Are they not inferior to those of the Lesser Vehicle? If considering them inferior is abandoning the Dharma, why is that? Although the vehicles of the Hearers (Nyanthos) and Solitary Realizers (Rang Sangye) are not the path to be realized by those with profound and vast faith and naturally sharp faculties, they are to be understood as auxiliary parts for those who follow. Because Bodhisattvas must know all the paths of the Three Vehicles in the causal stage and must realize all the qualities of the Three Vehicles in the resultant stage. As it is said in the Bhagavati Sutra: 'Subhuti, one must know all the paths, what is the path of the Hearers, what is the path of the Solitary Realizers, and what is the path of the Buddhas.' For those who are inclined towards the Lesser Vehicle, belonging to the Hearer and Solitary Realizer lineages, the vehicle of the Hearers and Solitary Realizers is like a staircase to enter the Great Vehicle. Because if they do not initially tame their minds through the path of the Hearers and Solitary Realizers, they cannot become vessels capable of holding the profound and vast Dharma of the Great Vehicle. Ultimately, they must also attain Buddhahood through this single vehicle. Therefore, the two Nirvanas of the Lesser Vehicle are like a city manifested to give rest to travelers exhausted by a long journey, a skillful means to enter the Great Vehicle, as the Bhagavan said in the Sutras. The venerable Chandrakirti also said in the Entering the Middle Way: 'Because beings have defilements that cause faults, they cannot enter the profound realm of the Buddhas. Sugata, because you possess wisdom, compassion, and skillful means, and because you have promised to liberate beings. Therefore, like a city manifested to alleviate the fatigue of the wise who are traveling to the island of jewels, you have taught this vehicle to those whose minds are focused on peace, and you have separately taught it to those who are secluded and trained.' Therefore, the Sutras of the Lesser Vehicle are useful for both those who need to be tamed by the Lesser Vehicle and those who are inclined towards the Supreme Vehicle, so it is not appropriate to despise them because they are Lesser. Among the six perfections, the Perfection of Wisdom is the training of the Bodhisattva, as are the five perfections such as generosity. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If someone says, 'These discourses with elaborations are not the bodhisattva's training,' that is abandoning the Dharma because they despise the aspect of skillful means. If someone asks, 'Aren't generosity and so forth inferior to wisdom? How is it that considering them inferior is abandoning the Dharma?' The answer is: with only wisdom devoid of skillful means, or only skillful means devoid of wisdom, bodhisattvas cannot attain the non-abiding nirvana, the goal they aspire to. Because they will fall into either the extreme of samsara or nirvana. Therefore, those who wish to attain the non-abiding nirvana must train in the path that combines skillful means and wisdom, and should not despise generosity and so forth. Alternatively, if someone says, 'Among the three vehicles, the Great Vehicle is the bodhisattva's training, the Hearer and Solitary Realizer vehicles are not the bodhisattva's training,' that is abandoning the Dharma. As it is said, 'There is nothing that the princes do not learn.' Therefore, all the paths of the three vehicles are to be learned by bodhisattvas, some to be understood, and some to be realized. If someone says, 'The confidence of the Dharma speaker allowed by the Buddha is only this much, or only this little,' measuring the confidence of the Dharma speaker is disrespecting the Dharma speaker, which is abandoning the Dharma. Because the Dharma speakers allowed by the Buddha have immeasurable confidence through the power of the Buddha. If a Dharma speaker falsely claims that the Dharma is not the Dharma, that is slandering the correct Dharma speaker, which is abandoning the Dharma. If someone says, 'Even without the appearance of a Buddha, one can hear and obtain dharanis such as forbearance,' that is abandoning the Dharma. Because the chief of dharanis, the dharani of forbearance, is the samadhi and wisdom that does not fear the profound meaning of non-arising. And that cannot be obtained without the appearance of a Buddha, because the profound meaning of non-arising, which abandons the extremes of permanence and annihilation, is the unique teaching of the Buddha. As it is said in the Ratnavali (Precious Garland): 'If one asks those who assert that a person is an aggregate, the Samkhyas, the Ulukas, and the Ajivikas, about assertions of existence, non-existence, and transcendence. Therefore, the teaching of the Buddhas is called the profound deathless, existence, non-existence, and transcendence.' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
