Even if clinging and other things occur, in reality, from the Bodhicitta abandonment spoken of by glorious Śrīcakrasaṃvara (Tibetan: དཔལ་མཆོག), as well as the defamation of signs, the defamation of Dharma, tormenting oneself with asceticism, abandoning the vajra bell and mudra, these three, as well as the defamation of the guru, a total of eight. In the Top Tantra (Tibetan: རྩེ་མོ་), it speaks of abandoning faith in the Three Jewels. From the Mayajala (Tibetan: སྒྱུ་འཕྲུལ་དྲ་བ་), it speaks of scolding the Vajra Dharma, loving the malicious, and abandoning love for sentient beings. The fourteen spoken of in the Condensed Compendium are divulging secrets and transgressing the words of the Sugata. Furthermore, from the ten root downfalls of Anuttarayoga, the first eight, as well as the uncommon aspects of the tenth, the fifth is abandoning refuge, abandoning the three of vajra bell and mudra, as well as defaming signs, a total of five. The second part is identifying the basis for generating downfalls and summarizing the categories of downfalls. The first part is: having received the Anuttarayoga empowerment vows and not having degenerated, and the mind abiding in its own nature. The second part is divided into the category of defeats and the category of gross offenses, or the two types of root and branch offenses. The first part includes the name and meaning of the scripture, as well as explaining the scripture with a name. The second part includes the actions of entering the explanation, establishing the explanation itself, and completing the explanation. The first part includes the two parts of homage and vowing to compose. The first part is: for the object that is pure in every way, it is always pure, therefore it is called 'pure'. Bowing to the lotus feet with reverence, although not actually present, bowing with reverence. The second part is: one should understand through what is said and avoiding self-created faults, as well as various necessities. The second part, establishing the explanation itself, includes the method of not being defiled by the root downfalls, and the method of rectifying if defiled. The first part includes identifying the root downfalls, generating the desire to protect, and the actual method of protecting. The first part has ten, the first of which includes the actual and similar parts. The first part includes the naming of the downfall and the way of becoming a downfall. The first part is: in the eighteenth chapter of the Yamāntaka-raktayamāri-tantra (Tibetan: གཤིན་རྗེའི་གཤེད་དམར་གྱི་རྒྱུད) and the fifteenth chapter of the Pañjara-tantra (Tibetan: གུར་གྱི་), it is called 'the root downfall of defamation', in the Kālacakra (Tibetan: དུས་འཁོར་) it is called 'the root downfall of disturbing the mind', and what is said here as 'attainment' and so on. The second part includes quoting other views and establishing reasonable views. The first part includes what is said in the Vimalaprabhā (Tibetan: རྒྱ་ཆེར་འགྲེལ་) and so on, as well as the six branches established by Dārikapa (Tibetan: དཱ་རི་ཀ་བ་): considering the guru to be sacred, considering the guru to be displeased, doing it driven by afflictions, not for oneself. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Considering the one who commits faults is a student, being displeased with the student's faults. If one knows that the guru is displeased and is displeased as well, even if displeased, one should think of the guru; even knowing this, if one is overwhelmed by strong afflictions and is powerless, then there is no root downfall. Even if one is focused on one's own benefit, if it is combined with the benefit of others, there is no root downfall, therefore 'not for the benefit of others' is specifically mentioned. The thought of wanting to repent again is that mere regret is not enough, one must immediately want to confess. The second part includes: the object upon which one relies to incur a downfall; the manner in which one relies on it to incur a downfall; and the reason for it. The first part includes: the characteristics of a guru; and the discernment of ambiguities. The first part is: becoming a guru through association with Secret Mantra Vajrayana. The second part is: empowerment, explanation of tantras, and bestowal of oral instructions, these three. The third part is the discernment of ambiguities regarding reliance on tantras, reliance on number, and reliance on degree. The first part is: Guru, is it necessary to be associated with only the Unsurpassed Yoga Tantra as a necessary condition? Answer: No, association with any of the four classes of tantras is also sufficient. The second part is: Is it necessary to have all three? Answer: Explaining the tantra alone is also sufficient. The third part is: Is it necessary to explain the entire tantra, etc.? Answer: No, because the general classifications of gurus are: entrusting the Dharma into one's hand, explaining oral instructions, bestowing empowerment, and performing actions. As it is said, merely explaining a single verse of tantra, bestowing recitation, giving some oral instructions on deity meditation, merely bestowing the empowerment of awareness, and merely teaching some mudras and mandala rituals are also sufficient. The second part is: What actions towards the guru cause a root downfall? Answer: Disrespect, slander, and contempt. The extent of it is: considering the guru as a supreme field of merit to be served with reverence through the three doors of body, speech, and mind. The third part is the reason: because it is said that all attainments are obtained by following the Vajra Guru, therefore, it is for this reason. If it is said that any guru previously associated with Secret Mantra is considered an object of root downfall, then because there is no certainty of attaining accomplishments from all of them, the reason is insufficient. Moreover, gurus like Śāntipa, who have only received empowerment, are called Vajra Gurus, and in the *Fifty Verses on the Guru*, the characteristics of a guru are described as fourteen qualities such as being steadfast and disciplined. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
