Although there are three types of empowerment: the empowerment of the path, and the empowerment of the fruit of liberation, here it refers to the first, because it is the time when disciples attend and respect the master who has received the ripening empowerment. 'Supreme' means completely pure, that is, the empowerment conferred as stated in the tantras. The Vajra master who obtains this, as stated in the fifth Spica of 'Nectar Sprigs of Instructions': 'Vajra is the mind of enlightenment, and by its nature it shows the conduct of the world and beyond the world, that is the Vajra master, that is the Lama.' Just as it is said. For that master, even the Tathagatas who dwell in the ten directions, such as the east, and who have truly realized Suchness, will come to prostrate themselves in the three junctures of the first early morning, noon, and the last afternoon, what more need be said of other disciples? This is to show the reason why one must respect the Lama. This is from the seventeenth chapter of the Glorious Guhyasamaja: 'Son of lineage, in short, in the realms of the ten directions, all the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas who abide and protect, all of them will descend in the three times, and all the Tathagatas will truly worship that master with offerings, and go to that Buddha-field, uttering the letters of Vajra speech. 'We are the fathers of all the Tathagatas!' up to 'We are the teachers of all the Tathagatas!' etc.' This is a summary of what was said, and it is also said in the tenth chapter of the Order of the Net of Illusion. Chandrakirti, Cilupa, Shantipa, Vimalamitra and many other wise and accomplished ones have also made literal explanations in their commentaries, which seems to be consistent with the views of the author of the Fiftieth Stanza, so here we are following their views. If the Tathagatas also attend and respect the master, what more need be said of other disciples? This is to emphasize the reason why one must be extremely respectful. In the great commentary on the Glorious Kalachakra, there are two explanations, direct and indirect, for the verse 'Empowerment Supreme', and the meaning of the Tathagata is explained differently, although these two are the same text, the occasions are different, here it refers to, as mentioned before, the novice disciple requesting empowerment from whom. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The reason for showing utmost respect to the guru is that if one were to explain it with other explanations of the Tathagata (如来,Tathagata, Thus Gone One), it would not be appropriate. In general, each Vajra word of the Tantra has many different explanations, so there is no contradiction. It is also not the case that Buddhas (佛,Buddha, Awakened One) consider it inappropriate to prostrate to a guru who possesses all the qualities, because in the *Intimate Entourage of Reality* it says: 'Sons who possess qualities destroy samsara (轮回,samsara, cyclic existence). They always show the pure realms of their own bodies. That is the guru, the glorious guru, not another guru. Countless Buddhas always worship him. Buddhas and Bodhisattvas (菩萨,Bodhisattva, enlightenment being) abiding in all directions always prostrate to him.' Also, in the *Collected Sutras* it says: 'Ananda (阿难陀,Ananda, the name of one of the Buddha's foremost disciples), if a Bodhisattva (菩萨,Bodhisattva, enlightenment being) is in a chariot, enjoying the pleasures of the five senses, and there is no one else to drive the chariot, then Ananda, that Bodhisattva's chariot can even be placed on the head of the Tathagata (如来,Tathagata, Thus Gone One).' This is similar in reasoning to the quoted *Heap of Jewels Sutra*. **The Manner of Cultivating Reverence** Secondly, the manner of cultivating reverence has two parts: a general explanation of the manner of serving and honoring, and a specific explanation. The first part is: 'With utmost faith, in the three times, with mandala (坛城,mandala, sacred diagram) flowers and joined palms, serve and honor the teacher, and prostrate with the crown of your head to his feet.' That is to say, in the three times, such as in the morning, serve and honor the guru who shows you the path of Vajrayana (金刚乘,Vajrayana, Diamond Vehicle) by touching his feet with the crown of your head in prostration. Is it just a daily prostration? No, first offer the mandala (坛城,mandala, sacred diagram), that is, arrange a collection of flowers, and then prostrate with joined palms. Here, in the *Changing Sutra* it says: 'With mandala (坛城,mandala, sacred diagram) flowers and joined palms, prostrate with the crown of your head to his feet, serve and honor the teacher.' It is good to say it like this. Moreover, it should be done with utmost faith, that is, initiated by great, pure faith. The second part is: If you yourself are ordained, and the Vajra (金刚,Vajra, Diamond/Thunderbolt) master is a householder, or if you yourself are fully ordained, and the master is ordained but not fully ordained, a novice, should you serve and honor them as described earlier? The sutra says: 'For a householder or a novice, in order to avoid worldly scorn, place the Dharma (法,Dharma, the teachings of the Buddha) etc. in front, and prostrate with devotion, holding to ascetic practices.' That is to say, if you yourself are ordained and the master is a householder, etc., in order to avoid worldly scorn, you should avoid direct physical contact, but rather place Dharma (法,Dharma, the teachings of the Buddha) objects such as scriptures in front to show respect. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
