‘Knowing the combination,’ meaning Eliminating obstacles through the combination of mantras and medicines, this is Kunying's explanation. In the thirty-second chapter of the Vajra Dakini Sequence, regarding the explanation of ‘knowing the combination,’ Bhavabhadra says: ‘Mantras are eight syllables, etc. Tantras are various medicines. Combination is action. Knowing is being skilled.’ It means that through mantras and substances, knowing how to accomplish their respective actions, such as pacification, etc. Having compassion means having great compassion for sentient beings, wishing them to be free from suffering. Being skilled in treatises means, as the Vajra Tent says: ‘Skilled in all fields of knowledge.’ For example, understanding inner knowledge (philosophy), i.e., the Tripitaka, etc. The ‘Ten Realities’ refers to what is said in the last chapter of the Anuttarayoga Tantra, the Vajra Heart Ornament: ‘The two rituals of reversal, the secret and wisdom of knowledge, the ritual of combining separation, the torma (offering), the recitation of the vajra, the ritual of fierce accomplishment, the blessing and the accomplishment of the mandala, are the ten secret realities. The mandala, samadhi, mudra, posture, standing manner, sitting posture, recitation and repetition, fire offering, offering, activities and actions, and the manner of retraction, are the ten external realities.’ Here, the secret inner ten realities and the external ten realities are discussed. Among them, the two reversals refer to visualizing the ten wrathful deities, etc., to reverse, or reversing by writing and wearing, etc. Although the secret and wisdom knowledge initiations are not mentioned, for those who have received the secret initiation and the vase initiation, the initiation symbolizes the vase initiation, and the third symbolizes the fourth, so they are summarized together. All four initiations are discussed in the ‘Ten Realities.’ Combining separation refers to separating the enemy from the protector, thereby realizing manifest actions. Torma refers to the torma of the fifteen protectors, such as the fifteen protectors of the directions. The recitation of the vajra refers to the vajra recitation of mind and speech, and in addition, there are many methods of reciting by mixing mantras, which are described in the ‘Ten Realities.’ Fierce accomplishment refers to, if one has received initiation and has vows and precepts, if one still has not achieved accomplishment after practicing for eighteen months, etc., according to the sadhana, then one uses fierce methods, striking the deity with a vajra dagger. Blessing refers to understanding its meaning, and the accomplishment of the mandala refers to accomplishing the mandala that arises in front, and offering and praising it, entering into it to receive initiation and permission. Detailed information can be found in the ‘Ten Realities.’ --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The ten realities mandala (དེ་ཉིད་བཅུའི་དཀྱིལ་འཁོར།) externally refers to the mandala with form and without form. Samadhi (ཏིང་ངེ་འཛིན་ནི།) is the yoga of the deity, beginning with the initial union, etc. Mudra (ཕྱག་རྒྱ་ནི།) is the mudra that expands the deity, etc. The four, posture, sitting posture, activity, and withdrawal, are respectively right extension, etc., Vajra posture, etc., guarding and inviting, etc., and offering praises, etc., preceded by requesting to descend. The teacher Rabzhi Shenyen (རབ་ཞི་བཤེས་གཉེན།) explains this in the commentary on the Net of Illusion (སྒྱུ་འཕྲུལ་དྲ་བ།). Kunzhing (ཀུན་སྙིང་།) explains activity as the activity of pacification, etc., and the other three have the same meaning. Recitation, etc., the remaining three are easy to understand. The ten realities mentioned last in the order of the Net of Illusion are also the same as the latter ten categories. Thus, if one is a Vajra Acharya (རྡོ་རྗེ་སློབ་དཔོན།) of the lower tantras, one must understand the latter ten categories; if one is a Vajra Acharya of the Anuttara tantras, one must be proficient in the first ten realities. One who is skilled in drawing mandalas refers to one who is skilled in drawing with lines or colors, etc. The Net of Illusion says: 'Stable, gentle, and wise, patient, upright, and without deceit, knowing the practices of the secret mantra tantras, one should engage in the work of drawing mandalas.' Knowing all ten realities, bestowing fearlessness upon all beings, always rejoicing in the Great Vehicle, is said to be the Acharya.' This is a summary of the scripture. 'Knowing the union of mantras,' in the revised edition, it is 'the Acharya who is skilled in explaining mantras,' which is easier to understand, referring to one who is skilled in explaining the path of mantras to others. Extreme joy refers to 'always rejoicing in the Great Vehicle' as the scripture says, having extreme reverence and firm joy for the Great Vehicle in general and especially the Mantra Vehicle. Taming the senses refers to guarding the senses with mindfulness and awareness, cutting off distractions to perverse objects. In short, these points can be summarized as: having great compassion, having unwavering faith in the Great Vehicle, being proficient in the common and uncommon treatises, being extremely skilled in guiding disciples, guarding against the misdeeds of the three doors and taming the senses. A disciple with wisdom should regard as a teacher one who possesses these five qualities. The eighth chapter of the Vajra Tent Tantra also says: 'The Vajra Acharya with qualities, the mantra taught by him, will lead the practitioner to accomplishment.' Steadfast and profound... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
