Collection of Teachings by Master Tsongkhapa JTs12 A Commentary on the Fifty Verses on the Guru: Fulfilling All the Hopes of Disciples 1-12-1a ༄༅། །A Commentary on the Fifty Verses on the Guru: Fulfilling All the Hopes of Disciples ༄། །Preparatory Activities for the Explanation ༄༅། །A Commentary on the Fifty Verses on the Guru: Fulfilling All the Hopes of Disciples 1-12-1b Sanskrit Romanization: Namo Guru Mañjughoṣāya, Literal Chinese meaning: Homage to the Guru, the Gentle Voice). Though being the father of all Buddhas, He appears as a youthful prince; Though breathing life into beings with gentle speech, He terrifies the hosts of demons; Though always abiding above all, He serves as a servant to beings; May the wondrous deeds of Mañjughoṣa (Gentle Voice) always protect us! If one relies upon him properly, all good qualities, Are easily bestowed, he is the only door. I shall explain, as much as I am able, the fifty verses on how to rely on the holy spiritual friend. As it is said in the first chapter of the King of Tantras, the Net of Magical Illusion: 'Firstly, the attainment of accomplishments depends on following the teacher; If there is no teacher, then one will not attain accomplishments. Therefore, the qualities of a teacher should be explained.' Thus, since the root of both supreme and common accomplishments depends on properly relying on the holy spiritual friend, I shall explain this text called 'Fifty Verses on the Guru,' which teaches the methods of relying on the guru in fifty verses. This explanation has three parts: preparatory activities for the explanation, presenting the explanation itself, and concluding activities for the explanation. The first has two parts: paying homage and making a commitment to compose. The first is shown by the words, 'Having paid homage to the lotus feet of the glorious Vajrasattva, who is the source of attaining the state of Vajrasattva.' 'Paid homage' is the direct meaning. To whom is homage paid? To the lotus feet of the guru, which shows great respect by taking the lowest part of the body. How is homage paid? 'As it is' means in accordance with how homage is paid with the three doors in the scriptures. What kind of guru is he? 'Glorious' and so forth. As it is said in the seventh chapter of the first section of the Vajra Tent Tantra: 'Śrī (吉祥) is non-dual wisdom.' The guru is the source of attaining the state or rank of Vajrasattva, possessing the glory of non-dual wisdom as his very nature. Vajrasattva is explained in the Sixteen Vajra Pinnacle Mind Disciples: 'Why is he Vajrasattva?' 1-12-2b What is Vajrasattva? --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As the scripture says, 'The supreme wisdom of Bodhi is indeed the truth of Vajra. That which is born from the wisdom Vajra is the Vajrasattva.' Therefore, the supreme of the three Bodhis (referring to Dharmakaya, Sambhogakaya, and Nirmanakaya) is the wisdom of Dharmakaya, which is inseparable from emptiness, and this wisdom is Vajra. And the Rupakaya born from this Vajra is the hero, which is the Vajrasattva. Second, the word 'that' here is to introduce the remainder, so what is to be done next? As the 'Immaculate Tantra' says: 'This brief explanation, please listen with reverence.' Therefore, 'that' refers to the method of relying on the guru to be explained next, so please listen with great reverence, not just listening. Avoid making your own decisions: If the method of relying on the guru is just your own idea, it is not enough to be convincing. You may wonder, what are you talking about? Know that these are all said in many immaculate tantras, so you should believe them. As for which tantras it comes from, it will be explained later. In that case, it is enough to learn from those tantras, isn't it redundant for you to write these? Although those tantras do have them, the content is very complicated, the order is reversed, and they are scattered everywhere. Therefore, I will briefly summarize, organize and explain here, so it is not redundant. This is to eliminate the doubts of those who think that the 'Fifty Verses' and the tantras have been repeated, so there is no need to write these anymore. Next is a detailed explanation. The second part is a detailed explanation, which is divided into three aspects: the method of relying on the guru, the time to explain the method of relying on, and how to make oneself a qualified vessel after the explanation. The method of relying on the guru. The first part is divided into three aspects: a general introduction to the method of relying on, the particularity of the method of relying on, and a summary of the main points of the method of relying on. A general introduction to the method of relying on. The first part is divided into two aspects: the actual content and the incidental content. The actual content. The first part is divided into two aspects: a brief introduction to the method of relying on the guru and a detailed explanation. A brief introduction to the method of relying on the guru. The first part is divided into three aspects: the rationality of respecting the guru, the way to practice the method of respect, and the observation of the object and support of respect. The rationality of respecting the guru. The first point is: 'The Vajra Guru who bestows empowerment, matures [disciples], and [grants] supreme attainment, is actually the Tathagata. They are constantly present in every corner of the ten directions, therefore I pay homage to them with the utmost respect in the three times of past, present and future.' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
