generation stage, it contradicts the tantras and their authoritative commentaries, and it also contradicts one's own tradition. Therefore, one should learn the generation stage before the completion stage. As it is said in the Hevajra Tantra, 'Having equally abided in the two stages, the Vajra Holder teaches the Dharma.' And, 'Through the yoga of the generation stage, the ascetic cultivates elaboration. Having made elaboration like a dream, even elaboration itself becomes non-elaboration.' And also, the Protector Nagarjuna said, 'For those who are well-versed in the generation stage and desire the completion stage, this method is taught by the complete Buddhas as a ladder.' Thus, many scriptures state that one must cultivate the generation stage first. The main purpose of the generation stage is to ripen the continuum well so that the realization of the completion stage can be fully born. Also, if one first gains a stable samadhi of the generation stage, then when cultivating the completion stage, it is less flawed to prioritize the yoga of deities in union. However, it is not the intention of the tantras to be satisfied with just that from the beginning. So how should one cultivate? Those who uphold the explanatory tradition of this system consider the foundation of this path to be tummo (Tibetan: གཏུམ་མོ།, Devanagari: चण्डाली, caṇḍālī, fierce woman, inner heat). And that is mainly the Hevajra." ] } --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Based on the Vajra lineage, he intends to guide into any of the four Hevajra lineages mentioned in the tantra. For the oral instructions of this tradition, the previous lamas mainly practiced Cakrasamvara. Gampopa relied on Mar Yul Lodan, a student of Zangkar, and practiced the Cakrasamvara of the Zangkar tradition. Pal Phagmo Drupa practiced the Mar tradition Cakrasamvara, which was passed down from Lo Chung. Chöje Drikungpa seems to have practiced the Chakro tradition Cakrasamvara, which was passed down from Mar Do. All three traditions rely on the mandala of the sixty-two deities of the glorious Lūipa tradition. Although there are two different practices, the tummo here is common to both Hevajra and Cakrasamvara. Therefore, it is permissible to practice either of these two generation stages. By meditating on the generation stage of the wheel of the mandala, one can ripen the continuum. This does not occur with a single hero and a single heroine deity. Therefore, one should perform the four sessions of yoga, guiding into a wheel of mandalas up to something like the five deities of Drilbu Zhap. Regarding how to extract experience in the generation stage: First, one performs a scanning meditation without mental wandering. Once that is complete, if the main deity has many faces and many hands, one temporarily sets aside meditating on the other faces and hands, and trains in focusing on the single-faced, two-handed deity. Within that, one first trains in the appearance, that is, one clearly establishes a coarse part of the deity's body from the ascending or descending order, until one can clearly visualize a half-part in one's mind. Then, one places one's mind single-pointedly on that with appropriate focus and relaxation. Whatever appearance arises that is different from what was initially visualized, one should not follow it for the time being, but rather focus on the initial object. If it becomes unclear, one repeats and meditates until the appearance becomes clearer and clearer. When one is able to clearly present what was visualized, and no other unvisualized appearances arise, and it feels extremely clear, even more so than what is seen with the eyes, then one needs a stability that can sustain the session free from sinking and excitement while placing the mind on that very clarity. Once one is familiar with the coarse body of the deity in that way, one trains as before to fully present the other faces, hands, and subtle parts such as ornaments. Then, one adds the consort on top of that and meditates in that way. After that, one connects with the other retinue deities. Finally, one needs to be able to clearly present all the coarse and subtle parts at the same time, including the dependent deity and the surrounding dependent palace, and be able to remain single-pointedly focused on that.
