Even in flames, one should not be greatly afraid. The fire-serpent, enemies, and the vajra fire destroy life, 2-1084 Therefore, one should not fall into the extremely terrifying Avīci hell. If someone repeatedly associates with evil friends, harbors ill will towards the Buddha, Commits the acts of killing parents, arhats, And disrupting the Sangha. If one truly contemplates the nature of reality, one will quickly be liberated from it. If the mind hates the Dharma, how can there be liberation? As it is said in the scriptures. Now, to explain the meaning of the branch: 'The great precipice of abandoning the Dharma' refers to the ripening of the fruits of that karma, the evil realms such as Avīci hell, which are thousands of yojanas deep and surrounded by dense rocky mountains on all four sides, like a great precipice. Once fallen, it is difficult to escape, and it is a place full of suffering and unpleasantness, which is in accordance with the Dharma, hence it is called a 'precipice'. The cause of this result, the act of abandoning the Dharma, is also referred to by the name of the result, hence it is called 'precipice'. To show the disciples the nature of the act of abandoning the Dharma, which should be abandoned, and what its nature is, there is the question: 'Then' etc. The answer of the Bhagavan is: 'Mañjuśrī' etc. 2-1085 Among them, some consider some teachings to be good, and some consider some teachings to be bad, thus abandoning the Dharma. This is not right, because there is no good or bad in the teachings of the Tathāgata. Everything leads to Suchness, and everything tends towards Suchness, and there is not one that is not a means of entering the nectar of Suchness. As it is said in the Catuhśataka: 'Existence and non-existence, and neither existence nor non-existence, have all been taught. Because of the disease, everything becomes medicine, does it not?' Are there not distinctions between definitive and provisional meanings in the Dharma? How can it be said that there is no good or bad? Although there are differences between definitive and provisional meanings, this alone does not make them good or bad. Rather, it is taught in accordance with the inclinations of the disciples. For the meaning of reality, such as emptiness, signlessness, etc., for some disciples, it is explained in euphemistic language with different names; while for others, it is explained in the same language as it is. This is merely the establishment of the distinction between definitive and provisional meanings, but their intention is the same. Otherwise, it would contradict the intention of the Tathāgata's teachings, and then all speakers would not be omniscient. 2-1086 If someone abandons the Dharma, or because of abandoning the Dharma, slanders the Tathāgata, --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If someone says, 'This is slander,' it is because he considers the Dharma being taught to be evil and abandons it. If he thinks that the teacher has not realized the truth as it is and teaches it in a distorted way, then he is actually slandering. Otherwise, he is not respecting the Dharma. He is also speaking ill of the Sangha (community of noble ones), because the Sangha is distinguished by following the sacred Dharma taught by the Buddha. If he considers the Dharma to be evil, then he cannot respect those who uphold it as a standard and follow it. This Sutra is superior because it is logical and explains the ultimate truth. This Sutra is inferior because it explains the conventional truth that cannot be examined by reason.' If someone says this, then he is abandoning the Dharma because he considers the Dharma that explains conventional truth to be evil. If someone considers the Dharma that explains conventional truth to be more evil than the Dharma that explains ultimate truth, then how does this become abandoning the Dharma? If someone considers ultimate truth to be supreme and wants to realize it, then he should not consider conventional truth to be evil and should abandon it. Just as someone who wants water should protect the container, one should be very respectful of the establishment of conventional truth, because it is the method for realizing ultimate truth. As it is said in the Root Verses on the Middle Way: 'Without relying on conventions, the ultimate is not realized; without realizing the ultimate, Nirvana is not attained.' Therefore, the Tathagatas teach the Dharma through the gateway of the two truths. As it is said therein: 'The Buddhas teach the Dharma, relying on the two truths: the conventional truth of the world, and the truth of the ultimate meaning.' Therefore, it is not appropriate to disparage the Sutras that explain conventional truth. This is said for the sake of Bodhisattvas who have deep and vast interest and sharp faculties, therefore it is supreme. This is said for the sake of Hearers who have entered to pacify and tame themselves alone and have dull faculties, therefore it is inferior. This is said for the sake of Solitary Buddhas who have middling faculties, therefore it is middling.' If someone says this, then he is abandoning the Dharma because he is disparaging the Sutras of the Lesser Vehicle. If the Vehicle of Hearers and Solitary Realizers is the Lesser Vehicle... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
