Therefore, go before the teacher and prostrate to the Thus-Gone Ones! How to Treat the Teacher's Possessions and Entourage? Fourth, how to treat the teacher's possessions and entourage: The teacher's possessions are like life itself; cherish them as you would the teacher. The teacher's entourage is like relatives; always regard them with equanimity. As it is said, treat the teacher's possessions as you would protect your own life, striving to safeguard them from harm. Not only should you respect the teacher, but also respect the teacher's children, consorts, and so on, as you would the teacher. Towards the teacher's entourage and attendants, show affection as you would to relatives, and with a single-pointed mind, always regard them with equanimity. How to Purify Immediate Conduct? Fifth, purifying immediate conduct is divided into three points: refraining from inappropriate conduct, adopting appropriate conduct, and demonstrating other ways to prevent inappropriate conduct. The first point is further divided into two parts: behaviors to avoid in plain sight, and behaviors to avoid within earshot. The first part is: Do not sit on a cushion, do not walk in front of the teacher, do not wear a headdress, do not sit down before the teacher, do not place your feet on the cushion, do not put your hands on your hips or rub your body. When the teacher is standing, do not lie down or sit. Always be ready to serve the teacher and strive to do so perfectly. Do not spit or discard other filth, do not stretch your legs on the cushion, do not argue or speak loudly; these should not be done in front of the teacher. Do not rub your limbs, dance, sing, or play music. This is explained in three and a half verses. ‘Do not sit on a cushion’ in front of the teacher—this only prohibits sitting on a cushion, not general sitting. When walking, do not walk in front of the teacher. The *Vajra Heart Ornament Tantra* says: ‘Do not walk in front, do not stretch your legs; these should not be done.’ ‘Wearing a headdress’ refers to wrapping the head with a cloth; this should not be done in front of the teacher. The fourteenth chapter of the *Vajra Heart Ornament Tantra* says: ‘Do not wrap the head, do not carry weapons or sticks; these should not be done in front of the teacher.’ ‘Placing your feet on the cushion’ means that when sitting down, do not sit on the cushion before the teacher, and if the teacher is sitting on the ground, do not sit on a cushion; these should not be done. ‘Do not put your hands on your hips or rub your body’; the Sanskrit translation, ‘Do not put your hands by your side,’ is more appropriate, as the prohibition against rubbing limbs will be explained below. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

One should not slouch or act improperly in the presence of the guru (bla ma, teacher). As it says in the scriptures, 'When the guru rises or sits, one should not lie down or sit.' When the guru rises, one should not lie down or sit; when the guru sits, one should not lie down. One should always be ready to serve the guru, be skilled in rising and other actions, and accomplish all tasks perfectly. One should not discard saliva, mucus, phlegm, or other impurities in the presence of the guru. One should not stretch out one's legs or cross them while sitting on a cushion, and one should not argue or engage in verbal sparring. Unless it is during a tsokhor (gathering) or other special occasion, one should not caress one's limbs, dance, sing, or play music in the presence of the guru. Secondly, as the scripture says, 'Many idle talks, should not be spoken near the hearer.' One should not engage in loud and frivolous conversations within earshot of the guru. Most of the content from 'saliva' to 'should not be spoken near' comes from the 'Oral Transmission Vajra Garland.' The 'Vajra Essence Ornament Tantra' also says, 'Clapping and coarse language, should not be done where they can be heard.' Secondly, act according to reason: 'Bow and rise from the seat, sit down with respect. At night, crossing dangerous roads, go ahead after receiving instructions.' When rising from or sitting on a seat, one should do so with respectful conduct; 'bowing' is also a respectful gesture. When traveling at night, crossing a river, or traveling on a dangerous road, one should first ask the guru for permission and proceed only after receiving the instruction 'you go first.' This is an exception to the rule 'one should not go first.' The 'Vajra Essence Ornament Tantra' says, 'At night and when crossing a river, and in dangerous places, in order to obtain instructions, going ahead is not a fault.' Thirdly, prohibit improper behavior and demonstrate other behaviors: 'In front of the teacher, the intelligent student should not twist his body or lean on a pillar, nor should he count on his fingers.' In front of the guru, an intelligent disciple should not twist his body, should not lean against a pillar or wall, and should not count on his fingers. The 'Essence Ornament' says, 'Flexing fingers and stretching legs,' therefore, one should not stretch or flex one's fingers. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
