May I swiftly attain the state of omniscience! This is an explanation of a fragment from the condensed Sutra of the Noble Thorough Severance. Urged by the command of the glorious lama Kunga Tashi Gyaltsen Palsangpo (Kun dga' bkra shis rgyal mtshan dpal bzang po) (All-Joyous Auspicious Banner), the master of the precious doctrine, it was composed by the monastic scholar Geshé Shönnu Lodrö (gZhon nu blo gros) at the principal temple of glorious Sakya. May there be virtue and goodness! Explaining Clearly the Meaning of the Tathagatagarbha Spoken in Numerous Sutras, the Intent of the Uttaratantra Explaining Clearly the Meaning of the Tathagatagarbha Spoken in Numerous Sutras, the Intent of the Uttaratantra I prostrate with a completely pure mind to all the Victorious Ones of the ten directions, together with their offspring! I will clearly explain the meaning of the exceedingly profound Tathagatagarbha. Listen, you who are impartial and possess knowledge! Regarding whether sentient beings possess the qualities of the Buddha's powers, etc., it is not appropriate to assert that the scripture, such as 'Those who have thoroughly realized the four extremes of all beings,' etc., has demonstrated this. This is because that scripture only indicates that sentient beings possess the general characteristic of the nature of the Buddha, which is merely the self-luminous essence, and that it is only seen from the first bhumi. 'Because there is no differentiation in the Dharma-nature' does not demonstrate it either, because it also only refers to the fact that the Dharma-nature of the qualities of the Buddha's powers, etc., is present even in the state of ordinary beings as merely the self-luminous essence. As it is also said in its commentary: 'Therefore, the qualities of the stainless Buddha are present even in the state of ordinary beings who are completely afflicted, as the Dharma-nature without differentiation, without any difference between before and after.' Therefore, it is said that this state is inconceivable. Similarly, 'In places where there are no Tathagatas, with the Buddha's eye, he sees his own nature,' and 'Afflictions are like wombs, sentient beings have qualities,' and 'The Buddhas see all sentient beings as treasures of stainless qualities without difference,' and 'Shariputra, the realm of sentient beings is not other than the Dharmakaya, and the Dharmakaya is not other than the realm of sentient beings. These two are not different, only the letters are different,' etc., also indicate that sentient beings possess the general characteristic of the Dharmakaya of the Buddha, which is merely the self-luminous essence, but do not show that they possess their own characteristic qualities such as powers. In short, in the uncontaminated realm of reality, there are actually four distinctions, such as the Dharmakaya. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

‘Suchness’ etc., and ‘the supreme Dharma is not empty’, and ‘because it possesses the inherent nature of qualities’ etc., are to show the state of utmost purity. Therefore, it is not appropriate to consider the Dharmakaya (法身,dharmakāya,法身,the body of the Dharma) of sentient beings as an object of cognition with characteristics and qualities. Similarly, the meaning of the Tathagatagarbha (如来藏,tathāgatagarbha,如来藏,the womb of the Tathagata) being described as permanent, stable, and unconditioned does not refer to permanence in the sense of an essence that never changes, nor to unconditionedness in the sense of not being compounded by causes and conditions. Rather, it refers to the very nature of the mind, which is clear light. In the state of impurity, although there are the three defilements of afflictions, actions, and birth, its essence does not change. In the states of purity and impurity, like the dirt on the eyelids, and the mind-made body produced by uncontaminated actions, and the inconceivable death and birth, etc., its essence does not change. Therefore, the realm of sentient beings and the Tathagatagarbha are said to be permanent, stable, and unconditioned. In the state of utmost purity, the very nature of the mind, which is clear light, performs the activities of benefiting sentient beings until samsara (轮回,saṃsāra,轮回,cyclic existence) is emptied. Therefore, it possesses inexhaustible qualities and is equal to the limit of the future. Thus, it is considered that this Dharmakaya (法身,dharmakāya,法身,the body of the Dharma) is permanent, stable, and unconditioned, not created by actions and afflictions. In all states, the very nature of the mind does not have the characteristic of newly acquired birth, nor the characteristic of cessation of the senses, nor the characteristic of abiding where the continuity of the same kind is uninterrupted from birth to death, nor the characteristic of aging, which is the transformation into another state. Therefore, it is called unconditioned because it is free from the four characteristics of conditioned phenomena. In all states, there is no change in the essence of the self-nature of clear light. Therefore, it is called permanent. Therefore, the meaning of permanence, stability, etc., is that in order to dispel some sentient beings' wrong views about the self-nature of the mind, clear light, the words permanence, stability, etc., are used in different ways. If one thinks that there is a truly existent phenomenon apart from the mind and considers this phenomenon to be the Tathagatagarbha (如来藏,tathāgatagarbha,如来藏,the womb of the Tathagata), and then explains it as permanent, stable, etc., then it does not conform to either the Madhyamaka (中观,Madhyamaka,中观,the Middle Way) or the Chittamatra (唯识,Cittamatra,唯识,Mind-Only) view, and it contradicts the sutras (经部,sūtra,经部,discourses) that teach the Tathagatagarbha (如来藏,tathāgatagarbha,如来藏,the womb of the Tathagata), as well as the commentaries on these sutras (经部,sūtra,经部,discourses), such as the *Praise of the Dharmadhatu (法界赞,Dharmadhatu Stotra,法界赞,Praise of the Realm of Dharma)* and the *Uttaratantra (宝性论,Uttaratantra,宝性论,the Sublime Continuum)*. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
