Regarding the meaning of what 'ཉན་ཅན' (Nyen Chen, the Wise One) said: If one does not understand the state of existence prior to the impending death, one might mistakenly perceive the bardo as the tangible form of the time before death. Some believe that all bardos possess the form of the time before death, along with the appearances of companions and so on from that time. Others, seeing in the *Compendium of Abhidharma* the statement, 'The form of where one will be born,' believe that the bardo possesses the form of the next life, along with the appearances of companions and so on from that time. Still others explain that it has the form of both the previous and subsequent lives: for the first three and a half days of the bardo's seven days, the form of the previous life and its appearances arise; for the latter three and a half days, the form of the subsequent life and its appearances arise; and from the moment the first three and a half days end, one knows that one has died and is abiding in the bardo. However, these claims have no pure source and no other pure proof, so they are mere fabrications. The meaning of the word 'bardo' is, as the *Treasury of Knowledge* states: 'Here, that which occurs between dying and being born into a state of existence.' This refers to the state between dying and not yet taking birth in the next existence. Therefore, there is no bardo state other than birth, death, and bardo; the bardo itself is a state of existence. However, if someone asks, 'What is the meaning of explaining the present moment from birth to death as the birth-death bardo, the moment from falling asleep to waking up as the dream bardo, and the moment from death to not yet taking birth in the next existence as the existence bardo?' This is because in the excellent instructions of the *Guhyasamaja*, the manifestation of clear light through the sequence of the four emptinesses is done in the manner of the process of dying; the practice of the illusory sambhogakaya is done in the manner of experiencing the bardo; and the holding of the gross nirmanakaya body by the subtle sambhogakaya is done in the manner of taking birth. For those who do not possess the key instructions, the ordinary three stages of birth, death, and bardo will occur; but for the yogi who possesses the key instructions, initially the three kayas of the path will appear, and ultimately the three kayas of the result will manifest. Based on the similarity and connection, the three kayas of the path are labeled with the names of the three dharmas of the ground, and vice versa. These have a full basis and have been explained extensively elsewhere. Therefore, --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

When in the waking state, practicing the illusory body is like practicing the bardo. Therefore, in this situation, the name 'bardo' is also used. Similarly, after the clear light of sleep, there is a method of practicing the dream illusory body like the bardo. Therefore, dreams are also called 'bardo'. For special individuals, after the clear light of death, transforming what would have been the bardo state into the sambhogakaya. Therefore, considering this, it is called bardo. Therefore, although it seems that three bardos are being discussed, it seems that very few people understand the purpose of discussing these. Whatever form of transforming the three bases into the three kayas of the path, it seems that it is only mixed with the three that ultimately arise: birth, death, and bardo. Therefore, the illusory body of the waking state, the illusory body of the dream state, and the illusory body practiced as a substitute for the bardo, if one can practice these like the base bardo, then in the waking state, through the practice of tummo, the life force enters the central channel, producing the power of the three states of abiding, fixing, and dissolving, thereby gradually manifesting the four emptinesses or the four joys. This is like how, at the time of death, the breath and consciousness gradually enter the central channel, thereby manifesting the clear light of death. The three methods of practicing the clear light of the waking state, the clear light of the sleep state, and the clear light of the death state, all must manifest the four emptinesses in the same way as the stages of the breath and consciousness dissolving into the central channel in the base death process. This must be understood. If one understands these three parts, then one must also understand that in the waking state, after the subtle illusory body, one obtains the gross nirmanakaya; at the time when the dream is about to end, the subtle sambhogakaya obtains the gross nirmanakaya; and after the clear light of death, the sambhogakaya that arises as a substitute for the bardo obtains the gross nirmanakaya. However, it seems difficult to have doubts about how these operate. Therefore, one should investigate thoroughly. If one understands in this way, then death is the dharmakaya, bardo is the sambhogakaya, and rebirth is the nirmanakaya. The mixing of these three, each can become three mixes, so in total there are three mixes, and separately there are nine mixes. One will understand these supreme ways of mixing. If not, some mix desire with the three powers, mix ignorance with clear light, and mix hatred with the illusory body. This way of mixing is based on transforming the three powers into true power, thereby leading the path of light... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
