Collected Teachings of Je Tsongkhapa JTs11: A Garland of Nectar, the Supreme Medicine of Questions and Answers A Garland of Nectar, the Supreme Medicine of Questions and Answers A Garland of Nectar, the Supreme Medicine of Questions and Answers Homage to the Lord of Secrets, Vajrapani (a major Bodhisattva in Buddhism, symbolizing the power of the Buddha). You are the essence of the hearts of all Buddhas of the three times. You are the great Vajradhara (considered the primordial Buddha in Vajrayana) blessed by Buddhas as numerous as the sands of the Ganges. You have the ears of an elephant, so please reveal the supreme vehicle. You are adorned with goodness, so please reveal the correct view that abandons all conflicting and confusing views. You are the complete conqueror, so please reveal a Dharma that cuts through the net of doubt regarding view, meditation, and conduct. You are the source of jewels, so please reveal a Dharma that generates in the mindstream an inconceivable samadhi (meditative absorption) that unites shamatha (calm abiding) and vipashyana (insight). You are the cloud of truth, so please reveal the instructions for raining down a great rain of Dharma that extinguishes the fire of disturbing emotions and conceptualizations. You have blazing flames, so please reveal a profound instruction for burning the firewood of clinging to entities and signs. You are beautiful in form, so please reveal an instruction that generates inexhaustible bliss, an instruction that fills the eyes with tears upon seeing it. You are the wish-fulfilling jewel, so please reveal a Dharma that is clear, concise, and vast in meaning, that allows individuals with sharp faculties to resolve doubts and realize the meaning, and that allows even foolish cowherds to grasp the words and realize the meaning, a Dharma that quickly realizes the Dharmakaya (body of truth) of the Buddhas. Mati Bhadra Shri requested, and I, Karma Vajra, supplicated, so please reveal a unique instruction for these purposes. After this request, I received a unique nectar that descended from the crown of my head, coiled on my tongue, and was swallowed. This seems to be the compassion of you, my Guru. This indestructible sound, which does not show its form, spoke: 'Karma Vajra, convey these secret words of mine to Mati Bhadra Shri: the intention of Father Samantabhadra (representing the Dharmakaya Buddha), the heart-speech of Mother Samantabhadri (representing the wisdom of the Dharmakaya Buddha), my secret words of Vajradhara, the pinnacle of the vehicle, the practice of the supreme medicine, is to realize the root of the mind's luminosity.' I, Karma Vajra, asked: 'What is the nature of luminosity?' Karma Vajra, luminosity... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

He said that its essence encompasses the three: essence, nature, and compassion. Karma Dorje asked, 'When meditating on clear light, are there any pitfalls?' He replied, 'Your question is excellent. If a person does not understand, there are pitfalls. There are four of them: the way of falling into error, the signs of error, the faults, and the results of error. The way of falling into error regarding essence is: generally, essence refers to the state of one's own awareness, which is primordially empty and clear, without any fabrication. How is this present awareness, free from artifice and adulteration, supposed to be? If one does not rest in that state, but instead meditates on emptiness while still clinging to the notion of emptiness, then one has fallen into the trap of fixating on emptiness.' He said, 'That is falling into the trap of fixating on emptiness.' The sign of error is that one might say there is no Buddha above and no hell below, that everything is empty and nothing exists. The fault of error is that with the thought that everything is empty, one abandons all virtuous practices such as devotion, pure perception, taking refuge, generating bodhicitta, and loving-kindness, and engages in worldly activities. One indulges in non-virtuous deeds. By practicing falsehood in this way, one has no place to go but the Vajra Hell. The result of practicing falsehood in this way is that, in terms of virtue, one's false understanding leads to being born into the nihilistic views of the extremists. In terms of cause and effect, one's false understanding leads to wandering in the ocean of suffering. Karma Dorje, there are many who claim to have realized emptiness, but few who have realized the ultimate state of reality. Karma Dorje, there are four ways to err regarding nature. First, the error regarding nature is that this clear light of the empty essence of awareness manifests as form (藏文:སྐུ་,梵文天城体:रूप,梵文罗马拟音:rūpa,汉语字面意思:色身) and wisdom. However, form has no face or hands, and wisdom has no color or characteristics. It is merely the clear aspect of the empty essence, abiding in the indivisibility of clarity and emptiness. If one does not understand the union of clarity and emptiness, the union of two truths, then awareness falls into the trap of appearance.' He said, 'That is awareness falling into the trap of appearance.' The sign of error is that all Dharma terms become fragmented. If the Dharma of union is taught, it does not fit into their minds. The fault of error is that with the thought that everything is substantial appearance, one's mind does not engage in the Dharma of the mind and Dharma. One becomes overly attached to one's own philosophical system, and one is separated from the path of omniscience. Because one clings to appearance, there is no liberation. The result of error is that by clinging to the clear light of external appearance, one is born in the realm of form. Because one does not understand the clear emptiness of inner awareness, one's mind revolves in one direction, and there is no time for liberation. Karma Dorje, yes. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
