'The Guru and the Vajradhara, should not be regarded as different.' Thus it is said, the Guru is the field for accumulating merit, and is no different from all the Buddhas, therefore, qualified disciples should not regard the Vajra Guru and the Vajradhara as different, but should believe that he is the Vajradhara. A qualified disciple is one who, for the root of the Mahayana - compassion, and for his own body, enjoyment and merits, abandons the mind of clinging for his own benefit, and dedicates it to sentient beings, and the precepts of pure vows, and the virtues of patience that do not tire of the evil deeds and ascetic practices of sentient beings. Seeing the Guru as the Buddha is mentioned in many tantras. For example, in the seventeenth chapter of the Guhyasamaja Tantra, it says: 'Bhagavan, how should all the Tathagatas and Bodhisattvas regard the Guru who has been empowered by the Vajra secret, the secret assembly, of the body, speech, and mind of all the Tathagatas? Son of lineage, all the Tathagatas and Bodhisattvas should regard the mind of enlightenment as Vajra. Why? The Guru is equal to the mind of enlightenment and is inseparable.' The Guhyasamaja empowerment mentioned here also represents the empowerment of other tantras, and the empowerment also represents other Vajra Gurus. The Bodhicitta Vajra is a name of Vajradhara. In Cilupa's commentary on the Guhyasamaja Tantra, it says: 'There is no difference between the two.' This means that the Dharmakaya of the Bodhicitta Vajra can generate the Sambhogakaya, and its Nirmanakaya abides in the state where it does not turn into the path of seeing, and abides in that body, purifying the karmic obscurations of others. Thus, at a time like now when it is impossible to see the Buddha directly, the Buddhas reside in the body of the Vajra Guru and perform the work of benefiting sentient beings. The necessity of seeing the Guru as inseparable from the Buddha lies in generating equal faith in the Vajradhara and the Guru, stabilizing the pride of the Vajradhara, and accumulating merit with little effort, for the purpose of quick accomplishment. Shantipa said this in his commentary on the Guhyasamaja Tantra. Vajradhara, for the benefit of sentient beings, manifests as an ordinary person and takes the form of a Guru, as stated in the fifteenth chapter of the Guruvajrapanjara Tantra: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6b

It is said: 'That which is Vajrasattva (Tibetan: རྡོ་རྗེ་སེམས་དཔའ།), is the form of the Guru. With the aim of benefiting sentient beings, he abides in an ordinary form.' One should view the Lama as the five Buddha families (symbolizing five types of wisdom), and increase the mind of thinking about virtues. Towards the mind of finding faults, one should increase the mind of restraint. If one examines from the perspective of whatever virtues there are, it becomes the cause of increasing one's own accomplishments; if one examines from the perspective of slight faults, it undoubtedly becomes an obstacle to accomplishments.' As stated in the fourteenth chapter of the 'Vajra Essence Ornament Sutra': 'A disciple who always respects the Lama should view the Lama in this way: The Lama is equal to all Buddhas, he is always Vajradhara (Sanskrit: Vajradhara, the holder of the vajra). He is also the Tathagata Ratnasambhava (Sanskrit: Ratnasambhava, the origin of jewels), he is the great ocean of wisdom, a wish-fulfilling jewel bestowing precious things. One should take all his virtues, and not even think of any faults in the mind. Taking virtues, one obtains accomplishments; faults cause accomplishments to decline.' Thus it is said, and it is also said in the Mayajala. One should especially cultivate restraint towards the mind of finding faults, and if one transgresses, one should confess and restrain oneself. One should repeatedly hold in the mind the aspect of whatever virtues one sees. This is a profound method for cultivating faith focused on the Lama. Viewing the Lama's body as the nature of virtues is described in the thirty-second chapter of the 'Vajra Dakini Tantra': 'The nature body of all Buddhas, the limbs are Bodhisattvas (Sanskrit: Bodhisattva, an enlightened being), the pores are Arhats (Sanskrit: Arhat, a worthy one). The crown of the head is the five Buddha families, worldly beings are the seat under the feet. The rays of light are Yakshas (Sanskrit: Yaksa, a type of spirit) and secrets, etc. Thus, the yogi should always view the body as the nature of virtues.' The first chapter of the secret seat of the 'Four Seats Tantra' also says the same. Therein, all the Buddhas are Vajradhara, and the Lama's body should be viewed as such. The eyes and limbs should be viewed as Ksitigarbha, etc. The pores are the nature of hundreds of thousands of Arhats. The 'Four Seats Tantra' says: 'The head ornament is the five families.' The commentaries also explain it in this way, so the five families are the head ornament. Worldly beings such as Brahma and Mahadeva are the seat under the feet. Yakshas are well-known, and secrets are Kinnaras (Sanskrit: Kinnara, a mythical creature, half-human and half-bird), and the word 'etc.' includes Gandharvas, etc. Thus, in the commentary on the 'Four Seats Tantra', Bhavabhadra said this. The secret mandala of the Guru is Yakshas, etc. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
