If one has a reversed attachment to happiness and permanence, etc., then there is rebirth. If the Hearers and Solitary Realizers, by meditating on the aggregates as impermanent, etc., abandon the karma and afflictions that are the cause of grasping at self, will they be liberated? By realizing the aggregates as impermanent, etc., one cannot uproot the latent tendencies of afflictions such as grasping at self, because both are equally wrong views that are reversed about the nature of the aggregates. For example, although attachment and anger have opposite ways of grasping, they are not mutually uprooting. Likewise, the nature of the aggregates is not established as how attachment and hatred, etc., grasp it, nor is it established as the nature of permanence, happiness, purity, and self, etc. It is also not established as the nature of impermanence, etc., because it is empty of inherent existence. Furthermore, grasping the aggregates as impermanent, etc., is not understanding the nature of the aggregates. Not understanding the nature does not destroy obscurations. As it says in the *Entering the Middle Way*: 'Because in this, only knowing thatness eliminates all stains; there is no other way to take hold of.' If, conventionally, the aggregates abide as impermanent and suffering, etc., therefore realizing them as such is not reversed, and grasping at permanence, etc., is reversed, so it is suitable as an antidote, is that reasonable? If the Hearers and Solitary Realizers merely realize that these aggregates are impermanent only conventionally, then they must realize that the aggregates of form, etc., are without inherent existence ultimately, otherwise, their realization of them as conventional is contradictory. If one realizes that these aggregates are impermanent things, then just as the aggregates do not abide as permanent, etc., conventionally, they also do not abide as impermanent, etc., ultimately, so the fault of not being suitable as an antidote remains. Then, what about the fact that in the sutras it says: 'Bhikkhus, is form permanent or impermanent? Venerable sir, it is impermanent. That which is impermanent, is it happiness or suffering? Venerable sir, it is suffering. That which is impermanent, suffering, and subject to change, is it suitable to regard as 'This is mine, this is what I own, this is my self'? Venerable sir, it is not suitable.' From this it is explained that the five excellent ones generated noble wisdom? These and other sutras that teach the aspects of arising and ceasing are for guiding those trainees whose minds are not yet mature. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Recognizing that phenomena such as aggregates (skandhas) have the nature of arising and ceasing, thereby abandoning attachment to the distorted appearances of permanence, etc., and merely engaging in activities that ripen the continuum. 1-813 The *Sixty Stanzas on Reasoning* states: 'Arising and ceasing are taught for the sake of a purpose. Knowing arising, one knows ceasing. Knowing ceasing, one knows impermanence. Knowing how to engage with impermanence, one will also realize the nature of phenomena.' This is what is being said. Those who have fully ripened the habit of familiarizing themselves with emptiness in the past can realize the meaning of no self-nature even from teachings that explain the aspects of arising and ceasing. Arising and ceasing are only suitable for dependent origination, which is without self-nature, because it is unreasonable for self-nature to change into something else; therefore, it is not for something with self-nature. As stated in the *Root Verses on the Middle Way*: 'For whom emptiness is possible, for him everything is possible. For whom emptiness is not possible, for him nothing is possible.' And: 'That which arises from conditions is unarisen. It does not have the nature of arising. That which depends on conditions is said to be empty. He who knows emptiness is diligent.' This is what is being said. If the Hearers (Śrāvakas) and Solitary Realizers (Pratyekabuddhas) focus on the collections of the Lesser Vehicle (Hīnayāna) for listening and contemplation, and even within that, the selflessness of phenomena is not taught, then how can the Hearers and Solitary Realizers realize the selflessness of phenomena? 1-814 It is not so, because the meaning of selflessness is also taught in the collections of the Hearers. How is it taught? In some texts, it is said that from ignorance arises action, and so on, and 'Is form permanent or impermanent? Venerable one, it is impermanent.' and so on. By explicitly clarifying the conventional aspects of arising and ceasing, etc., the meaning of selflessness is implicitly taught. As stated in the *Root Verses on the Middle Way*: 'The Blessed One said that any phenomenon that is deceptive is false. All conditioned phenomena are deceptive, therefore they are false. The Blessed One spoke of these in order to fully proclaim emptiness.' In some texts, the meaning of selflessness is explicitly taught, as in: 'The Blessed One, knowing existence and non-existence, in the instruction to Kātyāyana, negated both existence and non-existence.' And: 'In the Great Vehicle, non-arising is taught. The exhaustion of others is emptiness. Knowing exhaustion and non-arising, because they are the same, therefore please be patient.' These are the collections of the Hearers through which the Hearers and Solitary Realizers realize the selflessness of phenomena. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
