Question: 'Is this the essence of Dharma?' Thus it is said. Therefore, if someone says that one can hear Dharani even without the appearance of the Buddha, it is tantamount to saying that understanding profound meanings does not depend on the Buddha. In this way, the Buddha and his teachings become essentially the same as those worldly deities like Ishvara (自在天), who claim to be omniscient. If so, it would be a slander against the teachings and the teacher. Because, if someone says that the virtues such as extensive learning acquired by a Dharma speaker through the power of obtaining Dharanis of words and so on are not completely pure; that the Dharma speaker's actions of body, speech, and mind are flawed; that the Dharma speaker's practice of the three trainings (戒定慧) is not perfect; that the Dharma speaker is not cautious, and speaks carelessly due to negligence; that their behavior is not in accordance with the rules, and they are criticized for improper conduct; that their livelihood, rituals, and precepts are deficient, and they are criticized for deficiencies in conduct and discipline; that the Dharma speaker, when speaking, lacks confidence and cannot make others understand the words and meanings; that they cannot clearly explain the words and do not explain the meanings well; that they explain without understanding the meaning of the words, leading to contradictions; that they cling to the literal meaning, and use the superficial meaning of the words to explain the teachings of the Tathagata; therefore, causing contradictions between sutras and between verses, this is abandoning the Dharma. All these reasons will be explained below through 'Manjushri, how much confidence does a Shravaka (声闻) have,' and so on. The meaning is: all the confidence of Dharma speakers allowed by the Buddha arises from the power of the Buddha's blessings, so there will be no above-mentioned faults. To think that they have these faults is to think that the Tathagata has these faults. Furthermore, some Dharma speakers, when speaking, sometimes agree and sometimes disagree with the content of their own teachings; when teaching the Dharma, they do not respect the Dharma speaker, but talk about other things such as kings and ministers; they confuse words and meanings, do not distinguish between confusion, and say irrelevant things; they themselves also have doubts about this; they do not wholeheartedly trust the Dharma speaker, and always speak with reservations; and even tell their students, 'This can be studied, that cannot be studied.' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Furthermore, if someone says 'this race is inferior,' that is abandoning the Dharma. Because it does not distinguish between good and bad of the Dharma, thus despising it. Also, some people flatter Brahmins and householders, saying that if they speak a single verse from the Tathagata's teachings, you say, 'You have spoken the Tathagata's teachings well, and understood the meaning well.' Your agreement and praise for their one verse will lead to abandoning the Dharma. Why? Because it is for the sake of gain and respect, and to protect the household from which gain is obtained, not to protect the Dharma. What is the cause? It is due to attachment and clinging to castes such as Brahmins and powers such as kings. Why does saying that lead to abandoning the Dharma? Because the Tathagata's Dharma is profound and subtle, difficult to fathom, and only the wise can comprehend it, how can Brahmins and householders who have not been well-trained comprehend it? Therefore, saying that they also understand and speak the Tathagata's teachings well is like saying that the Tathagata's Dharma can also be understood by the foolish, thus slandering the profound and unfathomable Dharma. What will be the result of such actions of abandoning the Dharma? It will lead to falling into the great evil realms, etc. Therefore, the methods mentioned above are a good explanation of this passage of scripture. Just as with the light of a lamp and a jewel, those with sight can perceive various beautiful forms. Similarly, relying on the sun of the Buddha's teachings, the wise strive to understand the truth. If there were no movement of the sun and moon in the sky, the earth would be plunged into darkness. Without the orb of the sun of the Buddha's teachings, beings would also fall into a similar state. Therefore, those who wish for their own well-being and also cherish others should cherish and respect the Buddha's teachings and those who uphold them. Just as a rabbit swimming cannot fathom the edge of the ocean, ordinary people cannot measure the Buddha's teachings. However, relying on faith, scripture, and reason, I have completed this work, let the wise judge. May this merit cause all beings to abandon the extremes of existence and peace, and attain non-abiding Nirvana. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
