All actions of unethical behavior similar to worldly activities, and all thoughts of 'Is this okay?' based on one's own judgment, should be abandoned. Not Allowing Freedom: Eighth, not allowing freedom has four aspects: seeking permission when engaging in activities for others; dedicating the gains from participation; not appropriating others' service in the presence of the lama; and behaving with utmost respect in body and speech. The first point is: 'Consecration of mandalas and fire offerings, gathering disciples and teaching, if the lama resides in that place, do not do them without permission.' This means that for consecration, mandalas, empowerment, fire offerings, gathering disciples, and teaching the Dharma, if the lama resides in that place, one should request permission, and only do them if the lama grants permission; otherwise, one should not do them. If the lama is not in that place, then there is no need to request permission. The second point is: 'Whatever is gained from opening the eyes, etc., offer all of it to the lama. Having taken what is offered, the lama should give to others as they please.' 'Opening the eyes' is another name for the consecration ceremony. Whatever benefits are gained from performing consecration and empowerment, etc., should all be offered to one's lama. As translated by Chag Lotsawa, 'The lama takes whatever he desires from it,' meaning the lama takes whatever he wants from the offering made by the disciple, and the disciple can freely enjoy the remainder. The third point is: 'The lama's disciple is not one's own disciple, nor should one teach one's own disciple in the lama's presence. Service, rising, and prostrations, etc., should all be prevented.' This means that one should not make the lama's disciple one's own disciple, nor should one teach the Dharma to one's own disciple in the presence of the lama. Regarding not making the lama's disciple one's own disciple, some Panditas say that if doing so would cause the disciple to serve only oneself and reduce service to the lama, then one should not accept them as a disciple; this is Ronggo Shedang Dorje's view. However, according to pure treatises, because of the word 'also' in 'one's own disciple should also not be taught in the lama's presence,' it means that the lama's disciple should not be treated as a disciple in the lama's presence. If one's own disciple appears to be offering clothes, rising, prostrating, etc., in the lama's presence, one should prevent them from doing so. The fourth point is: 'Whatever is offered to the teacher, and whatever the lama bestows, the intelligent one should respectfully bow and receive with both hands.' This means that whatever is offered to the teacher, and whatever the lama bestows, the intelligent disciple should respectfully bow and receive with both hands, with joy and faith. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Not only should one be humble, but whatever the lama gives, it should be received with both hands in a respectful manner. The 'Change' says: 'One should humbly receive with both hands, the wise should receive with humility.' This is correct. The 'Sambhuṭa' says: 'Whatever is given, one should prostrate and then receive.' Therefore, when receiving something given, one should prostrate. Incidental Meaning: Secondly, the incidental meaning is: 'Memory without forgetting, diligence in one's own conduct, brothers exceeding their own conduct, joyfully correct each other.' It means that one should not forget one's own vows, which symbolizes that with undiminished awareness, one should be diligent in one's own actions of body, speech, and mind, i.e., the precepts of Vajradhara, thereby correcting brothers, i.e., fellow practitioners of the same guru, who exceed their own conduct of precepts, so that they do not violate the precepts. Moreover, with a joyful mind, help each other, i.e., become Dharma companions to each other. The 'Change' translates as: 'Memory without forgetting.' This explains how to treat fellow practitioners while explaining how to rely on the guru. Special Exceptions: Secondly, the special exception is: 'A sick person's guru affairs, respectfully without permission, if forbidden actions are performed, a virtuous person has no sin.' This indicates that there is no fault for a sick person. That is to say, for actions such as despising, slandering the guru, or disturbing the guru's mind, there can be no permission for any reason. However, for simple precepts such as 'bed, seat, and precedence,' permission can be granted depending on the circumstances of a sick person. Even if a sick person wants to respectfully complete the tasks of serving the guru, but cannot do so due to illness, or sits in front of the guru without a bed, if these forbidden actions are performed, a person with a very kind heart will not incur sin or transgression. Then, is it necessary to ask the guru for permission for these situations? No, because there is no fault in doing it even without permission, so there is no need to ask for permission. The 'Change' translates as: 'Sick and guru affairs, respectfully with permission, if forbidden actions are performed, a virtuous person has no transgression.' According to this translation, even if one is not sick, for some simple precepts, if one obtains the guru's permission, one can be without fault. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
