The meaning of ྱ་བའི་དོན་ཏེ། (gya wai don te) is that some treatises say: 'Do not straighten the joints of the fingers.' This seems correct. The difference between physical and verbal reverence Sixth, showing the difference between physical and verbal reverence, divided into two parts. The difference in physical reverence is: 'Washing the feet and washing the body, applying fragrance and massage, etc., should be preceded by prostration, and similarly, at the end, it should be done comfortably.' It means that for a simple washing of the Guru's feet, or washing the whole body with water, applying fragrance to the body, or massaging, etc., one should first prostrate with folded hands, that is, prostrate first, and then after doing these things, one should prostrate again. After that, one can engage in activities as one pleases. The difference in verbal reverence is: 'If it is necessary to mention the name, the name should be followed by 'Your Presence'. In order to make others respectful, special words should be spoken.' 1-12-21a It means that if it is necessary to mention the Guru's name, then the name should be followed by 'Your Presence' to express respect. Is that all? No, other words of respect should also be spoken, in order to make others also generate respect for the Guru. For example, if the Guru's name is Rinchen Dorje (རིན་ཆེན་རྡོ་རྗེ།, Rinchen Dorje, Precious Vajra), then one should say 'The Presence of the Venerable Dampa Rinchen Dorje'. In this way, others can be guided to generate respect for the Guru. Chak Lo (ཆག་ལོ།, Chak Lo, translator's name) translates it as: 'Do not say the name briefly, the name should be followed by 'Your Presence', in order to make others respectful, special names should be spoken.' But I think the previous translation is better. Abandoning pride Seventh, abandoning pride, divided into three aspects: abandoning pride when listening to instructions, abandoning pride when listening to Dharma, etc., and abandoning pride in general behavior. The first aspect is: 'To the Guru, one should request instructions, saying 'I will do as instructed', folding hands and not being distracted, listening to the Guru's instructions. For coughing and spitting, etc., one should cover the mouth with the hand. After the work is done, bid farewell with gentle words.' It means that first one should request instructions from the Guru, asking what one should do, and when the Guru instructs to do this and that, the body should fold hands, the mind should not be distracted, listen carefully to the teachings, and after the teachings are finished, one should say 'I will do as you instructed'. Then, after completing the work instructed by the Guru, use very gentle words --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

'To do it this way,' this is the teaching that should be understood. When listening to teachings and at other times, in order to avoid unseemly behaviors such as spitting and making vulgar noises, one should cover the mouth with one's hand. Chag Lotsawa Chökyi Pal said: 'When the lama gives teachings, one should immediately reply: 'The teachings have been given.'' Although some places still do this now, it is best to understand the previous practice. The Vajra Heart Ornament Tantra also says: 'Therefore, at the feet of the lama, guard shame like a bride. Coughing, vulgar noises, spitting, etc., cover the mouth with your hand. Speak extremely softly.' It also says: 'Whatever actions one does, or wants to listen to, etc., in order to grasp the key points, do not unclasp your palms, stand up from your seat, and in a visible place, do not turn your back on the lama.' This means that one should not walk around with one's back turned in the vicinity where the lama can see. Second, 'Sit humbly in front, arrange your clothes, etc., kneel with palms together, and with the desire to listen, etc., make three requests.' This means that a disciple who wants to listen to the Dharma should make three requests when asking for the Dharma. What kind of behavior should one have? In front of the lama, abandon arrogance, sit humbly, wear appropriate clothes, etc., do not let your behavior become unrestrained, arrange your appearance, kneel on the ground, and make requests with palms together. 'Etc.' includes requesting empowerments and vows, etc. Listening to the Dharma is only for the purpose of determining the definition of the Dharma. Third, 'In all acts of service, do not have arrogance in your mind. Feeling shame and fear, with restrained behavior, abide like a new bride. All acts of coquetry, etc., should be abandoned in front of the lama. Other similar actions should also be abandoned after examining them yourself.' This means that, taking what has been said above as an example, in all acts of serving the lama, do not mix arrogance in your mind, because generating arrogance towards a sacred object is a very serious mistake, as stated in the Prajnaparamita Sutra, there will be great faults. Therefore, with respect and shame, feel reverence for the lama, and with extremely restrained behavior, abide like a new bride. All actions aimed at coquetry should be abandoned in front of the lama who guides your path, and in addition to that, other actions that may lead to arrogance and coquetry --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
