In the usual occasions of prostration, etc., placing the scriptures, etc. (the 'etc.' includes images of Buddha, etc.) in front, one prostrates to them with the body, and prostrates to the Lama (Guru) in the mind. If directly prostrating with the body would cause worldly people to slander the Dharma, in order to avoid this, one should not do so; if there is no slander, one may do so. 'Holding the discipline' refers to guarding the precepts of ordination here, i.e., the training of a novice monk (dge tshul, Bhiksu), etc. If someone thinks that not directly prostrating to a lay teacher with the body means that all service and offerings are not done, then, It is said: 'Providing seats and rising, Handling affairs, etc., are service and offerings. Those who hold the discipline should do all, Avoid prostration and impure conduct.' Avoid prostrating with the five limbs and impure conduct; apart from these, the disciple who holds the discipline should do all service and offerings. What are these service and offerings? They are providing seats for the Lama, rising to greet them in advance, helping the Lama with necessary tasks, offering wealth, etc. In the commentary on the Hevajra Tantra, it is said that even for the teacher who is a layperson or a novice monk (dge tshul), one should serve and offer by providing seats, etc., but should not serve and offer by prostrating and washing feet, etc. Not prostrating refers to situations other than teaching the Dharma; when teaching the Dharma, one should place the scriptures, etc., in front and prostrate, as the Bhagavan (Blessed One) said in the Tantras. In the Vimalaprabha, these two scriptures are also explained in the same way. In the commentary on the Hevajra Tantra, it is said that for a Bhiksu Vajradhara's teacher, even if the monastic seniority is lower, all service and offerings such as prostration should be done. Regarding this, the Sravaka school of the Vaibhasika school argues that the Mahayana Vinaya says that ordained people can prostrate to some laypeople, and that the objects of prostration are limited to the teacher and those with higher monastic seniority than oneself, which contradicts the Vinaya, and therefore considers Mahayana not to be the Buddha's words. To refute this view, many sutras are cited to prove that ordained people can prostrate to lay Bodhisattvas, and this is finally determined through debate, which is described in detail in the Tarka-jvala. Therefore, in general, it is not that a Bhiksu cannot prostrate to a teacher such as a lay Vajradhara, but doing so is likely to harm the root of the teachings—the discipline of the Vinaya—so to avoid this, prostration is not performed. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It is said that in some places, if there is something to be prohibited, then offerings should be made in those places. Even if there is a Vajra-holding monk, a Vajra-holding householder should not be regarded as a lama. This is stated in 'Vimalaprabha' (Stainless Light), because of the great respect for the Vinaya (discipline), with the intention of relying on it to make the teachings last long. Some great Vajra masters say that householders and novices are not Vajra masters before the time of discernment, otherwise it contradicts what was said earlier that even the Buddhas should prostrate to the guru. This is not reasonable, because this is a special instruction for superiors when a major prohibition is needed, and if it is not applied to the Vajra master, it will lead to confusion of the occasion. Third, examining the object of reverence and the basis. It is divided into two parts: the reasons for examining each other; and the manner of abandoning and adopting after examination. First, the reasons for examining each other. So, should the relationship between the guru, who is the object of reverence, and the disciple, who is the one who reveres, be established without examination or after examination? It is said in the scriptures: 'Guru and disciple, both will break vows equally, the hero should first, examine the relationship between teacher and student.' Here, 'hero' refers to both the giver and receiver of the blessings of Vajrayana. Before receiving the blessings of Vajrayana, the giver should also examine whether the receiver is a suitable vessel, and the receiver should also examine whether the giver possesses the qualities. Through this way, they should examine whether it is appropriate to establish a relationship with each other. If a relationship is established casually without examination, then by teaching secrets to those who are not vessels, the guru will break the vows, and the disciple will not be able to keep the vows they have taken, so they will also break the vows. Therefore, both will break the vows equally, so it is necessary to examine. If it is seen during the examination that the other party does not possess the qualities of a vessel, then the secret teachings should not be taught. As it is said in the 'Tantra of the Vajra Garland': 'If the milk of a lion, should not be placed in an earthen vessel, likewise, the great yoga, should not be given to non-vessels.' Seeing that the fault of giving empowerment casually without examination is great, the scripture says: 'One should examine for twelve years.' This means that if one cannot quickly understand whether the other person is a vessel, one should examine for a long time.
