In the Vajramala Mandala Ritual, it says, 'For the sake of recitation, mantras should also be given to the disciple.' It is also explained in the Tenth Treatise of Reality, therefore both the master and disciple should practice. In general, no matter which vehicle one enters, the way of relying on the guru is very important, as has been said many times. In particular, for Vajrayana practitioners, all accomplishments come from following the guru, which is strongly emphasized in many tantras. Therefore, the root of the path is the way of relying on the Vajra Master, and one cannot understand these precepts with just a guru yoga session now and then. Therefore, one must strive to master the meaning of this text. After understanding, one must also rely on mindfulness and awareness to strive to protect the vows of Vajradhara. If one does so, faults will gradually decrease, and one will feel regret for transgressing the vows and desire to make amends. In this way, in this life or another, one will soon become skilled in relying on a spiritual friend, like Sudhana and Sadaprarudita, and be able to practice like them. If one does not understand these, or if one understands but does not put on the armor of protection, then these faults, which are easy to arise and numerous, will constantly stain us, causing us to be unable to learn these vows for many lifetimes. Therefore, the wise should regard this text as the supreme instruction of Guru Yoga. Third, explaining how to become a suitable vessel: 'Then, by giving mantras, etc., make them vessels of the Dharma. The fourteen root downfalls should be read and upheld.' This means that after practicing the common stages of the path and learning how to rely on the guru, one can then make the disciple's mind-stream a suitable vessel. So, what kind of vessel should one become? A vessel that can hold the Dharma. The 'Dharma' refers to the well-spoken words of the Buddhas, that is, the precious tantras, and the stages of the path that they explain, becoming a vessel for hearing and practicing these. So, by what method does one become a vessel? 'Mantras, etc.,' In the 'Collected Vows Ritual' it says, 'Then, by giving secret mantras.' Because secret mantras are accomplished through secrecy and concealment, and are not the object of non-vessels, they are secret. 'Mantra,' its Sanskrit is Mantra, composed of 'Man' (mind) and 'tra' (protection), meaning protecting the mind... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In the eighteenth chapter of the Guhyasamāja Tantra, the protector (kyob pa, referring to the deity) says: 'Whatever mind (yid) arises from the conditions of the faculties (dbang po, senses) and objects (yul, objects of perception), that mind is called Man. Tra means to protect.' Although there are many ways to protect the mind, here it specifically refers to protecting the mind through initiation, so it must be made a vessel through the act of bestowing initiation. From what is the mind protected? As Śāntipa said: 'It is called protection because it guards against evil destinies, the suffering of samsara, and the lower vehicles.' Having thus made it a suitable vessel, what should be done first? The first thing to do is to diligently guard the vows (dam tshig) and precepts (sdom pa) received at the time of initiation, so that they do not degenerate. If the precepts are abandoned, then the root of attaining accomplishment will be severed. To then practice the path, teach and listen to the scriptures, etc., is like wanting to build a house without a foundation. Therefore, after receiving initiation, it is necessary to guard oneself from falling into the state of violating vows. The guru should explain the precepts of mantra, and the disciple should understand them. Because before receiving initiation, one cannot fully hear the precepts of mantra. Although there are many precepts, because the root cause of breaking the precepts—the root downfalls (tsa ltung)—is different from others, one must recite the words of the fourteen root downfalls and hold their meaning in mind, and strive greatly to avoid being tainted by the root downfalls. This is like what is said in the Bodhicaryāvatāra: 'One should first read the Sutra of the Essence of Space (Nam mkha'i snying po'i mdo sde ni),' because the root downfalls are explained in that sutra, so after taking the Bodhisattva vows, one must first read this sutra. But this does not mean that other precepts do not need to be learned. Here, those who sincerely wish to study the unsurpassable vehicle, after receiving initiation, must first understand the boundaries of protection, such as the fourteen root downfalls. If they do not protect these boundaries and then practice the path, teach and listen to the scriptures, this behavior is straying from the way of Vajrayana. Therefore, those who wish to benefit themselves should, after receiving initiation, take the protection of vows and precepts as the foundation, and then engage in hearing, contemplating, and meditating on mantra. Third, regarding the act of completing the explanation: Thus, as followers of the guru, disciples: 'Whatever merit I have accumulated from doing this, which benefits all beings without exception and is without fault, may all beings quickly attain Buddhahood!' This fiftieth chapter is for the benefit of limitless beings, for the limitless... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
