For the sake of practice, the young wise one goes to the solitary forest. Like a flock of swans seeing a lotus lake, my mind is deeply moved towards that solitary place. To extract the essence from this leisure body, the young wise one goes to the solitary forest. Like a young bee seeing a garden of hundred petals, my mind is attached to the taste of solitude. To taste the nectar of Samadhi, the young wise one goes to the solitary forest. Like the cool Malayan wind in spring, the medicinal greenery of the forest falls upon my mind. To destroy the army of the demon of afflictions, the young wise one goes to the solitary forest. The above is a discourse on the joy of solitude. Therefore, it is excellent that you are determined to engage in virtuous practice. Having fathomed the depths of learning, abandoning this life, and making practice the core, there is no offering more pleasing to the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. In this regard, present-day teachings and discussions appear to be for the benefit of others, but they are not. Those who seek gain and honor, using empowerments, scriptural transmissions, and so on to gather followers, actions that appear to be for the benefit of others, do not see the true value. Therefore, I thought that teaching and discussion would benefit the continuation of the Dharma, so I once suggested that you also dabble in teaching and discussion. Now, apart from abandoning this life and seeking liberation, do not rely on others. Do not stay in one place for too long, and do not strive to build monasteries or other such projects. Fulfill your vow to spend the rest of your life in the mountains. If you are in good health, arrange a meeting between teacher and student within three years. Before that, if you are sure you can meet, write a letter to Sakya about my situation here. Explain my reasons to the two Geshés (dge bshes, spiritual friends). May auspiciousness prevail from the great seat of glorious Sakya on the first day of the fourth month! Auspicious! Advice to the nephew Sonam Gyaltsen (bsod nams rgyal mtshan, Merit Banner): Homage to Lokeshvara (lo ke shwa ra ya, World Lord). Wisdom is like a lotus with a hundred petals, adorned with the stamen of compassion, holding the essence of the sacred Dharma, and emitting the fragrance of activity. You are the source of nourishment for those endowed with good fortune, I pay homage to you—Shakyamuni Buddha (thub dbang, the Able One), the sun-like friend. You are like a wish-fulfilling jewel made of merit and virtue, towering like a banner, like a king of power. Your wisdom is like a mandala, radiating the light of reason, I greet you—the one who emits the nectar of eloquent speech. The waves of birth churn, the tides of old age and death surge, this is the realm of existence filled with various evils and lurking dangers. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In this fathomless ocean of samsara, may you develop renunciation for yourself and all other beings. Suffering flows like a river, desire is like a salt barren, and the great abyss of the lower realms is difficult to cross. How can sentient beings not feel aversion to this? In the past, we have filled mountains with bones and crossed oceans of blood and tears countless times, yet we still have to go through even more. Why not be content with this life? We are immersed in the ocean of karma, long tainted by the saliva of afflictions. Although we have been caught by the fisherman of death many times, are we still not weary of the waves of rebirth? Since beginningless time, we have been mothers many times, and these kind beings have raised us with love. Knowing their unbearable suffering, may we moisten our minds with unfeigned compassion. The stream of breast milk flowing from loving-kindness is even greater than the ocean, yet we have drunk it all. Our mothers are overwhelmed by the waves of suffering. If we have no compassion, what could be more shameful? Beings have looked at us again and again with loving eyes, called us again and again with sweet names, and shed many tears of sorrow. We should remember this suffering in our hearts. Even after hearing and remembering the unbearable suffering of our loving mothers from beginningless time, if there is not even a little change in our love, then that person's heart is like a vajra. In the ultimate sense, view the nature of reality as emptiness, free from conceptual elaboration, like the sky. In the relative sense, view dependent origination as the nature of illusion. Analyze these properly with valid reasoning, and cultivate a view that is free from exaggeration and denigration. In the ultimate nature of emptiness, free from conceptual elaboration, there is no cause for fear even after repeated examination. Rather, the hairs of joy repeatedly stand on end. However, there is no opportunity to constantly contemplate it. In the relative nature of dependent origination and illusion, knowing that the results of good and bad actions are unfailing, may we generate unfeigned compassion for beings. In this way, we will abandon the view of nihilism. Those who have not tasted the supreme flavor of the nectar of vast learning and are without the eye of valid reasoning are ignorant of the distinction between the two truths. Even if they strive for hundreds of eons, they will not find an opportunity for liberation. The treatises accepted by the noble and wise ones are the single path traversed by the buddhas of the three times. These three dharmas are the mainstays of the Mahayana path. Fortunate ones, may you practice this method. From now until the attainment of the essence of enlightenment, may the power of our conduct and aspirations never wane. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
