When the spark of awareness is ignited, and the senses are lifted into the sky, the nature of mind shines with clear light, and awareness is empowered, then afflictions are pacified. Karma Vajra. As for the obstacles to meditation, they cannot be overcome by someone who is not diligent. The fault of afflictions lies in this: for a meditator, afflictions are as numerous as thieves, arising from the five poisons (greed, hatred, ignorance, pride, and doubt), giving rise to eighty-four thousand afflictions. Therefore, it will not allow you to abide in meditation, but will lead you into samsara. For these, do not be distracted, as if you have lost the only path. Like a poisonous snake appearing in your lap, abandon it, and grasp it with mindfulness, thus practicing the path of seeing. If you do not do this, you will accumulate negative karma in an instant. If you do not want to make such a mistake, do not be separated from the spark of mindfulness, and strive in taking and abandoning. Therefore, until you have gained stability in view and meditation, flee alone like a wounded wild animal. It is crucial to flee from afflictions as if they were poisonous snakes. The fault of agitation has two aspects: agitation of place and agitation of conditions. Agitation of place is: meditating in a high and pure place, awareness becomes clear, but the mind cannot abide, and thoughts wander restlessly. If you let these wanderings go, you will be controlled by afflictions, so use awareness to restrain and focus. If that is not enough, adopt the observation method or view of the Śrāvakayāna. Sometimes, focus the mind on the cushion. At night, like the chakra at the sole of the foot, merge the mind into a black bindu and sleep. If a thought suddenly arises, seize its face and say 'Phaṭ' (藏文:ཕཊ,梵文天城体:फट्,梵文罗马拟音:phaṭ,汉语字面意思:cut). Control the breath, and then release it slowly. Or, chase the thought, and abide in the state of not finding it, thus pacifying the agitation. The second is agitation of conditions: any external condition is seized by the thought, and the mind wanders restlessly in the direction of afflictions. At this time, let go of the idea that 'there is nothing to do,' and practice loving-kindness, compassion, renunciation, skillful means, wisdom, and devotion. Therefore, strive to awaken the path during seeing. The third fault is dullness, which has two aspects: dullness from not understanding and dullness from conditions. The first, dullness from not understanding, is: not understanding how to interrupt meditation, so no matter how long you meditate, there is no effect. Generate wrong views towards the teachings and the guru. Not being able to distinguish between experience, realization, and understanding leads to blind meditation. For this, pray to the guru, generate certainty in the teachings, interrupt meditation, and increase the number of sessions. Do not mix with activities, meditate alone.

Meditate on interruption (འཕྲོ་བཅད།). This cuts off distractions and causes practice to progress further and further. The second type of distraction arises from conditions: being distracted by external conditions, by the appearances of the five poisons (དུག་ལྔ།) and the six consciousnesses (ཚོགས་དྲུག), and being unable to maintain mindfulness due to distraction. To this, one should immediately apply antidotes, cutting the clinging to appearances into pieces and understanding them as illusory. If you want to cut off the errors of Karma Vajra (ལས་ཀྱི་རྡོ་རྗེ།), it is said to 'strike the pig's snout with a hammer'. Furthermore, Vajrapani (ཕྱག་ན་རྡོ་རྗེ།) asked: 'Do secret mantra practitioners (གསང་སྔགས་པ།) take afflictions (ཉོན་མོངས།) as the path?' The master of secrets replied: 'Taking afflictions as the path is very important; only peacocks can use poison as food. A person who can take afflictions as the path without abandoning them is rarer than the flower of the Udumbara (ཨུ་དུམ་ཝ་ར།). For individuals with sharp faculties, afflictions arise as friends, but for lesser individuals, they become poison, so abandoning them is profound.' When afflictions are initially abandoned, everything is transformed into space (ཀློང་དུ།), and all afflictions and desirable qualities appear as illusions, without giving rise to any attachment. Even if they arise, there is no need to suppress them; there is no harm. Even if they do not arise, there is no thought of striving; there is no hope. Only then is it the measure of having transformed them into the path. Until manifest clinging is reversed, taking afflictions as the path is like a bee being stuck to the essence of honey. Karma Vajra (ལས་ཀྱི་རྡོ་རྗེ།), Mati Bhadra (མ་ཏི་བྷ་དྲ།), and Shri (ཤྲཱི།), understand the way of severing the grounds and paths in this way. The third point concerns errors in conduct, which are twofold: errors of untimely conduct and general errors of conduct. First, errors of untimely conduct are: conduct like that of a bee, preceded by hearing, thinking, and meditating (ཐོས་བསམ་སྒོམ་གསུམ།), which is the conduct of a beginner, but if practiced during retreat, it is wrong. Conduct like that of a deer, which is the conduct of the time of practice, but if practiced during retreat, one's samadhi will be influenced by others, so it is wrong. Conduct like that of a mute person, which is the conduct of focusing on the essential points of practice, but if practiced during the time of the bee, it is wrong because the meaning of the words is not understood. Conduct like a bird entering its nest, which is conduct practiced when one's own experience has arisen, but if practiced in samadhi, it becomes an obstacle to samadhi, and it is wrong because there is no warmth. Conduct like that of a madman, which is conduct practiced at the time of relying on experience, but if practiced when a slight experience has arisen, one will not find the end of the meaning, so it is wrong. Conduct like that of a lion, which is conduct practiced when the view has become space, but if practiced during the time of practice, it is wrong. If it is not on that very basis, appearance... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
